Dyer Retiring
Saturday, 6th Jul 2013 20:45

TWTD understands that former Blues midfielder Kieron Dyer will retire from professional football this summer, having been released by Middlesbrough at the end of last season. Dyer, 34, came through the Town academy and went on to play for England, Newcastle, West Ham, QPR and finally Boro during the second half of last season.

Ipswich-born Dyer made his debut as a late sub in a 3-1 home victory over Crystal Palace in December 1996.

He went on to make 104 starts and 13 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring 14 goals, before moving to Newcastle for a fee which eventually rose to £6.5 million in the summer of 1999.

Having been a regular for the England U21s, he broke into the senior side while at St James’s Park and went on to win 33 caps, featuring in the 2002 World Cup as a sub on three occasions and briefly at Euro 2004.

However, Dyer’s career was to be hampered by a succession of injuries which limited his appearances during a four-year spell at West Ham from 2007 to 2011, a short loan stint back at Town in which he made one start and three sub appearances, in 18 months at QPR and a six-month spell working under his old Town team-mate Tony Mowbray at Middlesbrough.

Wish Kieron well, probably the most gifted player I have seen in a town shirt. If only he didn't suffer with all the injuries I'm sure would have got close to 100 England caps. Be good to see him involved with us in some capacity in future

Would be great for our youngsters to be coached by him. An inspiration for many. Hopefully he'll continue to be involved with the academy.

Agreed, 24, and I've been watching Town since the days of Crawford, etc.

I remember him as a 15 year old or so, wheeling disabled folk into their places in the enclosure at the foot of Churchmans.

We talk of attacking or defensive midfielders. In his younger days he was both, even better defensively than Warkie. He got back to make goal saving tackles when most players would have given it up as a lost cause and not even tried.

Best wishes to Kieron.

Sorry above, but Im not sure dyer would make a good coach at all. Injuries happened, but off the field you never thought his head was totally in it. By far the best player I've seen come through at town, but so much unfulfilled potential.

I'm nit sure thats the best

...role model for our lads. Just my opinion, don't hate me for that! Just never really thought his head was quite right!

He's been virtually retired for at least 5 years anyway.

Hey look, I totally loved the lad as a player. But good players don't always make great coaches. Some people are just born brilliant without having to think it through. I think Dyer was one of those.

Well see. If MM wants him in, then I support him!

Shame all the injuries stopped him fulfilling his potential. Terrible role model as a person so couldn't be a coach unless he has seriously grown up. Iy

All the best Kieron and respect for the input you have always had with the academy since leaving ITFC... Ideal academy coach perhaps?

Always had great ability, just was very unfortunate with injuries, especially after he broke his leg playing for West Ham. Would be nice to see him in a coaching role somewhere. Thanks for the memories Kieron!

I was at QPR v Ipswich back in 96/97, and saw a (very) young Keiron Dyer come on as a sub. One of the first things he did was kick the ball around one side of Rufus Brevitt (who was no slouch) and run around the other. Knew immediately we had a hell of a player about to break through.

We were lucky enough to see him playing the best football of his career, and his sale funded our promotion in 2000 - so I can't understand why any Town fan would have ill-feeling towards him!

Also, the lad has also put a lot back into the club over the years, which I hope isn't forgotten if he looks to stay on in the game.

All the best, Keiron

We wish him well. Never able to fulfill his undoubted talent, due to a rotten record with injury. Very unfortunate.

Best of luck Keiron, 33 International caps in an injury plagued career is a fantastic achievement.

Best of luck to him, great player for us when he was here.

I think he would have a longer career in spain where getting the sh1te kicked out of you is not the only way to deal with decent players.

Injury blighted his career, that's why you can never moan when a player moves to another club to get more money. You never know when injury could end your career. It's not necessarily a question of being greedy but planning for your retirement.

When I was 9-13 Keiron was my hero, I won't ever forget him lobbing the keeper at Stockport County. He was an exciting player in an exciting team.

Keep him away from the youngsters of town. Hes a bad role model and has a bad attitude. He stands for every thing that shouldnt be in the game.
