Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

As this is the longest thread ever, I'll add another comment... let's not lower ourselves to the level's that Norwich did when the fan's hounded out Glenn Roeder.

Let's just except that P.J didn't work, although there were probably loads of positive comments when he was hired such as...

"good young manager, proven at this level"

Keep supporting the team, and hoping the powers that be make the right choices COYB

I thought Jewell was the right man when he came, and he did well for a while clearing up Keanes ungodly mess. But for me the doubts started with the recruitment of Ellington and Bullard. Seemed like a man who had all his best ideas ten years ago. His press conferences just confirm it. Should have been sacked in summer, but he is a decent guy I reckon. Pay him off (I wish I would get same for being crap at my job) and lets get it sorted tomorrow.

Dozzels-Bobblehat and marcus139, well said, goes to show you can come on here and be constuctive in criticism for pj without being pathetic.

Couldnt agree with you more about Bullard/Ellington. I think the Bullard signing really did pj, bullard badly let him down.

I work for the club (I cant say what in case I get in trouble) and was hearing that Bullard was coming in drunk a lot and even on matchdays in the back of his dads landrover asleep under a blanket. However I cant substantiate it, was just a rumour rolling around the club.

Don't wanna jump on the bandwagon but Jewell must go, can't allow us to slide, recover and end up mid table again, get 'Arry in and give us a chance this season:-

Harmony! No more capitals, as they equal shouting in my book...I think everybody agrees Jewell should go. Lets all make sure we get behind next manager 110 percent right from start. We can still do something this season....

Roy Keane 81 games 28 losses

Paul Jewell 80 games 35 losses

Put your money on Harry Redknapp next Ipswich Town manager

How do people stand by a manager who has dragged this club down to being the worst we have been for many many years he has no heart for the club
0

Talbs77 added 20:33 - Sep 23
righty how do you know he has no heart for the club?

what a pathetic thing to say. How can you possibly substantiate that?

Look I think it may be time he went as well but no need to come out with things that are just not true.

We can level a lot of things at him but saying he has no heart is just well out of order.

I've been lambasted on here recently for my criticisms of Jewell but unlike Sindre I don't applaud every player we are connected with and excuse the management team for every deal that slipped through our fingers. We are all devasted to see our great club in the mess it is but why we turn on each other on here just goes to show why Portman Road has become a graveyard with no atmosphere. We won't all agree on the next manager but I'll cheer the team every week regardless of what doubts I post on here and believe most others will do the same so let's respect those that are brave enough to disagree with the next appointment and hope they are proved wrong.
