Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

I have been a fan since'68,remembering the BR years, the doldrums after he left, and the turn of the tide of the Royle and BURLEY times.I must admit ..have not been much lately.but was actually thinkin of wasting 26 quid and goin to the cardiff game....just to have a look at the new manager.I take it we'll have one by then .Also standing(sorry sitting) in the good old North.

Sorry Jewell, but it's time for you to go. Like so many others, you've failed to make this group of players achieve. What we need now is someone with real footballing knowlege, somebody like Redknapp. Not only would it lift all of the players and the fans, but without a doubt we would see many more players wanting to move here purely because of the manager. Also, i cant help but think that Evans would back Redknapp more financially too!

alfromcol, while what you say about bookies giving their odds based on people betting is true, they also give odds based on information received from various sources. which is why they're rarely wrong in situations such as this. i sincerely hope they are right on this occasion as it will mean we will be rid of the most incompetent manager we've ever had.his tactics yesterday were awful, just because he put murphy up front he abandoned playing football in preference to just humping the ball forward, thus why, unlike wed when we at least played some decent stuff at times and created chances(which we wasted)< we created very little. it also appears that some players no longer want to play for him which is a recipe for disaster. i have in the past, (even after weds match), sttood up for him, but i cannot any longer, imo if he is still here at the end of the season, we WILL be relegated.

Town's Chief Exec Simon Clegg shares his column from the matchday programme

It would be short sighted and naive to try and put a positive spin on the start to the season. While there have been some encouraging signs the table doesn't lie and three defeats and only one win from six games falls well short of our own hopes, aspirations and expectations.
That said we are only four weeks into the new season and it needs to be recognised that there are still 40 games to play. Indeed at this stage last season Reading were also in 23rd position with one less point than we currently have accrued, so while there is reason for some concern, we are far from ‘panic stations' at this time. Everyone who follows the game knows that football is a sport which is dependent on individual and collective confidence, a commodity which is hard to come by when you are not winning games.
At difficult times like these it is challenging for everyone but in particular the fan base to feel upbeat and positive. However, without your loyal and vocal support the problem is simply exasperated and the chances of turning attempts on goal into the back of the net are further diminished.
In high performance sport the margins between success and failure are small and these differences move players and teams from zero to hero and vice-versa very quickly.
I would ask all fans to be vocal in their support today; the boys certainly need your encouragement and without it the chances of success become harder.
We have to all got to take a degree of responsibility for getting us out of the current rut, the manager, the players, the staff, the owner, myself . We need to be in this together because we can all make the difference that will see us through.

One thing that is clear is that success cannot be achieved without investment and the ongoing support of the owner is critical to achieving that. No serious observer of Ipswich Town can question the commitment of Marcus Evans. He has put millions into the Club and it's worth remembering where Ipswich Town might be without that financial backing.

Today is an important game; we desperately need points - not so much for the points themselves at this stage but to give everyone the confidence that is so critical to kick-starting our season
Clegg out along with J

Hypertheticaly, and I want a new manager as much as anybody but the board could announce their support for Jewell,Ipswich get a new lease of life and dont lose a game for the rest of the season and go up as champions of coarse thats theoretical and most improbable but what if.......

I have been a critic of Marcus Evans but now think it is time for him to act start with Clegg and Jewell and his coaching staff and bring in a manager who can motivate these players.
He has put his faith in people who have given him some awful advice he should bring in Bryan Hamilton as CEO and Redknap as manager.
So come on Marcus give us what we want do the RIGHT thing !!!!

I will no doubt get some down arrows for this but quite a lot of disrespectful comments towards PJ on here and some of you should be ashamed. I have previously given people on here stick for negative, factless, childish and offensive comments against the management at ITFC, and i stand by those comments.
Whether you like it or not PJ was handed a huge task for the mess left by RK and his done his best to try and rectify it. At this moment in time he has failed in those efforts and i think it is now fair to say he has had enough time and a change may be the right move, BUT only if we bring in the right person. Be careful what you wish for !
PJ hasnt really addressed the defensive issues, but more worrying IMO is that the last two displays have probably been the worst since he took over and confidence appears to be non- existent. If we do have a change at the helm i hope some posters give the new boss more of a chance than some of you did with PJ .
He is a decent bloke who has just failed to turn our team around, and that is all, why some of you have to you him into a hate figure i dont and never will understand.

someone needs to make sure PJ, Clegg and ME gets a copy of all these posts so they know exactly how the vast majority of fans feel pj states he doesn't read TWTD or news papers etc perhaps he is lying he is pretty good at it when it suits Clegg says he didnt realise he was unpopular when told in an interview etc i am hoping he goes sooner than later before its to late to turn the tide.

Its not Jewell that needs to go, its CLEGG. Jewell has lined up some decent signings and he plays football the right way. But every time Cleggs fails (or refuses) to do the deal. What else it the guy supposed to do?

righty added 18:20 - Sep 23
You people who support Jewell should look at the league table, tactics team selection, substitutions Clegg has nothing to do with any of this so blame the right person.

bluesman. you are yet another person who seems to think that clegg has any say in doing deals with players. while he may be the guy who actually talks to the palyers/agents, iyt is on instructions and guidelines set to him by m.evans. the only person who decides how much/ how long a deal we can offer, as it his money thats being apent. clegg has no leeway on that so if a player asks. for more, clegg cant agree to that without m. evans agreement. in essence, clegg is just the mouthpiece for m. evans. righty, yore spot on. whatever other issues there may be at the club, the football side is entirely down to the manager, not the ceo or the owner.

Dbobblehat - for all of PJs failings he did inherit Keanes mess and I will never villify anyone personal for doing a job. You are right that he (and anyone else) should not be hated.

Think feelings are running high as the club, and no one is bigger than the club, is going downhill and it is clear for all to see that he is not right for ITFC.

What a load of rubbish you people talk the mans useless and should never have come to the club he has had 2 yrs to get it right nothing awful signings and loans he has no idea.
As for a nice bloke what the hell has that got to do with anything,I also dont think he was his treatment of some players was deplorable and I will be ashamed he ever managed this once great club.
I hate everything about the way he ran the club and hope he never manages again

bluey123 - i didnt call him nice i called him decent and not deserving of the personal hatred that you and others display. Feel free to state he has been a poor manager but comments like "i hope he never manages again" reveal your level of maturity (or lack of it).

bluey123 I suppose your the best person in the world that doesnt do anything wrong ever professionally.

I feel ashamed to call myself a town fan seeing some of the comments about pj.

I was at the game saturday/tuesday/all season/25 years and I agree its been awful, pathetic at times saturday and pj might well find himself out of a job by the end of this week.

But I for one take no satisfaction out of that if it happens as that means my club have again failed to progress.

I beleive pj to be a decent bloke that in the old days would have been given a few months however in these days of cut throat/instant result football caused by people like on this site calling for his head after pre season, he will be lucky to get a few more games.

As for Redknapp, I'm afraid theres more chance of me growing wings than us getting him, get real people!!

And even if we do get "mesiah" Redknapp (isnt that how King Keane was welcomed??), he doesnt have a magic wand and until the fundamentals at the club are sorted out he could well end up like all the other managers.

Agreed. His performance at Ipswich will ensure he will be back at Sky studios. No need for nastiness ough, he seems like. Nice bloke. However, his lingering around will sour people unless he is sacked tomorrow. He knows he is a gonner....just hanging on for a payoff for ineptness. That will make people increasingly angry. Down to you Marcus now....
