Jewell Says Goodbyes
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 14:22

Departing Blues boss Paul Jewell said his goodbyes at Portman Road this morning, still frustrated that things didn’t work out for him at Town. The Liverpudlian’s time as manager of the Blues was ended by mutual consent on Wednesday.

Speaking in a lengthy interview with Ipswich Player, he said: “I’m gutted it hasn’t worked out and even now looking around the place, it’s so frustrating that it hasn’t worked out.

“I could not have given any more because I was desperate to see Portman Road packed and the club being successful and it’s the right decision for me to leave.”

He says he’s given Town a glowing reference to prospective successors: “I had a few managers on the phone to me yesterday and I told them don’t hesitate as the job is now available because it’s a great football club and I really hope the club goes on to great things because it deserves it.

“Ipswich is also in very good hands with the owner. Marcus doesn’t interfere in any decisions football-wise and is right up there with the best chairmen I have worked with — and I have worked with some really good ones.

“I know there might be some people out there knocking him but sometimes people need to be careful what they wish for. He’s 100 per cent committed to the club and wants success for Ipswich as much as anyone.”

Thanks Paul. Pity things didn't work out. You seem to be a decent bloke. Not one ounce of bitterness. Best of luck for the future.

Best of luck Paul...

I do not doubt that you did your best and had the club's best intentions at heart, which is what has partly made the last few weeks so difficult for everyone connected with ITFC, always seem like a decent guy but in the end enough was enough and I personally think since the wolves game, there was only ever going to be one outcome!

I hope things work out for you elsewhere and thanks for your efforts..

A gent to the end! Good luck to you in the future.

Might have worked but was always going to be a struggle with some of the lazy excuses we have for players! Time for a clear out!

I'd say cheerio, but he doesn't read this. Or newspapers.

Wilkins, Coyle, or Curbs.

He should take a year out, observe other managers and develop better tactical knowledge as well as also spending some time doing something entirely unconnected with football. I imagine that there are Norwich fans with a joke ready about that last clause.

One thing I have thought for a while now is if PJ might make a better assistant manager? This could work if the manager has a difficult personality. A Roy Keane and Paul Jewell dream team? :-)

Really emotional interview actually, having watched it. At one point he referred to the club as "we" and had to correct himself. Seemed really despondent, and actually said some honest and refreshing things about our position and what went wrong.

Nice guy, but he didn't have a great rapport with the fans, and was rather inept. Can't fault his commitment, though. Wish him the best, but it's onwards and upwards now.

I never felt any sympathy for Keane when he left, he didn't play football the right way and was to stubborn of a bloke to like, even though we sat bottom and I knew it was best for PJ to go and that we could look forward, I was a bit gutted because PJ was a decent bloke, tried to get us playing some good football and I would have liked him to succeed, not to be. best of luck.
