Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

Rumours on twitter have jewell gone - to be announced in the morning. Just also read a Paul Ince link. Hadn't crossed my mind but mightn't be a bad shout.

Appleton would be a good bet. Well respected EPL coach who worked under Hodgson and di matteo. Dealing with the Pompey situation, Pompey fans love him which tells you a lot about his integrity given their predicament at the mo. only 36 and has, obviously, worked on the most severe shoestring budget whilst stil trying to play decent football.
I don't see how harry is a fit for us in the medium or long term given our supposed commitment to ffp, granted he'd probably get us safe this season but where would we go from there, redknapp wouldn't be looking at us as a project. He'd come in safe us this season take the plaudits and probably bugger off to leave someone else to take over next summer when the same old problems would resurface, we don't need a firefighter we need a long term strategist if that means short term pain then so be it.

Harry does not need money. He had nothing back in day. He is a motivator. This is a rare quality. He may enjoy challenge, with no doubt a big reward if he gets us up.

John - I'm with you. He's my choice. In addition to what we have both said in previous posts it says something wen the Pompey squad all wanted to stay despite not getting paid. That is with the exception of ward who missed his mum. I really feel the modern game has passed many coaches by and unless they have money to buy top top players they struggle. This is where a motivational young coach like MA who can also man manage players has the edge. Billy Davies is a gd shout too, but he has had rows at both derby and forest wen the board wnt cough up to kick on to the next level. I can't c a large Amount of money being available to the new man! Harry is proven but is it a long term strategy? I know he wd get us to safety but wd he be here long enough to build if a bigger job comes along.

this is far and away the biggest reponse to a story on TWTD, and rightly so, the club we all love is in pretty dire straights, we can point the finger at ME but he appears to have provided adequate funds for players (85 since he took over) and others aim their fury at Clegg, whilst he isn't a "football" man he looks after the business side of things for ME and has obviously played a part in aquiring the above mentioned 85 players, so the facts are that these players are clearly not up to the level we have come to expect at Town over the years and the blame for that lays squarely at the door of the manager/managers. each manager (apart from JM) has had funds and time enough to make some progress and they have failed to do so, this isn't ME or Cleggs fault (although they did employ the managers) we have to start again and get back to basics, as we did when Joe Royle took over, we need someone who will come in and steady the ship and start to move the club forward and build for the future(5 year plan) I know we all want success and want it now but I'm pretty sure most fans would be happy to see steady progress year on year with a team of young preferably home grown players(Hyam, Murray, Carson) mixed in with seasoned(not over the hill) pros (chambers, chopra) personally I would like to copy what Brighton have done as think they have improved year on year, have spent wisely on playing staff and have employed two knowledgable ex-pros whos philosiphy is to play football the right way, I would like to see Paulo Di Canio and perhaps an ex town player as his assistant

Interesting to see Steve Kean is on the verge of being sacked at Blackburn - 2nd in the league! yet we are 2nd from bottom and nothing coming out of PR... just maybe explain the differing ambitions of the two clubs, but then we fans don't know because Marcus Evans never comes out with any statement.... I understand his privacy but feel his silence does not help the club. Please explain ME why PJ is still manager or if you intend him to complete his contract how you are going to back him ie. sign the players he keeps highlighting he wants but do not sign because of personal terms are not good enough. The club needs stability and YOU as the owner are responsible for this to give faith in your manager and this is in turn passed onto the players. So Mr Evans please come out on Monday and tell us what your plans are?

Good comment martleshamitfc.
ME being silent is a big thing, and just increases the uncertainty around our club. If he was to say PJ is to stay because I believe he is the right man then it would ease the pressure on the players and the manager and would end my speculation and many others speculation about new managers ect. I myself have made a couple of comments on here that I hate making because I'm fed up of whats happening but I would rather have some clarity and if that means PJ is given backing so be it. I would rather that than endless speculation for the next month. At least that way PJ doesn't have to do things like change the formation three times in the first half and make rash decisions that dont benefit the team, Evans putting faith in him would at least renew a bit of understanding from fans. sack him or back him ME.

Assumption: in the absence of any official statement from the club, why not stop all this speculation and vitriol and understand that the manager has the confidence of the owner ?
As fans we are all depressed at the team's league position . There are valid criticisms of both the management and the players.
But what if they bring back 4 or 5 points from the next three games ? Playing decent football ? Crisis reprieved.
Bear in mind that these players are new to one another. PJ has switched strategy to youth. They need time to develop but there are signs that they are a good passing side. What they lack is confidence and courage when the going gets tough.
Improvement will come from hard work and genuine commitment. Just changing the manager is no panacea.

AndrewPC, The general feeling and hope is PJ is on his way out it seems, but before a club can announce this, they have to discuss alot of legal stuff, contract termination payoff etc, lots of red tape that to be honest I don't think would be done on a Sunday. If Jewell is indeed out, we will likely find out later this afternoon at the earliest.

Not true

Jewell wanted Austin, Boyd, and so on. but can only get ellington types in. 85 playes means nothing Clegg get the quality players nominate by managers to sign.

Dissboyitfc added 07:53 - Sep 24
What about Paul Taylor? he is not an Ellington type, is he? Personally though i would have liked to have seen that fee spent of a quality CB.....COYB

No he's more of a overpriced Lee Martin type, than a Bristol City Balldock sure fire investment

I am a little concerned. Harry was good for Portsmouth and Spurs, but not very good for Southampton. We shouldn't of got PJ in the first place. It should've been Chris Hughton.

I think everyone agrees with Sindre on this one. PJ had too big a mountain to climb after RK.

Urchin added 10:16 - Sep 24
Ok I admit it -- I was a believer in PJ but now he has to move on before things get worse. However as much as everyone likes Harry (although I actually prefer Louise) I can't him coming here. All reports when he was touted as England manager alluded to the fact that he and his wife really loved the south coast. Although its beautiful up here cannot see him wanting to upsticks at his age. I honestly think there no truth in this I think its because everyone knows he and ME are friends and therefore putting 2+2 and making 5

@CliveWoodlegpeg

I think you will find that Magilton had spent at least £6M (£2m Norris, £1.25 McCaley, £1m Civelli, that midfielder whos name ecapes me, who was supposed to be the Steven Gerrard of the Balkans, Vermice.. to name a few signings) before Keane came in..then Keane spent another £6M for starters..

Evans was handing out the money at one time..but then obviously got fed up..

Swift action has to be taken. I have backed Jewell in the past but he has to go, and go now. We need to terminate his contract.

If we can manage with two centre backs for three weeks then i am sure we can survive ten days and one fixture without the manager - the next appointment is critical. It has to be the right chap.

Evans - please wake up, smell the coffee and get shot of Jewell.

Then employ Billy Davies or Redknapp (if he comes - which i strongly doubt).

Southamptonblue added 13:14 - Sep 24
Have you people wanting Redknapp lost your minds?

He more or less destroyed Southampton when he was their manager and he was instrumental in making Pompey bankrupt.

Mind you, I hear that his dog is some sort of financial wizard...
