Millwall Linked With Martin
Tuesday, 25th Jun 2013 17:14

Millwall are reported to be leading the chase to sign former Blues midfielder Lee Martin. The 26-year-old left Portman Road at the end of the season.

A number of other clubs are said to be interested in the one-time Manchester United man, who spent four years with the Blues.

Town offered Martin vastly reduced terms in May but the winger opted to move on and look for a new club.

Joining Millwall - who are at Portman Road on the second weekend of the new season - might suit Martin, who was brought up not far away in Bromley.

If he'd agreed to the relatively generous terms offered to him by Jewell early last season, he'd have been signed up for another couple of years with us. Now he'll probably end up on a lot less money somewhere else like Milwall. Can't help feeling slightly pleased that his greed 12 months ago has cost him.

He had great work rate and good pace, just his final delivery and chipping in with goals that let him down

And we care about this because? He's history, move on.

Let's be honest, given that he was being booed he wouldn't have stayed on any new terms. Why stay somewhere when the fans have turned on you? But Millwall!? Wow! Thought he'd get a better offer than that! If you're not delivering or living up to your potential, that's the last place id go especially if my confidence was already low!!

I'd like him to have stayed. Grant might prove a decent signing but as of yet, we haven't been linked with any better!

Makes me smile just to know i wont see him in an Ipswich shirt anymore. Another team can enjoy the frustration of watching the big timer Charlie.

quite righty Keaneish we have not been linked with anybody better and some of thre comments on here show the problem we have with a small bunch of pessamistic negative idiots who pick a player to pick on and try and hound them out of the club.
martin is a player who should play behind a central forward yet never moaned about constanly being on the left wing always put a shift in.
he always looked like he cared gave 100% and lets not forget was offered a deal by mick so mick must rate him.his temper got the better of him a few times because he actually cared and your going to struggle to find a winger who provides better protection for cresswell.
we should be wishing him well not slagging him off.
the boo boys wont want reminding of there slagging previosly
a certain d delaney-now promoted, grant leadbitter-boro player of the year.
i hope that attitude changes or i fear for grant if he does come and have a couple of bad games

@Theobald1985. Great post. Lee Martin was decent behind the front striker, albeit with a lack of goals. He was the heartbeat of the side in many games. Very unlucky with his red card at Forest - there have been lots of opposition players last season got away with more. Often unfairly treated by some moronic sections of PR.

Like you correctly said MM liked him & offered him a new contract, just not at the same high rate he earns for 4years, which makes me think that Millwall can't surely afford him, if we couldn't. As for a replacement, MM hasn't found one yet & I think he will be missed.

I would have liked MM & TC to have had a pre-season with him to really know if those goals would have come.

Martin's quality was not on show enough.
Cannot see McCarthy creating a team so he can play behind the front player (McGoldrick drops deep anyway) and with his end product - what does he bring? Energy? we want quality - the energy / high work rate should be a given.
Martin was not unlucky at Forest - what he did away from home was right in front of the ref and stupid (not for the first time in his career)- Stearman was unlucky in that game to be sent off for his challenge.

Tony Martin has a better shot than Lee

He was shocking, people said he had a good 'work rate' but there's a difference between a player who runs around like a headless chicken getting booked, and someone like our own jay tabb who runs about and gets his tackles in and comes up with key interceptions! Good riddance poor milwall haha

Theobald1985... I agree with your argument over fans not getting behind players but feel it is misplaced with Martin . He was signed as a winger by Keane ,it only came out he preferred playing just behind a front man when he had a semi decent spell there ,unfortunately for a second forward you need to create or score ,Martin offered very little of either . I don't doubt his workrate but someone who runs up and down the line a lot with no end product and who cant tackle hence the number of sendings off in his time here does not make a good player.
Delaney was pretty poor his whole time here and I cannot see him in the premiership for very long if at all ,and for Leadbitter to win Boro player of the year shows how far Boro fell last season from a side challenging in playoffs to a bottom half team 5 points off the drop lower than us after our poor season

you lot slagging off lee obviosly are saying you have no faith in mick then and dont trust his judgment!
mick played lee virtually everytime he was available and offered him a contract.
if a player is trying which lee always was he should not be targeted by the boo boys.
maybe delaney is not good enough for ther pl time will tell.
he clearly was a decent championship player tho and the boo boys wanted him out.
lee was picked on when here which affected his confidence and confidence is the absolute key. The quality of players in this league is a much of a muchness in my view what we need to do is build a team with good squad unity and the fans to get right behind them. If a player has a bad game its fair to assume that thay did not want to have a bad game and want to improve so a slagging from the ITFC boo boys is not going to help. I think proper football people have all seen lee martins merits, he has not got to where he is today by being a bad player and what do you think other clubs want to sign him for! Warkys tash seems to understand-thanks for your comment

Agree with Surco, am not sorry to see Martin leave. Effort, no problem. Effective, very rarely. Time after time he would make the wrong decision where a pass was the best option rather than taking on three players and losing it. I just don't feel he had a very good footballing brain when it came to making those type of decisions. His goal scoring record at Town was appauling and the number of times he got himself into good positions with open goals or only the keeper to beat and put it wide or over the bar!
I feel that Martin was given the opportunity by Keane, Jewell and McCarthy on plenty of occassions and never came up to the mark. The fans on the whole were patient and towards the end of his time grew less so, which agreed didn't help him but that is the time he needed to show them, and didn't. If I recall he even got loaned out at some stage in his Ipswich career (sure someone will remember, Phil?)
Good luck at Millwall, think you will need it!

I have faith in MM which is why he didn't fight very hard to keep Martin ,if he wanted him he would be here the same as Murphy and Tabb or are you doubting him Theobald for letting Martin go ? Or is he just a money grabber not committed to Ipswich ? As of yet no one has signed him and the best he can hope for is lower championship relegation fight or lower league football .
Martin has played for 9 clubs at the age of 26 and made it nowhere ,for a player who wants to play in the front 2 he has scored 12 goals in 200 games ? Even Keane saw the error of his ways on this one and loaned him out

Thanks for clearing that one up Surco, was fairly sure he had been loaned out. Having had a spell at Man U he perhaps feels he is better than he actually is? Scoring and creating goals is what helps win games and LM was found lacking here. The spells where Town have found a bit of form over the last few years tended to be when Martin was not playing. Championship maybe too high for him as Surco pointed out there is no stampeed for his signature by the sound of it.

surco-mick offered him a contract-if he did not want him he would not have done end of story-mick would not offer him one if he did not want him as what if he sais yes.
Lee has got somewhere with his career he has been played whenever fit by mick and jewell who recalled him immidietly from charlton as soon as he came in.
I saw him play for charlton I think on boxing day at colchester--best player on the park that day no question but then the fans got behind him there.
he came up through the ranks at the best club in the world and made a first year proffesional and has since played in the championship which us one of the best leagues in europe.
he has made loads of apperances for us and has chosen to leave as he has been asked to take a significant pay cut.
I think mick and all the other coaches and managers who have signed and rated him over the years proberbly have a better idea than a few idiots who seem to just want to slag somebody off.
it is such a shame some people at my club have to be like this as its just embarrsing

Lee Martin 108 appearances for ITFC and only 6 goals. 1 goal every 18 games. Bet his red card record at ITFC is similar?

some typically harsh comments here. Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly like the guy (just something about him!) but hardly the worst player to ever pull on a Town shirt. Couldn't fault his work rate, he just lacked end product! - also not his fault that Keane paid too much for him and offered him high wages.
