Forest Away Awaits Replay Winners
Sunday, 5th Jan 2014 14:02

The winners of the third round replay between Town and Preston at Deepdale a week on Tuesday will play Nottingham Forest away in the fourth round.

Forest thrashed West Ham 5-0 at the City Ground in their third round tie this afternoon.

Town were last at Forest in the Championship last month when the game ended 0-0.

The teams have previously been drawn together three times in the FA Cup. In January 1981 the Blues won 1-0 at Portman Road in a replay following a 3-3 draw at the City Ground.

Forest won 3-0 at home in the 1988/89 season and again at the City Ground by the same scoreline in the 1996/97 campaign.

Forest very much have the upper hand overall, winning 34 of the games between the two sides with 15 ending in draws and Town victorious 19 times. It's just over 14 years since the Blues last won at the City Ground.

Fourth round ties will be played on the weekend of January 25th and 26th when the Blues are currently scheduled to face Reading at home in the Championship.

If MM wants to take the cup seriously, this is a decent and winnable draw (West Ham were dire, so not TOO scared of Forest).

However, yesterday's line-up suggests that MM isn't that bothered by the cup: expect more fringe selections vs Preston away and IF we scrape that one, more reservists to play Forest in round 4.

Bit of a pity really: anyone who's played champ man knows that good Championship clubs always get a good cup run on their way up!

Our form is better away from home than at home, no reason why we can't progress in cup.

I was hoping for either a home draw or a premier league team, this is a disappointing draw.

McCarthy needed to rest his 1st team players as 4 games in 10 days is too demanding!?

7 changes were made and it was clear to see that it was the worst home display (the Barnsley game comes a close 2nd in my opinion) so having said this why do the Preston fans think its going to be easy for them in the replay!? I trust McCarthys judgement of his squad, we should see a better stronger team starting at Deepdale although 4 successful away games will be daunting, trips to Preston (550mile round trip), to Leeds (450mile round trip) and to Nottingham (350 mile round trip) Town are certainly going to earn some flyer miles in the next month.

Reckon MM thought fringe players would be up for it. Don't think he will make the same mistake again. Keep going we are hard to beat & maybe we can go to wembley twice this season. Thumbs up please!!!!

no, its not man utd or Chelsea at home but going to Nottingham at least means the chance to spend lunchtime in Hooters again. so will get some entertainment at least.

The FA Cup games are little more than glorified friendlies for most teams now. Sad to say from someone who remembers 1978 but it's true.

Poor draw and no stand out ties really.

If we beat Preston it means a postponed home game against Reading.

If we get past Preston it will be very interesting to see what sort of team. Forest put out because they are also going for promotion and might see the cup as a needless distraction so put out a weakened side. I suggest we send our teenagers and Alan Lee on a nothing to lose basis.-

As a supporter I want to see Ipswich winning every game they play in and personally the longer we stay in the FA Cup the better. Winning is a habit which I hope MM and the players appreciate. At the moment we have a drawing habit which we have to break if we are going to stay in the playoff zone. Remember a league win followed by a defeat is 50% better in terms of points than 2 successive draws. I would like to see MM picking his strongest available side for every match - squad players should only be slotted in when there are injuries to the current first choice team .MM as good as admitted that 7 fringe players all playing at the same time was a mistake. I don't think he will make that mistake again in the replay which I would like us to win. A defeat at Preston would not do the spirit or confidence of the team any good.

we havent got past Preston.. Dont think we should be so pompous with who we may be playing in any round.. A good cup run will do us the world of good..

have to agree with everyone who has said it is seemingly an underwhelming draw. It is certainly difficult prioritising between our league campaign and progression in the cup. We would all love a cup run, as it boosts the coffers a little bit and also gives the fringe players a chance to play some competitive football, providing they take the chance given to them. IF and it's a massive IF we finish in the play off places we could end up playing forest another 2 times. to play the same team 5 times in one season potentially is crazy

Happy with that... Avoided a premier league team (why would we want one) and a quality boys night out on the beer. What more could any true supporter of Ipswich want ?.... Whoops I forgot, most of our fans prefer to watch the premier league teams at Portman road (and beat us) rather than the team that they supposedly support !

i think most people would want us to get a premier side on the off chance we may cause an upset and attract a better crowd for perhaps a better atmosphere surely ?

What's the bloody matter with all you miserable gits?

This is the FA Cup! and should damn well mean something to you, there is nothing better than a trip to Wembley or glamour home or away game! But here's the thing.....we'll have to get past the likes of Preston and Forest for any chance of that to happen or wait until January 2015!

I'd be surprised (pleasantly) if we got promoted this year, so this is a great way to earn a bit of glory, so let's get on it! COYB!

Do away with FA Cup replays. Resolve the game on the day with extra time and PKs.

If your a manager of a professional team and you don't want to win a game, especially the cup - quit.

If you are a player in a team and you do not want to go out to win and give your all - quit.

I'm getting a bit fed up with all this negative stuff creeping in at ITFC. I'm a supporter of ITFC and I for one want them to win everything, but most of all I want everybody to bl**dy well try!!

Whatever you say about the magic of the cup you'll find it hard to feel it amongst 7000 at Preston and if we win 14000 at Forest. I'll go to Preston but hate Forest, Billy Davies and Henri Lansbury so will probably give it a miss unless my 7 year old wants a ground tick.

Remember that titanic 3-3 draw at Forest, the 1-0 replay win at a packed PR. Most of you obviously don,t judging by the comments on here. Lets take Preston seriously, then bring on Forest. Would be a great day out.

If we beat PNE that means the Reading home match will be a Tuesday night game. hoora! love a Tuesday evening under the floodlights.

Well said Paulc.

Lets get on with it, get on with everything that's thrown at us and prove we want to succeed, not just throw in the towel and keep winging!.

With only one all Prem match up (Chelsea v Stoke) Forest v Ipswich (IF we get through) is one of the more attractive ties and a good chance of being screened live. Unless they opt for the chance of a giant killing e.g. Stevenage v Everton

We always seem to get Prem or Championship sides in the FA Cup so when we got Preston I was ecstatic now we've got a Championship side away from home is not good if we can get past Forest I think we may be eyeing a decent cup run #KeepBelieving
