Players Continue Summer Preparations for New Season
Players Continue Summer Preparations for New Season
Friday, 22nd Jun 2012 15:04

Town keeper Arran Lee-Barrett was back at Playford Road today for some early pre-season training with the start of the Blues’ preparations for 2012/13 proper now less than two weeks away. The Town players are due back at the club on July 5th.

Lee-Barrett, currently the Blues’ only professional keeper, was joined on a run by released defender Ibrahima Sonko, who we understand was recently in the US as he searches for a new club but also has options in the UK.

One-time Town academy trainee Lee-Barrett tweeted: “Bumped into a few people at the training ground today. Sonks joined me on my run, had a chat with [returning academy chief] Bryan Klug.”

The club has given the players fitness programmes for the summer with Jay Emmanuel-Thomas amongst those who have been periodically working on their fitness at Playford Road since the end of May.

Striker Michael Chopra is spending time at a health camp in California as part of his preparations for 2012/13, while we understand manager Paul Jewell is also currently in the States on a short break.

New full-back Elliott Hewitt is set to continue his rehabilitation from the hip surgery he underwent while with Macclesfield at Playford Road having recently been at Lilleshall.

We expect French midfielder Cheick Kourouma to have signed on the dotted line by the time the squad reassembles on July 5th having recently agreed terms, while Jason Scotland, who is currently in Trinidad, is similarly expected to put pen to paper on a new deal.

We have Simon Clegg messing around with the olympics carrying a torch, Jewell in America and Evans well he could be anywhere. No wonder we are seeing no action here. Need face it Evans only interested in selling olympic tickets

They are allowed to have a break Ipswich24...

Of course they are allowed to have a break. However, it is worrying that with only weeks to go before the start of the new season we still have not signed the new 'keeper and centre-back that we so desperately need.

PJ could of course be in the USA to speak with Brad Guzan who it is alleged is a goalkeeper target and who is reported to be back home in the sates at the moment

Get some pre season training in Arran, here you go here's your number 1 shirt!
Ok, kind of tounge in cheek, but I do wonder if we will see a new keeper or not. ALB on a good day is a fine keeper, then he makes a mistake it it gets to him. If he could only eradicate the errors I wouldn't have any problems if he was to be our first choice keeper.

Since Sonko has been released he has made a first team start, recommended Kourouma to us who we are signing, and now he is first back in training. Not bad! Seeing as we will soon be going into pre-season games with only one centre back available, are we sure we can't sign Sonko on a cheap deal?

Garv added 17:34 - Jun 22
Would you want to Mark? I'd honestly rather stick with what we've got in Delaney and Smith and pick up a cheap youngster/loanee later in the window.

To be honest any defender under 30 who isn't particularly injury prone would do!

Smith will be away with the NZ Olypmic squad though, so as things stand we only have one centre back for the pre-season games. I can actually see Sonko playing in those matches.

I would like to see us bring in a quality right sided centre back to play alongside Smith. Delaney could compete with Smith for a place. We will need one more in my opinion though, ideally someone on affordable wages who is willing to be a backup.

Oh I see, yeah that wouldn't particularly surprise me. Good point. Not sure how that work work though.

The season finished at the end of April. It's now mid to late June. Whether the Pro PJ posters like it or not, the reality is we have signed only one injured player so far. ALB is the only GK. With Smith away with the NZ Olympic squad we only have one available CB. It's simply not good enough - because PJ himself said he wanted players in before the players return! Whether people like it or not, PJ has yet again failed to deliver.

There is of course still time, but we need players soon so they can gel - not on the 17th August. There can be no excuses this year - particularly not the 'we need time to gel card'. After a season and a half in charge, our manager should be more than prepared for this season. Not the fans fault that many of his own signings are no longer at the club!

We can not rely on just two CB's this season - will need at least four at the club. There is still so much for PJ to do!

Unless PJ sorts something out soon, it could be yet another difficult season.

I can see it being a difficult start anyway,, even if we have extra players in...
Blackburn, Watford and Blackpool in August wow !!! the computer was not kind to us ???? if we could get 4 pts. in August it would be a great start ???

ipswich players come back on the 5 of july so i would have thought other teams are doing the same hence why we havn't seen much movement from anyone. players, managers, ceo's and agents take this time to get away from it all.
i bet most of you negative gits wont answer a call from work on your week off.

Its not even squeaky bum time, yet some posters have given up on the season already!

Fear ye not! Scott Loach will be our number one at the start of the season and we will have cover at CB in plenty.

Just enjoy the sunshine and relax. Oh sh*te, its p*ssing down again.

I think Sonko was there to mow the lawns or somthing. Look I like the fact ALB is an Ipswich boy and its a nice story that he allegedly walked into the training ground asking for a trial and all that but at the end of the day, he just isn't good enough to be considered a number 1 in my opinion, I just always feel when I'm watching him that a ricket is just around the corner.

I agree its quiet this time of year and we have to stay patient however what is becoming all too obvious trend is the poor state the club is being run and that is not a whinge, its fact!

All our high investment players over the last 4 years we have have not recouped a single penny, they just walked out for nothing, I dont care what anyone says on here thats just rank bad business. Thats EVERY single player apart from Jon Walters although if I'm wrong please correct me.

What is also worrying me is why are we NEVER signing our priority players?? Why are we being turned down for Crystal Palace and Brighton???!! These clubs dont have Premeriship parachute payments, they arnt bigger clubs so why on earth are payers deciding against signing for us?? Is it coincidence??? Somthing is wrong and in my opinion, looking from the outside as a fan, it's a fundamental lack of negotiating skills in either re signing existing or signing new players for a start.

Somthing else I didnt realise until yetserday but who the hell do the club think they are changing both strips annually?? Do they think their Man Utd or somthing?? What about families with kids?? If thats not ripping people off I dont know what isnt!!!

Right I've depressed myslf now by typing this highliy positive note! I know what will cheer me up, watching Germany whoop the Greeks...........DOH!!

Who says they are our priority players? Most of them are only rumoured to be interesting ITFC, and the rumours being put on this site by Phil.

PS you do not have to buy a shirt every season!

OOPs the Greeks have just equalised
