Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

Can anyone please tell me why we bring on a loanee defender who apparently didn't get here till 2 a.m. and then stick him up front in the hope that he can do a strikers job.
What in god's name has this manager the right to the last gasp most cringe hoping of last straw clutching tactics. If that sums up his total football prowess then no wonder we have made such a s**t start to this season.
I am utterly convinced that if he is allowed to continue it is 1st division football next year.
I have never been one for expecting instant results from a manager/player, but that's the only way of judging a manager/player, and results are beginning speak for themselves.
ME has a plan, he backs the new manager with a certain amount of cash in his first year, then less in his second, we have seen that with Jim, Roy and Paul. That certain amount of money is shrinking with every new manager, and who can blame him. It is after all his money.
But the bottom line is that it is ME who shoulders the responsibility on appointing the manager.
We, the fans, can wish for all want, but i'm afraid our fairy godmother's have gone missing.
BTW, saw Paul Taylor hobbling along Felixstowe prom this morning, thought he looked sadder than i'm feeling. Missed you out there today. Please get well soon xxx.

Honestly Jewell, enough is enough. I won't quit. What a load of rubbish. PJ have to stand up and be counted. You have not delivered what you promised. Get out! Under Keane and Jewell my beloved Ipswich has been transformed to a bottomdweller in The Championship. It's bir not right people, it's just not right. Please bring in a manager with defensive substance. We defend like headless chickens. Who has the responsibility for that at Ipswich? On a final note; Most of the players who are at the club nowadays, are rubbish!!! No passion, no skill, no clue equals 5 points and 23th in the table. I'm so sad right now everyone, so very sad...........

i remember jewell saying that when we signed chopra we got the player that everyone wanted!! i think dave jones knew the score and that helps if you manage at this level, managers know players and jewell had been out too long!!hence signed the old boys network like bullard ellington etc who are all finished at this level!

All the news about managers, but in the directors box today were Steve Kean and Graham Taylor.
Cannot see Harry coming here his wages of himself and backroom would clean ME out, then he would need 20 mill to spend, look who started the Portsmouth issue by paying outrageous monies.
McCarthy for me, it wont be pretty but its effective.

Harry Redknapp heading for Ipswich Town?

A number of bookmakers have stopped taking bets on Harry Redknapp becoming the new manager of Ipswich Town.

Current Ipswich boss Paul Jewell has found himself under pressure following his side's slow start to the season, which has seen them fall into the Championship's relegation zone.

As a result a number of managers have been linked with the post, including Paul Ince and Dennis Wise.

However, following the recent decision of the bookies, Redknapp is now considered the favourite to replace Jewell.

Reports have claimed that Jewell could be sacked following the conclusion of today's match with Charlton Athletic.

Three changes of formation in the first half sneaks of a manager under pressure. On Wednesday we should have beaten Wolves but can't say that today despite Charlton being very ordinary. Lack of confidence is manifesting itself in appearing to lack effort. I will exempt Scotland, Chambers, Luongo and Ellington from criticism as they, at least, tried to make things happen, even if it didn't pay off for them. JET was abysmal again, Murphy and Martin ineffective, Cresswell out of sorts, Smith not good enough at this level and too easily beaten for second goal, as was Loach. Even Edwards and Drury, reliable 7 out of 10's, we're under par. It's annoying as we have the players but our set up and tactics are questionable and I think Paul Jewell is treading on thin ice now as we are currently not too good to go down

While I don't think Jewell is up to the job and sholuld go, the blame must lay with Marcus (faceless) Evans. Why do you think players wont come here? Because he will not pay decent money which the top players want. An example is David Norris who wanted to come back in the close season. We offered him 5 grand a week, Leeds offered 10, End of.
If he is not prepared to back the club he should put it up for sale and find someone who will. Someone with some footballing nous who would not appoint a know nothing like Clegg and who would take some advice from real football people like Micky Mills and Joe Royle

I dnt like calling for jewels head to fall but I think it's time to say enoughs enough! I feel that his methods are outdated and he is not in touch with the modern game. The same cd be said of his coaches too who look like they cd run a fast food outlet. I dnt dislike jewell as a man but it's obvious it ain't gng to improve. I'm not sure harry is for us if true, which I doubt. Please let us get a young vibrant coach - michael Appleton for me all the way! He is bright, knows the game inside out, had a gd background in coaching and has single handedly held back the tide at Pompey. If not, I wd love a true blue to come in but I dnt see anyone out there with the experience to do it unfortunately. I just want our club back in their with a fighting chance dng it the right way! At least the your set up and academy are gng in the right direction. Oh, please not mick mcCarthy! My best mates a wolves fan and he said it was the worse period under him they have had in years!

Anyone notice how Jewell made changes at the break today? Very unlike what we usually see; he usually gambles until halfway through the second half before he takes off invariably under-performing JET. I'm wondering if Evans gave him an ultimatum before the game and this sharper approach to substitutions was a last desperate attempt to keep his job?

If so, and his sacking is imminent, I can't say I'm not relieved. But please fellow Town fans, if Jewell stays and the bad results continue, don't call for his dismissal during matches. Booing at the final whistle is fair but chanting during the game is intrusive and will only affect the players. Look at the disgraceful example set by Blackburn fans: the poisonous atmosphere at all their games helped them on their way to relegation, in my opinion. Jewell out, but for the good of the club keep the protests away from match-days.

Well, where do i begin,Yes Jewell has to go now, results are bad, performances are not good and he looks like he has even lost the changing room,so it's close the door on your way out mr Jewell.

Now who comes in is the next big decision, and on Evans and Clegg's previous record,i hold my breath.

Harry Redknapp would be a good choice in the short term, maybe until the end of the season, but is that what our club really needs.

I think it would be a gamble to bring in a young manager in as we are in a dog fight at the moment,we need a motivator,a manager who can get more out of the players, make them believe in themselves,so Redknapp fits the bill there.

But Curbishley has been out of the game to long,Mccarthy, jury is out for me,but could be a wise choice in sorting the mess out.

Did i read earlier Dennis Wise,oh my god,no chance, complete waster,Paul Ince, again not for me,it's clear we need a change, but we have to get it right,my big concern is Marcus Evans doesn't really have a clue, will he get it right, well when i wake up tomorrow,i hope he has made the first decision, and that is get rid of the worst manager in our history, then it will b a case of watch this space i suppose.
