Jewell Set to Speak to Trialist Rocha But No Deal for Meite
Thursday, 27th Sep 2012 13:44

Town boss Paul Jewell says he will speak to trialist Ricardo Rocha tomorrow, but has confirmed that he won’t be offering terms to ex-West Brom and Bolton defender Abdoulaye Meite, who spent last week at Playford Road.

Jewell says ex-Portsmouth and Spurs man Rocha is one of a number of trialists currently at the club: “He’s been training with us for a week. There are a few players that we’ve had training with us for a week, lads that are out of contract. I’ve told him I’ll speak to him tomorrow.”

He confirmed that Meite, who told the French press he was still waiting to hear from Jewell earlier in the week, won’t be joining the club: “We won’t be pursuing that, I don’t think.”

Plenty of trialists have come and gone from Playford Road in recent weeks which Jewell says is nothing unusual: “Every club has them, it’s just that they don’t get reported like ours!

"The way that football is now, there are a lot of players that are out of contract who haven’t got clubs. Michael Owen was one, Emile Heskey was another one.

“The word trialist makes it sound as if you’re desperate. Sometimes we’ll just have a look at these lads in training for a week. It doesn’t cost us anything, it doesn’t do us any harm. We can assess their fitness, see where they’re up to and you might get one that works for you.

“You don’t want to just be taking anyone willy-nilly. We obviously know a bit about Rocha and Meite. Sometimes you’re looking at them to see what shape they’re in fitness-wise.”

Not sure about him,He is a bit older than I'd like and why have 2 over 30's in our defensive line up. Would rather we had Higginbottom for longer.

Any young trialists Paul? you did say you wanted to build for the future instead of wasting ME cash on old men this time around!!

just because somebody does not have a club , does not make them a crap player, take owen for example he left Man U and his wages were to high for another club to pay! so the player has to realise that he can not command the same pay as before , out his ego aside and sign for a club at far less than his original aspirations during the transfer window! so there are some good players out there looking for a club.

Very sensible comments from PJ. I know people say that PJ is desperate for a defender, but this shows it is being thought out carefully and we are not just rushing to get any old player.

Sorry but yet another loss of two more points Saturday, followed by two more at Brighton, but I really do hope I am wrong

Fair comments from Jewell, except the “Every club has them, it's just that they don't get reported like ours!".part..silly statement.

I don't think he's the right guy for the job at all but frankly he beats having the invisible man in the squad.

Wickets ... Loach,Hewitt,Chambers,Smith,Cresswell all young ,all for the future .What they need are some old heads and guidance to be taught their profession .Not many jobs throw just youngsters together and expect them to get on with it ?
But dont let the facts stop you moaning

Rocha would be a good signing. Redknapp would be a better signing.

Agree with AbujaBlue, It shows that PJ is at least thinking carefully about who is right for the club. I think its easy as fans to get annoyed and frustrated when players aren't signed but for a manager it is always a bigger picture and has to match a criteria, is he tall enough, is his fitness good, is he a communicator ect... not to mention the issue of wages. I feel more comfortable about the situation now anyway because of the Higginbotham signing but would ideally like to see a bit more pace if possible. The fact Jewell is taking his time tells me he wont be leaving anytime soon, which at least means he can get a more stable side sorted and not make rash decisions.

Facts Surco !!! have you been looking at the league table over the last few years?? The fact is PJ says one thing and then does another all the time. I'm not saying that we should not use the odd older player but the manager said he wanted to build for the future and too many loan players just does not work, i got it wrong last year i'm not going to do that again!!

I agree Edmund but where is the type of player you describe, we have needed him or them all the time PJ has been in charge and before.

Wickets he said he wanted younger players he then signed Hewitt,Chambers and Loach to our poor defence of last season ,all you will agree young players for the future ?
Nearly every team that has achieved promotion in the recent years you talk about have done it with loan players ,why should we be any different in the current financial climate ? And Rocha is a free agent so where does loan even come into it ?

Surco i never mentioned any names just what PJ says is different from what he does. Why make a rod for your own back? He now says has said "fans are entittled to be annoyed" Most of us are!! but you dont seem to think we should be!

So you think we will get two draws out of our next two games.
If we lose it's three points down the pan these days.
Anyway it's nice to know we have such a decisive manager, who might or might not be contacting extrialists.
“We won't be pursuing that, I don't think.”
But we might if we can't attract some other journey men and get desperate.
Sounds as if it was Meite who contacted the club and asked for a trial.

To be fair mikey95itfc; We just need any half competent players right now to add depth; I'd settle for that over decent right now any day of the week.

If you cast your mind back to when we played pompey at home 2 seasons ago we toasted them in the first half and he was one of them. We never scored and Mr Nugent did the rest.

IMO too slow and not the future. A big 3 games coming up and how many will be at thr Cardiff home game? If no wins in the next 2 games its a prime game to boycott to show clegg and co what people really think and not miss the game.

A call to action has to come from the fans at some point.
