Cresswell in PFA Team of the Year
Sunday, 27th Apr 2014 20:17

Town left-back Aaron Cresswell has been named in this season’s PFA Championship Team of the Year at this evening’s PFA Awards.

The 24-year-old, who manager Mick McCarthy believes is the best left-back in the division, is joint-top of the Championship assists table with 13 with Nottingham Forest's Andy Reid and has scored two goals during 2013/14.

Cresswell later tweeted: "Thanks for all the messages, buzzin' to be named in team of year!"

Earlier in the season, Cresswell was voted the ninth best player in the Championship at the Football League Awards.

Elsewhere, former Blue Gary Roberts, now with Chesterfield, who confirmed their promotion earlier today, was named in the PFA League Two Team of the Year.

PFA Championship Team of the Year: Schmeichel (Leicester), Trippier (Burnley), Cresswell (Ipswich), Morgan (Leicester), Shackell (Burnley), Drinkwater (Leicester), Reid (Nottingham Forest), Bryson (Derby), Hughes (Derby), Ings (Burnley), McCormack (Leeds).

Good team. How much would that lot cost?

Well done Aaron. Can't remember the last time we had a player in the PFA team of the year. Shows how much he is respected by his fellow pros.

First town player since Kelvin Davis in '05 I think. Well deserved, particularly up until Xmas.

Only player (other than Ross McCormack) to come from a team outside the current top 6. And QPR have no players there 😂😂😂

Nice one Cressy, I'm surprised though, thought it would be Stephen Ward

Sorry but the rest of the left backs in the division must be pretty poor.

Decent championship defender but that is all!

But if some idiot comes in with £4m then football really has gone crazy

I respect everyone's opinion, however I think you're being overly harsh. If you'd asked any manager in the Championship at the end of January who the best left back in the division was (no picking their own), I'm pretty confident 80% of them would say Aaron Cresswell.

Granted from February onwards he has been a little bit worse and hasn't hit the same standards. However has anyone noted that this coincided with the loss of Tunnicliffe and the installation of Hunt at left mid. With Tunnicliffe, Cresswell was able to overlap regularly and put in some excellent crosses. Stephen Hunt seems to wear blinkers the whole time - he gets the ball, head down, and runs until he loses it with rarely an end produce - how is Cressy supposed to overlap when a guy does that?

Also I don't think defensively he has let us down pretty much all season - he's always been solid. I think it's his lack of attacking effectiveness that's been much more noticeable, and his crosses have been poor, but that's because he's not able to get high enough to overlap and cross from the by-line.

As for the £4M comment...That's the market today. Football has been crazy for a long time. Like it or not that's how it is. For the sake of this example, if Jordan Rhodes is the best striker in this division and is worth £8M, them Cressy is certainly worth £4M. And if we get a decent left mid to play with him if he doesn't go, he'll soon be back to his best.

I see Connor Wickham scored again (twice) today ... finally scoring and getting regular games... after 3 years, but let that be a warning to all our good players that grass that isn't blue, isn't always greener.

Gota say i think these teams are picked based on reputation sometimes. Cresswell is the best left back in the division on his day but this is based on this seasons performances and for me he hasnt been anywhere near as good as last season.
Maybe its down to the players infront of him or the systems we've played or the thought of a move to the premiership playing on his mind but he just hasnt bombed on in the same way he used to therefore making him less effective.
Yes hes up there with the assists but most of them have been corners or free kicks.
Hes still done his job but in a tidy and unexciting way.

I would have put Forsyth just slightly ahead of Cresswell based on this season.

You can argue until you are blue in the face that Cresswell hasnt been his normal self since February but he was excellent again prior to this.

The fact of the matter is Cressy is defensively excellent every week (how often do teams get goals coming down his side?) and you just cannot overlook a player who is joint top on assists coming from left back. Well deserved award and i would be hard pressed to find any alternative players in each position from the team above!

Also, just think how many assists he may have got to had we suddenly decided he shouldn't be taking set pieces... He must be shanking them all over the shop in training or something because i cannot see why he doesnt take all of our attacking dead ball's. Very weird.

How can anyone argue over this?! Should be proud to have one of our players in there, most assists in the league for a left back and he's always solid defensively. Very few have had the better of him on the wing throughout his town career and this is voted for by the players who have played against him, I'm sure they have a much better insight than any of us do!

Let's hope it puts a few quid extra on him, Mick needs the cash and Mings is superb for me.

Funny old lot our fans sometimes!! Here we have a great achievement by 'one of our own players' who since he has been at the club and has been a near ever present
It is great we finally have a player in the PFA Team and some Ipswich 'fans' think maybe other players should have got it ! - un bloody believable
Well done Aaron and if this puts a few more quid on his selling price that is good for the club
Of course I hope he stays but realistically we can cash in and we need money to improve other areas
I think Leicester may come in for him

Despite their multi-million pound squad, there is not a QPR player in sight!
