Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

Well said Thejam you are right what I have heard they rarely rain properly and certainly dont train at defending if they do my god says it all about coaches.
As for Edwards always liked the man good pro poor RB always gives his all but should be in his position.
The trouble with Jewell is plays too many players out of position he doesnt bring in players for the team just players.
I cannot see how Evans can allow this to continue because if he does we are going down.

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME, JEWELL HAS NOT GOT A CLUE, HE SHOULD DO THE DECENT THING AND WALK, (DONT LET THE DOOR KNOB HIT YA, WHERE THE GOOD LORD SPLIT YA) HERES A BIT OF A IDEA, GET A MANAGER IN WHO CAN GET CERTAIN PLAYERS TO GIVE A SH!T ABOUT THE CLUB THEY PLAY FOR AND WE SUPPORT. THE PLAYERS SHOULD SHARE OUR PRIDE FOR THE TOWN. HARRY OR CURBS TO START THE CLIMB.

Chris Hutchings' record of taking over sides that PJ has left was the main thing that had me worried about PJ's appointment in the first place. He would, I promise, be much worse. Looking at the table now that it has taken a bit of shape, can anyone see this side competing outside the bottom 6? Virtually everyone looks better than us, and so a new manager, if appointed, would need to be very special indeed to bring a significant change of fortune. We might want to be careful what we wish for. Curbs and McCarthy would offer little I'm sure. Davies potentially more, but seems to get the hump with any board that doesn't give him millions. It's tougher than y'all might think, and I don't believe that a change will necessary mean an improvement in the sense that most of the posters here are hoping for. Be nice if it were different, but this could be one long slog, whoever's in charge...

This club is heading one way at that is down. ME is losing fans by the week. I know many who have stopped going because of the high price to watch this S**T every week me for one. Say what you like about not being a loyal fan and the club does not need fans like me blah blah blah but at the end of the day why would people work Monday to Friday and then pay a stupid price to go watch that shower of S**T home or away. I had a season ticket for 5 seasons and went to about half the away games but now i would not even think about spending my hard earned money or time on this. REDKNAPP IN !!!!!!!!!!! even though i think this is complete b*****ks.

PJ can get us out of this division, I know it. We are heading to league 1. Absolute disgrace, resign & I'll retain a little respect for you.

PJ has been a dead man walking for weeks now such that even the players now believe it. As a consequence there is now absolutely nothing PJ can do to turn things round. He's lost the players and he won't get much from them now; like the rest of us they've already got an eye looking out for his replacement. PJ sounds like a beaten man now and seemingly is painfully aware that the end is coming. We can be certain now that a change is gonna come. For PJ's sake let's hope ME is merciful and puts him out of his misery quickly.

Is this the most posts for a TWTD story???

I think it is plain for all to see, the passion from the manager isn't there! The players don't seem to care and the fans are turning their backs.

Who knows if Redknapp is the answer but we need something to spark, what I still feel, is a good team on paper.

Whoever does come in I hope someone like matt holland or Jason de vos is a part of the coaching staff, players that gave their all and cared about this club.

Quick question: Did anyone actually think we would be beat Charlton?

I reckon 80%+ of fans didn't think we would beat a team like Charlton.

Says it all for the state we find ourselves in :-(

Next manager?? Megson? Please god no. Curbishley? out of the game too long. Davies? Im not totally convinced but wouldnt dismiss. Ince? No thanks. Redknapp? Yes pleaase but unlikely. Mccarthy? Yes knows how to get promoted from this division. Just my opinion on these guys. I just want to see players playing with pride for town & supporters having a bit of hope.

Bookmakers know no more that the rest of us. They simply set the odds to make sure they make a profit/do not lose too much money. The low odds are caused by putters betting on HR getting the job. Punters, like bookmakers, no no more than the rest of us (they are gambling).

I for one did not think we would beat Charlton and was proved right.Listened to Mick Mills on the way home and he loves this club and reading between the lines thinks Jewell is nowhere good enough he should do the right thing and go.
He will not go as he knows he is finished in football

Right again eh. Hope you had money on it?

I heard Mick Mills just like you and didn't have to read between the lines. I thought Mills made a bold pitch for the job. Can't say I have ever heard a football pundit on air, make such a blatant and public bid for a job.

PJ will go as soon as he has time to negotiate his exit terms with Evans. They may, hopefully, have done this at dinner after the match on Saturday. Announcement will come as soon as the legal people have tied it all up.
