Town Confirm McCarthy Manager
Thursday, 1st Nov 2012 09:10

Mick McCarthy has been confirmed as the new manager of Ipswich Town. The 53-year-old has signed a contract until the summer of 2015 and will be joined at Portman Road by his former Wolves assistant Terry Connor.

McCarthy said: “I’m obviously delighted to have been given the job as Ipswich Town manager and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“It’s a fantastic football club, with a proud tradition and history and a terrific fanbase.

“While the long-term ambition is to take the club back into the Premier League, it’s clear that the first priority is to get some confidence back into the team and start climbing the table.”

Blues chief executive Simon Clegg added: “I am delighted to welcome Mick and Terry to Portman Road.

“We are under no illusions of the challenge ahead for this club given our position in the table but we feel we have the right manager to lead that challenge.

“Mick has a wealth of knowledge in the game and has shown that he knows how to compete successfully in the Championship in his time at both Sunderland and Wolves.

“While the first task is to guide the club away from our current position, we believe Mick has all the credentials and drive to eventually bring success back to Ipswich Town.”

McCarthy has previously managed Millwall, Sunderland and Wolves at Championship level - taking the latter two clubs into the Premier League - and has an impressive record: Played 407 Won 185 Drew 115 Lost 107. His win rate at this level is 45.4%.

McCarthy and Clegg will hold a press conference at Portman Road at 5pm this evening which BBC Radio Suffolk is broadcasting live online.

I like many thought that PJ should have gone to give a new manager the international break to get some coaching done. Dare I say that ME deserves some credit for his loyalty - giving PJ and team every opportunity to turn it round ... even when the manager himself went public about perhaps needing to walk

We bemoan the loss of Ipswich standards - but looking for the wood behind the trees we still are a great club - I've siad on another thread that the 3.5 year deal will give Mick security but he will not abuse that from what we have seen of him.

And if he can deal with Roy Keane as a player he will have the non-performers into shape (as a team or as an "exit sign" - they can choose which shape they want to be!!) in no time

I say this for the last time ever - I thought that Holloway was our man - but you just HAVE to be happy with the quality of man and manager we have just landed.

Well done ME and SC - thank you.

See you at the Burnley match !

:)

Just like to back up the majority of positive comments, for me the type of manager we need to motivate these under performing players. On paper we should be top six, with MM he will sort who is interested and who is not. Lets not expect miracles immediately, as long as we can see progress and more commitment during November Ill be happy COYB

Have to say, from day 1 I wasn't too pleased with Jewell's appointment. An utter about-turn on this one.

I really think Mick is what the club needs at this point in time and all the reports of players not putting a respectful and required amount of effort in is, I am sure, about to end.

What odds a much higher attendance this week? Seems certain to me...

Well said Cheshire_Blue. Bored of all the negative doom mongers on this site. Lets get behind OUR team and give the Manager OUR full support. We can get out of this mess if we all stick together. Good luck Mick and Terry. Up the Town.

You've been in charge at least an hour now... why aren't we in the Promotion positions yet?

Mick as other contributors have implied... KICK SOME ASS!

Oh and welcome, hope you have a tremendously successful time here... a few goals would be nice.

I really can't get excited about this although I like the sound of his history, I do like that Terry Conner, felt really sorry for him when he was left with nothing to work on at Wolves!
Looking forward to seeing them lift us off the bottom... COYB

YES! Great appointment both in terms of shaking up those who need it and, with some promised funds, building for next season (although hopefully with a good shaking up all/most of current premanent squad will be up for it now and we won't need big- unsettling- turnover come January.
Well done to ME and SC- as reported others were after MM. Also shows the respect MM has for us that he chose us over Bolton, Forest.

Im glad that this has been finalised before saturday. I would love to know why so many fans were/are against his appointment. Mick is a very good manager and we can see that from his record. 45% win record.... It has certainly been a while since Ipswich won 21 matches in a season. Mick will kick both our flops and the players that have actually underperformed up the arse. Sadly chops, edwards, jet martin etc were good last season but have done poorly and as they are our top paid players they should either better their standards of football or expect Mick to have a word or three. SORT IT OUT!!! I personally think that we should have hyam and carson playing. They are young and are certainly bright prospects for our football club and do not tend to let the side down. I look forward to a fresh start and will be at the next home match against Burnley (I think!) in full voice. COYB!!

Welcome Big MicMac..., all the very best. While not my top choice, I do believe we are fortunate to land him in our present state. The decline has set in deeply since the Keane era, the job is still a salvage operation from that time.

I presume Mick & Terry are taking training today if Hutch has left? I presume that's why the press conference is at 5 ... I'm just thinking out loud, just ignore me :)

I confidently expect Ipswich to climb the table, especially from the Jan. window onwards. Mick has proved himself to be the best Championship manager there is and I feel more confident in his progress over the next few months than I do in ours.
If there is one match I will not miss this season it's Ipswich at home and Mick will get a standing ovation from me to show my gratitude. I feel envious of the Ipswich supporters for the times they have to come with the most honest, decent, straight manager there is.

2 promotions, 3 other play off finishes, has managed at international level, great win rate (45%) at Championship level. Mick gets his teams organised, he signs/plays people who are committed and hard working. Exactly what this club needs. I can see Hyam being a regular and one of Mick's favourites in the engine room, a home grown product who cares about the club and gives 100%. He will probably go back to Drury partnering him, which has worked very well at times.

I seem to recall Wolves playing fairly attractive football when they got promoted as champions in 08/09. Jarvis and Kightly on the wings supplying Iwelumo and Ebanks-Blake up front.
