Five First-Year Pros Released
Thursday, 20th Feb 2014 16:30

Town have told first-year pros David October, Mark Timlin, Jonny Leddy, Tom Winter and Jordan Adekunle that they will not be offered new contracts when their current terms are up at the end of the season.

October, Timlin, Leddy and Winter came through the academy, while Adekunle joined the club in the summer after a trial having impressed while playing for Crawley against the Blues in a pre-season friendly.

“It’s the worst week in my season, having to tell them and explain to them why we have to let them go,” manager Mick McCarthy told the club site.

“It’s for the good of them as much as anyone else. I’ve spoken to the academy staff, the U21s and TC.

"We’ve all had a say and we all agree. We’re not saying they are not going to be players. It’s just we believe it won’t be here.”

The quintet will continue to train with Town at Playford Road while they search for new clubs.

This news is not a surprise as they have been nowhere near the first team squad this season.

Anyway, I wish them all the best in their football futures, wherever it may be.

Weird really, bearing in mind mick was involving october and talking him up in pre season, plus why sign adekunle if he wasn't good enough?? Rumour has it we only signed him because he did well in a cameo sub appearance in pre season

This is sort of strange as I thought October was quite good . Just a very weird thing to do

What was the percentage of Academy players to be in the first team by 2016? Academy please note, I am immediately withdreawing my support from you, I might just reinstate it when we have a Manager who wants to create an Ipswich Town team with Ipswich Town players.

I saw October play a couple of times for Histon. He didn't shine nearly enough for me to think we'd offer him anything. Disappointing as I was impressed with him as a youth. I wish him (and the others) well.

Good to see the club being so decisive early on in the year. It gives us a chance to push other youngsters through and more of chance for those released to find opportunities elsewhere.

Sorry that it didnt work out for them but sadly if they are not good enough then they should be given a chance to find a more appropiate club.

I would rather there be players playing for Ipswich that came through the club but only if they are the best players in the squad. those that think we should play them just because they were academy players are absolutely living on another planet. with that approach we would be relegated by now!!

It must be a tough one for the management as players mature at differing rates, lets hope the academy starts producing soon though as we need to build a team based on their players to have any hope for the future, money is obviously a huge issue for the club.

Good luck lads, if you really want it..........you'll make it, but obviously not with Town.

Jordan Adekunle is a strange one as we signed him earlier in the season. Not too sure if his attitude was right anyway

Hard one to take, but hopefully these lads will prove Mick wrong and move on to bigger and better things. Best of luck in your future footballing careers lads.!!!!

Thought Leddy had fought back well after injury but just not given a chance..... Good luck for the future boys....

....... more purse string moves than anything else would be my prediction here - this Club, whatever noises are made by whoever, isn't a patch on what it was in terms of 'planning for the future' in so many, many ways.

Sad, and Sorry to say - but absolute fact.

...... Good Luck to all you lads - I'm sure you stand a good chance of making it - all be it not here, for whatever reason.

Tough one for Mick but he sees a whole load more of them then we do. The only slightly strange one is Adekunle as I'm sure I saw an article on here at the start of the season about Mick talking about him being closer to getting onto the bench than he first thought...

I confess that I haven't seen any of them play, but I thought that October, Winter and Leddy were supposed to be very promising.

I am getting worried by our use of free transfers/loans and our apparent inability to bring through our own youth.

This club is a very pale shaddow of its great days. There was a time when we could attract and bring through some very promising and talented footballers . Those days are long gone. I can assure these lads they will not be the only ones walking away from portman road at the end of the season.

good luck to these lads.
mick has no intrest in the academy and you will never know if they are good enough unless they are given a proper run in the side.
october is a decent young left back and given that nouble and tabb play for us you would think these lads would be ok!
i think we need a re-think on how we want are club to be managed as nouble is halting marriots rise to the first team and we have loaned out 2 good young full backs out to bring a 30 yr old in on loan-oh yeah and we have become a long ball team-id rather be in L1 playing proper football TBH
mick saved us from relegation with this style and thanks for that but in hindsight we should have parted company then because the way we are playing regadless of results is not how town should be

cant believe some of the comments made on here, when are people going to get up to date with the modern situation regards football, so many hark back to 15-20+ years ago about how we use to do this and that, facts are all clubs have to be ruthless in the ways they progress with youths, even in saying that like to know the % of players who come thru to those who get disposed of over the years now and back then, i bet its no higher then 2%..

ok so im a female supporter who you may think doesn't understand football, but football has been in my family for over 60 years with some family and relations who have been lucky to play professionally...

these lads might be decent enough at that level (Youth) but haven't got potential to step up, so move them on now and give them a chance to sort out their lives elsewhere....

move on, some of you get over it and lets support all the coaches and staff

muccletonjoe added 21:26 - Feb 20
KellysBlues - the modern situation regarding football is its 90% governed by money and there is really very little that is going to change that fact. Even if we had a manager who was inclined to give these lads a chance. The pressures of the modern game weigh very heavy on performances.

.... for anyone who gave me a minus and disagreed with my post - Where is the evidence that our Club is in any way comparable to how it once was in terms of young players coming thro' the system ???

You only have to look at the 'Under 21' results for proof of where we are in terms of youngsters , and indeed back up players.
Most of our youngsters over the past few seasons have all gone the way of David October,Timlin,Leddy, Winter, Adekunle etc; etc; - many, many, more have preceeded these lads in recent times.
If these lads had potential in the first place, MORE of them should be coming thro' instead of being released - if the 'system' is operated as it is portrayed.

No disrespect intended, but it is not saying too much if we cannot produce players with equal or better potential than Nouble for an example.

theobald1985 - .... the fact that you have accrued minus's for your post - proves we are right to not have too much confidence in the future of our beloved Club - or the direction it's obviously heading.

Too many people are blinkered, and never see, or want to see, the full picture.

a real shame about Jordan, I saw him play a couple of times for the U21s this season and at times he looked brilliant but at others, admittedly, he did look awful.

...... VERY unfortunately we can forget the strength of our future being about young players being nurtured (as it was in the succesful days) - this Club is, and will be, all about loans, free transfers, has beens, and never will be's.

Our current situation points directly to all these points - and who can argue (justifiably) with that ??
