Hyam Out to Win Over Detractor Boys
Tuesday, 7th Jan 2014 19:22

Midfielder Luke Hyam says he’s determined to win over his detractors amongst the Town support. The 22-year-old was jeered by a section of the Blues support during the recent 1-1 draw with Watford.

“Obviously it’s not nice to hear but it’s all part and parcel of being a footballer,” the former Northgate High School pupil told the club site. “I’m a big boy and I can take it.

“I know that not everyone is going to like me. Football is all about opinions. It’s the manager’s opinion that is the main one but at the same time, I’d like to please the fans and win over all the supporters.

“Hopefully I can do that with my performances on the pitch. That’s what I’m aiming to do. We’ve got ourselves into the top six and I want to play my part in keeping that going.”

Meanwhile, Town have released details of ticketing for next Tuesday’s FA Cup third round replay at Preston.

Luke, you are playing at the top of your ability, there is nothing to be ashamed of, nor should you feel you should have to justify yourself.

Clearly you need to improve, and a lot, certain parts of your game to be a regular in a promotion challenging team.

I wouldn't worry, I'd have a beer and celebrate the fact that I've got in the team and am working my nuts off.

good luck to you.

Luke it's the very small minority the majority of fans are right behind you whether you play good, bad or indifferent

Luke just remember that goal you scored from about 30 yards at Walsham le Willows in a pre-season friendly. You have got that ability in your locker but for some reason you always seem to have your back to the opponents goal this season and pass back or sideways. That is never going to go down well with the fans. remember Leadbitter?!

I would like to see you play a more positive role, but we are not privy to what you are told to do. Keep working hard to improve.

Am not actually sure he was booed as suggested, it was more of a deep sigh at a dreadful pass. The fact is thou he hasn't been good enough and it does amaze me how he manages to get on the team sheet week in week out. Had he not have been a local lad I suspect he would be getting even more stick than he has experienced. All that said I support any Town player when they wear the shirt but he will need to improve his all round game before I'm happy to see his name on the team sheet.

Have to give Luke Hyam a lot of respect for this. He has obviously taken the jeers in his stride and has a brilliant approach in dealing with them. Great to see that he is not sulking about it or feeling sorry for himself. Well done Luke.

I hate hearing boos at Portman Road, they are just so unnecessary and do not help in any way. I could understand them more during poor performances under Jewell and Keane, but people need to stop and think before booing Mick McCarthy's sides. Absolute peanuts spent in comparison to the other two and look at where we are in the table in comparison!

I was really frustrated after the Charlton game in terms of the result and to concede late on...but what annoyed me more was to hear a few boos ringing around the ground. Whether these were aimed at the referee I do not know...but then again neither would McCarthy or the players! I would urge those who have a tendency to vent their frustrations in this way to just think first before doing so. After all, there is a lot to be positive about! COYB

I really do not like devisiveness amongst our great fans, but those of you who made Luke feel that he needed to release this statement should be ashamed. COYB.

Cloddyseedbed touched on it. We are not aware of what instructions Hyam is given.
Judging by the way he keeps getting selected I guess he must be doing as told which is a very defensive role. He makes Ray Wilkins look like Frank Lampard.

The fact is like it or not is that with Mick as manager he will look for the clean sheet or a point each match. Anything else is a bonus.
Not pretty to watch but evidently effective.

Luke, local lad and that is why you don't get more grief. Love the fact you try your backside off every minute of every game BUT no where near good enough for a top 6 championship team. You pass the ball backwards over 65% of the time. A central midfielder in this league has to create. You never do. I will support you because you play for my beloved club. Should you be in the starting XI if we are to progress? No way.... Sorry

What happened in the watford game was blown well out of proportion, no one booed him, it was just a collective groan at the break down of a very promising move down our left side. It was such a fundamental mistake, hence why fans got frustrated. The problem with luke is he is being asked to play a role that he is simply not capable of fulfilling. He is a defensive, holding midfielder and is not an attacking, creative midfielder people are wanting him to be. Mick seems to think he has a more attacking side to his game, to me at least this is not evident. People are also blinkered by fact he's a local, home grown boy. If he wasnt fans wouldnt give him as much patience. Also how many teams in the top 6 would he get in?? In my opinion he is not quite good enough to push us for promotion.

One dimensional football, breaks up the play very well but can not attack to save his life, if we sign a new midfielder he'll be the one to make way.

Matt Richards got broken by the boo boys, it was senseless & so are the groans about Hyam. I agree ask use & Hyam are too similar, we need a box to box goal scorer in the Holland/ Norris mould. But that's not ah yams fault, he always puts a shift in. If MM selects him, fans should back him. As MM says don't pi$$ on your own tent.

Top man Luke, I for one think you're a top defensive midfielder and I hope to see you in a town shirt, in the starting eleven for years to come.

Come on Luke. The majority of the Town fans back you mate. You make it sound like everyone hates you, which is absolutely NOT the case.
Hes one of our oooown, Lukey Hyam hes one of our own

Did anyone listen to Mick Mills during the last match (the man is a brilliant co-commentator). He was saying that as a midfielder, your first option should always be to look forwards. The backwards pass is only a last resort. Unfortunately for Luke, the backwards pass is his only resort. Mills was saying that in training matches, Hyam should only be allowed to pass forwards - anything else and it's a free kick to the opposition. I wonder if McCarthy has tried this?

I'm in agreement that he shouldn't be in the starting line up. He's a reasonable back up for Skuse and I have no problem with Hyam coming on for 30 mins to sure up the defense, especially away, but if Skuse is playing, Hyam definitely shouldn't be starting.

From what I can garner from the match commentary on iplayer, Hyam doesn't seem to have any consistency. He will play well and poorly in equal measure. He tends to pass sideways or backwards. He does however, throw himself about and loves the club. In an ideal world, every position would be filled by a local lad (someone like Hyam), unfortunately the world is cack, so we are stuck with Noubles instead of Marriots. However, that does leave us in sixth rather than in Skrill so let's just applaud everyone when they do something good and shut the hell up when they do something bad. It doesn't help anyone. Put it this way. If your manager has a go at you, you listen. If a colleague has a moan you listen but get annoyed. If a stranger has a go, you get angry. But if a few thousand boo you ... WHAT YOU SUDDENLY DO BETTER!!!

Your sentiments are right but no way is Luke Hyam playing to the best of his ability! I love him and certainly not one of the boo boys but I really think it's just a lack of confidence, something he won't get from his own fans abusing him! We only looked like a decent side last season when he was introduced into the side. If he can replicate that form then he could be the missing piece of our midfield.

People getting there knowledge from Mick Mills sould really think about packing up watching football. The bloke is either nail on the head right or controversially wrong, and 80% of the time, its the latter! If he knew what he was doing, he'd still be a manager.

1) Luke, there was no concerted booing directed at you, at least not where I was in the BR. 2) I have no qualms about giving our home-produced players a little extra consideration. 3) MM does not pick players based on sentiment. If a player is in the team, then it is because MM feels he deserves his place. 4) During the game, we should support everyone out there who puts on the blue shirt: encouragement generally brings better results than negativity. 5) If you want to make constructive criticism of a player's performance, do it after the match - i.e. in a forum such as this one. That's my take on the matter, anyway.
