Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

I'm more interested in Jewell being sacked than Redknapp taking over. One step at a time! Keep googling Jewell sacked, but it just goes back to Derby, or Jewell taking over from Keane. One day I'll wake up and this nightmare will be over. One day...........

Surely speculation about Harry can be only that. It's to much to hope that it's genuine.

Truth is if change is to come let's do it before we tail off. Since the division is so average recovery is not beyond us yet.

Sacking a man after 7 games does seem harsh but after all the defensive problems this season and throughout so many before it's just not been sorted.

Game after game the story does not change. At least today we made some effort to chase the game unlike that dismal performance mid-week

If Harry is for real then I say do it, if not then we are back to the old question. Who next?

It's just so sad to see our club in such disarray from top to bottom.

To the club supporters I say this: You can moan whinge and say what you like before and after games and on sites like this BUT during a match some of the so called fans should be ashamed of themselves. Abusing your own player won't make it better!!

"cromwellblue" I totally agree, very well said. Abusing a player while the game is played, is completely out of order and disgrace

I really wish it had worked out, I was very much behind PJ and my support for him came to an end after the Wolves game, even Sindre has given up.
He has to go and I hope Evans doesn't hang around too long and puts Paul and us out of the misery.
If and when it does happen I will wish PJ all the best, nice guy but nit really working out here. And when I see him I the TV again I wont feel compelled to hurl things at the telly like I do when I watch football on ITV and have to put up with Keanes mug on there!

Of real concern to me is that it's virtually predictable that we'll concede at least 2 goals...probably from giving the ball away. And we not scoring at the other end.
We are just not seeing improvement.

I thought the team Paul Jewell put out (4-4-2) was ok. A big man, Murphy supporting Scotland and Martin looked lively on the left. The exception was JET who seemed laklustre from the word go, should have been Carson for JET. But we then saw numerous tinkerings in the formation and the team lost its shape, why did PJ change it.

We have already come to the point of the season where avoiding relegation will be seen as a success. PJ directive was to get us up or at least having us challenging for the top six. Clearly with PJ in charge this is not going to happen, time for PJ to go.

But having already picked two lemons as managers who does Evans go for next, I for one do not trust him. Assuming this fantasy rumour of Redknapp is not true, then its likely to be someone who has experience of getting teams up, you can see it now -Phil Brown, Paul Ince anyone?

So Jewell won't quit what does that say about the man? In my opinion it says he is a man without a sense of honour.

Jewell has to go. He clearly hasn't addressed our main problems from last year, the centre of defence. He had the whole summer to sort out the situation, and in the last few weeks he got rid of Delaney, who despite not being the best centre half, would have added competition for places. And he signs Higginbotham on a 1 month loan. Not got anything against Higginbotham but we are woefully lacking centre halves.

Yes from outside it may seem like sacking a manager 7 matches into the season is harsh but it is not the 7 matches that have made the fans feel like this. He has made mistakes ever seen he arrived, bringing in has beens on high wages, Bowyer for example. And his inability to attract players, although Clegg and Evans may be at fault for this too. I just hope the Redknapp speculation is true!

the Blue Klux Klan are going to be out tonight for Jewells head!

I think when the loan window closes will be the best time for a new manager to come in because he will hav an enforced period of time that he can acess whats at the club and once xmas comes he will have defined targets in place.

If Jewell was a man at all he would walk instead of taking Ipswich to Div1.
Look at his team selection picking Thomas instead of me and Im 44 but would put in more effort just kick him out of this club

Can't see Redknapp coming anywhere near the place - other than to buy a Burger.
Just cannot see it happening at all - I would be most surprised.

Get's the defence sorted loses the first choice strikers... play's players out of position and is unsure of their best position, is unsure of the best line up and the best formation. Can anyone tell me... is Jet a winger or a centre forward? Same question applies to Daryl Murphy? I feel sorry for P.J but this experiment has left his reputation in tatter's and the club is at a very low point. Being the optimist... the only way is up. And on the Harry Redknapp situation... I hear he likes a challenge, this is a BIG one.

Whatever happens COYB !!!!

Every game he seems to tinker around with the midfield, N'Daw played reasonably on Wednesday but was dropped today, Hyam still hasn't got a look in since his tweeked hamstring and yes the return of JET upfront, what a waste of space he is. 20 months into the job he stills tries to talk the talk but as we're finding out cant walk the walk. I was looking for a consistent start to this season (not necessarily in the top 4 or 5) but it's anything but, he has managed the same amount of games as Keane and has amassed 3 less points and 7 more losses, I wonder if anybody lets ME know this? He HAS to go!

Redknapp did well at Portsmouth and Spurs where he had some money but at Southampton and West Ham where he didn't they were relegated. he will be commuting from Poole and will bring all his own people including Kevin Bond. As soon as a premier job comes he'll be gone. It would lift the misery for a few weeks though

Harry Redknapp 4 to 1 with Sky Bet. Surely this has to be complete rubbish! Why on earth would he want to come hear when we are at very best an average lower table championship club!!

wibbletown added 19:19 - Sep 22
I think that everyone needs to take a reality check. There is no way in the world that Harry Redknapp would join Ipswich. We have no money and we are in the championship.
