Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

Blueash78 as soon as you started making comparisons to politics, I knew your post would be "challenging". Butcher would be a disaster. End of subject.

marcus139, if your challenged by a simple analogy then get some rest. I'm just fed up with loads of unconstructive comments. You seem to think you have some definitive opinion that sweeps all before you aside.

Right here I go, Fans taking frustration out on players at game why if you've got a problem with jewel and Clegg stay after the game and vent your anger because if jewel goes the players are still going to be there.

I'm not one to encourage sacking managers. At the same time I agree it's time for a change. When the bookies close books move odds to 1/1 then there's usually a reason. Could just be betting patterns, of course.

Good shout that Sindre, more than stabalised Charlton in the Premier League and it all went wrong for them after he left. Think he would do a good job here.

Absolutely... Him, Redknapp, Davies are my most wanted ones. I would not like to have McCarthy,Megson or Cotterill.

I listen to the match commentaries on Radio Suffolk. The assessments made my ex Town players Alex Mathie and Mick Mills have been revealing. As people both passionate about Town and highly experienced ex players, they see actions and behaviour by the players on the pitch that perhaps some of us fans miss.

Bottom line from Mathie on the Middlesboro game once we were losing ? something like this: "There are no leaders. Heads are dropping".

Bottom line from Mick Mills after Town concede two quick goals against Charlton ? Same as Mathie. Then he said: "I would like to be down on the pitch. I would like to see who is talking among the Ipswich players. In my time, we had players who got angry at such setbacks and channelled that anger into a determined response. But I don't see that here. "

Later, he praised Luongo, Scotland and Drury for getting their heads up again and having a determined response. That left the other players damned with faint praise.

In other words, we have players who lack the confidence, determination, courage and commitment to get stuck in when the chips are down. When the going gets tough in Town matches, the players in the majority go AWOL. So: this is about the players themselves, not just the manager or the backroom hierarchy.

Redknapp, really? Do we want a manager who will spend more time in front of Sky Sports cameras commenting on everything from the England squad to the price of fish! We need a manager out to make a name for himself, not one that already has, someone who wants to suceed.
Someone like Karl Robinson.

I do feel sorry for PJ, as I think he's a "genuine" kind of bloke. But it does seem as if the whole set-up lacks fire in the belly, and, as the cliché goes, the buck stops with the manager. He could still turn it round, and then a lot of people will be left with egg on their faces, but it's beginning to look like a big "if". I don't think HR is the answer, but I could imagine ME might bring him in to the end of the season to keep us (hopefully) from going aground until a new (YOUNGER) manager is appointed. I'm looking forward to meeting the Budgies again next season, but we won't do that in Div. 1. So I hope someone has the answer... Watch this space.

Curbs and Holland? But definitely not Megson, Cotterill, Davies or McCarthy. Just yet more old school long ball trash merchants.

Someone tell me he has gone - I need a cure for my hangover!

By the way does anyone know for sure whether Matt Holland wants to manage a football club?

Curbs been out to long, would have been a time i would have wanted him, but sadly there are more questions than answers right now at portman road, to bring in a manager that brings in a whole new set of questions on account of his time out of the game , not the right choice imo. As for Holland, still too many questions as he has never done it. As i said earlier it wont be Redknapp, so who then? well no one out of work does it for me i'm afraid.

I had a dream i won the euro millions and in that dream i bought out evans and brought in my ideal replacements for Jewell and co, a former spurs legend and former fans favorite , Tarrico and Poyet. Well i cant tell you how it turned out, reality struck in as my bloody neighbours kids woke me up screaming at each other. Anyway thats my choice for itfc if i was choosing my ideal replacements.

I really feel now a change is needed, feel sorry for Jewell but it hasnt worked out, for whatever reason(s) . I am glad the club gave him this amount of time and would endorse the next manager given time also. Time for Evans now to really roll up his sleeves and get the right man in.

My dad was a huge town fan, his ashes now under portman road pitch, always remember him quoting a quote from the cobbolds, it went something like this. " if we sack a manager, we should sack ourselves as we took the decision to employ him". I know those days are long gone but Evans get a bloody grip and do whatever it takes to get the right man in. I know his money saved us from possible extinction but he is very accountable for who he employs, we as town fans deserve better than mere average survival in the second tier of english football.

Just want to finish by saying, i am sad how it has worked out, i am not a jewell hater and i believe he has worked really hard at getting this club back amongst the elite, probably to a certain extent with his hands tied. I would actually like to take the time to thank him for his efforts but would also urge him to do the honorable thing, i know i would as it clearly is not working and he is out of ideas......Yesterday was the final straw for so many, myself included......COYB

I have been an avid supporter of Paul Jewell but even I have had enough at this point. Frankly, he needs a miracle (3 straight wins in a row) right now to save his job. We have struggled with centre-backs for 2 years and its about time this situation was recified. Paul Taylor is a good player, but personally I think we have enough up-front (especially as we seem to constantly play 1 striker anyway). A significant investment in a centre-back was badly needed (REALISTICALLY WE NEED 2 MORE). God forbid if we get an injury to Luke or Tommy.
We have a good team, but players who come here seem to gradually get worse and worse. What is happening on the training pitch? JET, Cresswell, Drury etc came here as very good players. Every game they seem to get a little worse and worse.
Jewell must know that he is lucky to have someone like Evans overseeing things. Evans gave Keane far too much time and it looks like he is going to do the same for Jewell.
We are going to get relegated if we don't get significant change.
Frustrating thing is we are actually playing ok, but our defence is a joke. It looks shaky every time the opposition gets the ball. I think we've easily got the weakest defence in this league (and that includes Peterborough).

Can't see any possible way that Harry Redknapp could ever work with Clegg?
He is an old fashioned manager and I don't think with his experience in the game that he could take someone ruining all his potential signings or having any interference in what he would probably see as, his business.
I'm sure that our refusal to spend the going rate for the right players in recent dealings would also have been noted by Redknapp, but then, maybe we have not been overly keen on buying Paul Jewell chosen players for another reason, other than financial?

Get Harry!!!!! Hopefully there is no smoke without fire, I can see only worse if Jewell stays, even though if Harry comes he will have to use the same players plus loanees until Jan I am sure he will be able to motivate them far better than Jewell has ever done!!! This potential appointment would give our club such a huge lift and the ground would be full once more and I for one would be very impressed as he is one of the best English managers in the country - hope I am not hoping beyond hope - Come on!!!!!!
