Berra Nominated for Player of the Month
Thursday, 3rd Apr 2014 09:11

Town centre-half Christophe Berra has been nominated for the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month award for March.

The Scotland international is up against Watford’s Troy Deeney, Simon Francis of Bournemouth and QPR’s Ravel Morrison for the gong, with the winner announced on Friday morning.

Manager Mick McCarthy has regularly praised Berra, who joined the Blues on a free transfer following his release by Wolves last summer.

“If you start looking around for players of the season, he’s got to be up there,” McCarthy said after the 29-year-old scored in the 1-0 win at Yeovil. “He’s been magnificent. He’s a proper centre-half, Christophe.”

In addition to his consistently solid defensive displays, his two goals during March - the other was the last-gasp winner against Derby - took Berra's total for the campaign on to five, equal with his central defensive partner Tommy Smith.

Town striker David McGoldrick previously won September’s Championship Player of the Month award.

Well deserved nomination. Been outstanding for a while now and the hunger he showed to get to the ball to score the winner against Derby was just brilliant.

Whether we go up or not is to be seen(I honestly think we will) This season and a half under Mick has been nothing but amazing. He managed to get some of the best players in the Championship for nothing and has instilled a pride and bond between his staff and fans it has truly been amazing to see and cant remember such a goof fans squad realtionship since the days of George Burley. Good luch Christoph you deserve it!!!!

A bit of class, with Premiership experience.

Hard to buy. To get it for free is a big bonus.

Getting him on a free was an amazing deal , two or three more of similar ilk this summer please. Class player.

Given he broke up the successful Chambers / Smith partnership, has retained his place, been solid and netted 5 times as well as bringing Tommy on this season, he's my vote for Player of the Season.

...best rock we've had at the back since De Vos.

Excellent player deserves this accolade. Wonder where we'd be in the table if our 2 centre backs hadn't scored their 10 goals.

I really did not like this signing because it split up the Smith/Chambers centre half pairing but this season he has not bad one bad game, such a solid defender who commits fully to the challenge, outstanding.

Fully deserved too. Well done Christophe. I didn't think he'd be half as good a signing as he's turned out to be. Surely our Player Of The Year!

Deserved. For me he has been Micks best signing to date (closely followed by McGoldrick).

My player of the season and fully deserves this award too. Unfortunately, don't think he's gonna win it because it pretty much always goes to a forward and defenders get overlooked.

Quite simply, he has been berra than all the rest this season...

As long as the player of the month award isn't "cursed" like the manager of the month award!
Well done Christophe, most deserved.

Top bloke he is, Christophe. And also a great player.

Although I feel Tommy Smith desevers a bit of credit as well, he's been immense.

Terrific and well earned recognition. He is a real threat at set-pieces and both his goals were efforts that Daryl Murphy would have been proud to have scored.

I would also highlight Berra's bravery. In the Derby game, Chris Martin (amongst others) targeted him and spent much of the game - the first half in particular - kicking lumps out of him. Christoph stood up to this and it was to his great credit, and so fitting, that he should pop up with our winner at the end.

Don't think CB'S like Berra get enough praise for what they do, they do the same as strikers if not more so i think that this is well deserved and in my opinion berra is one of the best in the Championship... Well done Christophe, keep it up..
