Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

I was at the game today and jewell looked a defeated man when the second went in, he looked gutted... i think he knows as well as us that his time is up, thanks paul jewell but i think your time is up, which is sad to say as i have grown to like him, and can i just say what a fantastic game nathan ellington had today huge respect to him after being out of the picture for so long and i swear that goal came off him but anyway, if redknapp comes in then that would be a huge boost for the club and our reputation onwards and upwards boys, c'mon town.

I'm very much in Sindre's camp, it's only been the last couple of games where I now feel PJ has to go. I like him as a person, and I certainly believe he feels he is making the right decisions but its just not working out!
My concern is the replacement, Redknapp? Doubtful! Megson? Probably! And that scares me more than PJ!!

Look at the managers currently of work. Redknapp, McLeish, McCarthy, Cotterill, Davies, Phil Brown (please no) to name a few

If ME doesnt want to pay compensation to another club then it could well be one of the above. He will definitely not go for a lower league manager because it will not generate bigger enough headlines for the ME business

The job is Redknapps if he wants it otherwise I reckon McLeish or McCarthy!

Redknapp commuted from Poole to north London at Tottenham, but I doubt he'd travel this far. Besides, I expect he would want the sort of transfer budget that would be well beyond Ipswich (is it about £2M we spent this summer on transfer fees, less than just Leadbitter).

We looked slow and clueless today, so I agree it is time for a change, but shouldn't the Chief Executive be included in that change as well? That's what Norwich did, and haven't looked back.

To be honest I do think that PJ has been dealt a rough hand.

1/Firstly he had to deal with the threat of relegation as well as inheriting a poor team
2/ Growing negativity as well a apathy from fans - a left over from Keane and to a certain extent Jim.
3/ Having Simon Clegg as a CEO - he is not a football man at all.
4/ The advent of the FFP meaning that as a club we are committed to lowering wages and not giving in to higher wage demands.

BUT
He has made mistakes - the same old excuse that we need 'two or three more players' that 'everyone is looking at the same players' that 'we lack fight/concentration/an edge.

He brought in expensive aged players that didn't work out and the defensive situation is a joke.

I do think that history will be kind to PJ - a manager who saved us from relegation and steadied the sinking ship. But now a manager to change direction into calmer seas. In truth he needs to go.

But who to get? Is Harry really an option as he will see himself as a PL manager. The rumours seem to based on his friendship with ME. A good mate of mine works in B&Q. i won't work there even if he asked me kindly. I sort-of called comparison.

So who do i want? Casting aside Harry (who i doubt will come) no domestic managers really appeal to me. I would rather have Hope Powell a manager than Curbs. I want someone who has contacts in every country on gods earth. Someone who agents will be calling as soon as he has been given the job. Someone who can look at the squad in a blink of an eye and cast away who is rubbish and someone who knows a good bargain and knows the foreign market extremely well.....guess its Harry and a younger assistant. Someone like Taricco?

Over and out - sorry for how long this has been

At least Mick McCarthy would sort the defence out...

Arghhh - those names scare me Floridaboy - football under a McCarthy or McLeish team would be so dire. This will probably be laughed about but I think Glen Hoddle's the man. Know he's been out the game for a while but it's well known he wants to get back into the game and I am confident that he will deliver football we like to see at Portman Road. Just ban him from talking about disabled people!

I'd say no to all the managers above bar maybe Billy Davies (as he has consistency as a manager in this league). Why would the SkyBet suspend betting on him taking over at Town? - I can't see him coming here either - too long commute, but hey maybe his team of Jordan, Allen and Bond might fancy it (I doubt).

Just a suggestion but if M.E. is willing to pay the sort of money to get Harry Redknapps services then, and I know I'm gonna get flack for this, What about Benitez he's out of work and might just bring in something completely different, like scoring goals and winning

Right, now Jewell walk! Please just resign. We were lucky to get that goal today as once Charlton got their second, it could of been anything. Why on earth would Harry join us may i ask? He's not exactly going to once being a Spurs manager and nearly getting the England job, to join Ipswich, is he?

Barnsley now. And if they hit 5 against Birmingham away, then god knows what they'll do to us. Jewell OUT.

1st game I've managed to attend for a while due to petrol prices / working weekends and what I saw this afternoon was the worst performance I have ever seen at Portman Road.

No passion, no effort and no bottle. We didn't anything in the air, hardly won anything in the final 3rd and the communication was non existent. The players looked disheartened and not interested with the exception of Luke Chambers who I thought should have been man of the match.

Sorry Mr. Jewell, I've been a fan of yours since you came into our club and I thought things would change from the Keane era. Sadly they haven't any we are now going backwards. Do the honourable thing and walk before you get sacked... At least try to maintain some dignity.

Redknapp and Evans are very close think redknapp will see this as a challenge like Pompey I think I remember and look where he took them yeah money is being talked about (or lack of it pj has spent) but maybe just maybe Evans had this card up his sleeve and was keeping the money behind for the new manager in January which I believe jewell would of had with a new contract if we were going well!!

BuryBlue77, I never thought I would agree with H32 but I get those feelings when I watch ITV too! Now all you guys ranting away amaze me. Just for one minute stop and think. Do you really believe that Harry Redknapp, or any other real Manager, would come to Town where there is an absolutely non existent transfer fund and a Chief Executive who mucks up virtually every worthwhile negotiation he enters into so, while we remain in Evans hands, I for one just hope we can hang onto PJ otherwise we really will be down in the dumps without a Manager. If we cannot attract anybody, just think, Mr Clegg might have a go at running the club! This sounds fantastic but imagine an owner and a CE both without any understanding of how to run a football club. I feel very sorry for PJ because I think he has been dealt a very, very, foul hand.
