Town Made Offer to Gabbidon
Wednesday, 3rd Oct 2012 10:13

Crystal Palace centre-half Danny Gabbidon has revealed that he had offers from the Blues and Nottingham Forest before deciding to join the Eagles last month. The 33-year-old, who was released by QPR in May, says he’s enjoying life at Selhurst Park and made the right decision.

Welsh international Gabbidon, who is yet to make his Palace debut, told the Croydon Advertiser: “I wanted to go somewhere I could enjoy myself with a good bunch of lads, enjoy my football again and work with a good manager.

"I had offers from Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest, who wanted me to go up and train with them, but it just didn't seem right with Forest as I wasn't sure they were totally committed and interested in me really.

"I worked with [Palace assistant manager] Lennie Lawrence when I was at Cardiff and Dougie [Freedman] is young, fresh and has good ideas.

"And I like the way they both complement each other, so I think Palace was the best option for me all round. I think I've made a good decision and I've really enjoyed my time at the club so far."

Its an utter disgrace that Palace can offer better terms and time and time again get our targets.

Clegg Out!

"Welsh international Gabbidon, who is yet to make his Palace debut"

So.. He hasn't played for them yet, he would have got guaranteed games here and Delaney has been playing ahead of him at Palace so I'm not really too sure if he is worth worrying about although an extra body would be quite useful.

@itfc1981

How the hell did you get that money had anything to do with his decision from those quotes?

The fact that Palace have a young hungry manager who has new ideas will be more of a draw to most professionals. Most clubs will be offering very similar terms at the moment, I don't believe that we are offering way below what anyone else is (other than the likes of Leicester and Blackburn) it just comes down to one simple thing, we are a club that is going nowhere so why would any player want to join us?

Never ever rated Gabbidon. Strong and big, but very slow-moving and vulnerable to a bit of guile. Being capped for Wales hardly guarantees quality!

Only good thing about Gabidon is the song that comes along with him.

King_of_portman rd, totally agree with you.

I much prefer Higginbotham. He's just what we've lacked, a bit of organisation and leadership at the back is all that was needed

Chrice

Basing it on the number of recent targets who have chosen the mighty Eagles over us. they have crap facilities, crap ground. no history. They dont have Simon Clegg So therefore it must be money.

just a second note: Dougie Freedman will be a great manager in the not so distant future.. as long as the Scotland job doesnt interfere..

too injury prone to be a good signing..

Those of you complaining about us not signing him because of money etc seem to be overlooking the fact that he previously played for qpr and wet spam so is probably London based.

For those who are blubbing, isn't the clue as to why he favoured Palace here:-

"I worked with [Palace assistant manager] Lennie Lawrence when I was at Cardiff...

Money has everything to do with it. PJ is young, he is experienced and given the right tools I'm sure he'd do a lot better than he is now.

ANY player who is at the exit door of his career-33- is certainly looking for the best pay packet for his last couple of years. The player who will play for the pleasure and to be a servant to the club and the supporters is a rare think these days.

itfc1981 - what a totally ridiculous statement. As already stated you have absolutely no proof of it being SC's fault , it is just a complete guess, but the main point would be that Palace and many other clubs may regret not taking a harder stance on wages when the Fair Play rules come in. Quite why you and others seem to think we have a god given right to sign any player we want amazes me.
My guess would be that geography played a big part in this particular signing as by going to Palace he hasnt had to move, but of course that doesnt provide an opportunity to whinge so you probably didnt consider it.

Probably went to Palace because it is more convenient for him and his family rather than simply money. If Delaney is keeping out of the side, we have had a lucky miss!

Seems to me that chrice, Lesta_Tractor and Bournemouth blue are making the key points here.
Mind you, if you were a footballer at any stage of your career, would you be wanting to come to Ipswich at the moment? Money aside, the club has a very secretive owner and a CEO who shows no PASSION for football. Man management, team selections and tactics would also seem odd to a keen or experienced player.

Yeah not crying in me cuppa over this one, was hardly a world beater!

The fact that he might have wanted to live in London over Ipswich is also an element.
