McCarthy: Hyam Should Ignore Negativity
Tuesday, 24th Dec 2013 12:06

Boss Mick McCarthy has told midfielder Luke Hyam to ignore the negativity from the section of the Town support which jeered him during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Watford and subsequently made similar comments on social media.

In his post-match press conference McCarthy urged fans to back the former Northgate High School pupil — a Town supporter as a youngster — while the midfielder tweeted his frustration at his treatment soon after the game: “I love haters so keep on hating.”

“Read all the good stuff, take no notice of the negativity,” was McCarthy’s advice to the 22-year-old on how to cope with the situation. “There are always numpties out there who want to write [negatively] on Twitter.

“I don’t know why people do it because it doesn’t make anybody play any better. But the majority [of fans] are fantastic, there are the odd few who create a negative environment in which to try and play. It does my head in.

“But what you’ll find is that he’ll get great support, certainly from me and from everybody else, all the players, because they value what he does. He’s somebody who puts a shift in like he does every week.

“Is he the best player in the world? No, he isn’t, because if he was he wouldn’t be here. But what he does is give his all for Ipswich and that’s what people should appreciate.”

The midfielder seems certain to be in McCarthy's side at Doncaster on Boxing Day.

I would never boo an ITFC player. It is perhaps understandable if a player was not trying, but Hyam works ever so hard and puts everything into the matches. If he has a poor game, it is not through want of trying. So what good does a boo do? Surely those fans should aim their anger at McCarthy for picking him, but would they really critisise a manager who is doing so well for us? Get real and get behind the whole team!

I would have told him to treat them as Norwich city supporters , there is no difference

Before I get slatted I think the treatment of Hyam by some fans was disgraceful, I agree he has been a bit hot or cold this season, however he has featured in the majority of games this season & we sit 9th in the table 3 points off the play off places, surely that must show his value to McCarthys system, my main thought is, I wonder if because he is a local lad, we want him to be 10% faster, harder, more committed, quicker passer etc... Is this because we believe he's hit the dream of "the local lad, playing for his boyhood team" & some fans allow their passion of the dream to overflow into criticism??..... Just a thought.

The whole thing has been blown out of all proportion, he had a poor game and there were a few shouts from the stands from frustrated supporters. The longer everyone keeps banging on about it the bigger the issue seems, for me it really was a non-event. Move on.

I wonder how many of the booers have played at any level at all. If they never had a bad game, had the ability or made bad decisions in game, then they wouldn't have fallen by the wayside and would now be considered legends. Instead they are t*wats!

Keep giving it all for us Luke!

Best way to shut everyone up is to have a blinder on Boxing Day.

Luke Hyam is a good player. People need to forget about him being a goal scorer - he never will be. He does a solid job for the team and is a crucial cog in the McCarthy system.

SouperJim - ..... absolutely right - people pay there money and have the right to a voice - every player gets booed at some point, but this has all been blown out of proportion by people with nothing better to do. PATHETIC to say the least.

If the lad has it in him- let him go out in the next game and do what he hasn't been doing - to prove his point.

You are probably the very same people who kept saying (when he left) that Rhodes hadn't proved himself, wouldn't make it at a higher level etc: etc; - he didn't get much support from you did he ? - so why such an outcry when Hyam gets a few adverse comments.

Move on - and lets get RESULTS individually and teamwise - and stop dwelling on pathetic issues. End of.

He just doesn't get it does he? There is no other way for a football fan to voice their disapproval. Hyam and Mick should NOT ignore it. They should take note of the criticism. Unfortunately Luke is not good enough at this level, in my opinion, and, like it or not, my opinion WILL be heard.

I also disagree with Mick that criticism does not make people play better, it might make them feel bad, but pain can be an effective motivator and I expect Mick is actually using this situation to motivate Luke.

flashblue - agreed - unfortunately some are incapable of seeing anything other than the picture they want to see.

As for the PATHETIC comments from people saying 'stay away' unless you agree with EVERYTHING the Club, MM and Players do - GET REAL - without Supporters there is NO CLUB. We need all we can get thro' the Turnstiles - and NOT just you people.

Flashblue & blueboy1981 - You're both talking sh*te. There is absolutely no logic in fans booing a player who is having a poor game, if anything it's counter productive at best and makes the fans look like tw*ts for turning on their own players for little reason. It's not like Hyam doesn't give it his all every game, he's working hard to improve that side of his game so there really is no need to damage his confidence even further when I'm sure he already knows he's not playing well.
When someone is having a bad game, what's the point in booing them? It makes no sense and it would be much more effective to get behind the player and encourage him to pick it back up. But of course there always has to be someone on here who sees the absolute worst in every situation, right?

Where was this poor game one misplaced pass from a very good move in the making and that miss at the end give it a rest, far and beyond many very experinced players have had much bigger howlers its not that long ago we calling out for Luke to be in the team carry on Luke I am sure this is just water of the ducks back to you

Why should Mick listen to the 'numpties'. I'm pretty sure he has achieved more in Football management than those booing him. Mick has done a great job at Ipswich so if he is happy with Luke and all the other players for that matter, then so am I.

Blueboy , Souperjim .... What a couple of muppetts !!! Nobody expects you to agree with everything the club say or do and of corse everybody has a right to a voice . We all have a few moans and groans when something goes a bit wrong on the pitch because it is frustrating when you want things to go so right and they don't . But to spit abuse at a young player giving his all and still learning so much about the game is bulls**t . Being a fan is about supporting the team , supporting the players on the pitch , That's what we do as fans isn't it ? Why would you want to throw abuse at a young player like Luke ? A local lad , one we call our own . Everybody makes mistakes but the last thing ITFC needs are fans like this and muppetts like you on here trying to justify it . IMWT .. COYB !!!

I think booing him is a bit far but what I find frustrating is people like Loach get dropped the second they make a mistake but Hyam does seem to get favourable treatment and still keeps his place even when he's playing poorly.

Who knows if he will make it long term but I don't care who it is if you are playing badly you shouldn't be in the team when for once we actually have depth in the squad.

I believe some supporters are pi--ed off with MM who keeps picking Luke who is under performing when we have other options who would most probably do a better job or it would at least be nice to see i for one would like to see a more creative player in there with Scuse i.e. Wordsworth like i have said before we are restricted to shots from outside the box because we don't have a creative midfielder playing.

Garv added 15:44 - Dec 24
Don't think people understand this. Fans aren't booing Hyam, it's more likely to be the fans booing Mick's decision to pick him.

Maybe I'm wrong, because I wasn't there on Saturday, but I don't think anyone actually intends to boo the player, whoever it is.

Football fans boo when they don't agree with something, it's natural. What else are they meant to do? Quite a few fans have been saying Hyam shouldn't be in the team for ages.

Can we just clear this whole overblown mess up. Nobody booed him. It was one misplaced pass in the 2nd half which spoiled a good move. It was 15000 people groaning in tandem at a chance spurned that's all it was.
We all did it so people need to get off their high horse and stop making fans out to be poor fans.
Now can we forget this and move on to Thursday? Merry Christmas!!
