McCarthy Prepared to Wait on Loans
Thursday, 12th Jun 2014 15:42

Boss Mick McCarthy expects to have to wait until late in the summer before Premier League youngsters are made available for loan. As was the case last year, Town’s summer business is likely to centre around the Bosman and loan markets.

“The players that will be involved in the World Cup will need a break so Premier League clubs will take all their best youngsters with them on tour and keep them through pre-season,” McCarthy explained to the club site.

“They will look at their young players and see if they are good enough to be involved next season, or whether they will benefit from going out on loan.

“There are definitely loan deals to be had with Premier League clubs and I don’t want to miss out on some of the good, exciting talent that could be available.

“Look at Jonny Williams and the impact he made here last season. How good would that be for us if we could get in a player of that standard on loan here?”

“It’s something that we are looking at and working towards, but it may require a bit of patience.”

The summer has got off to a quiet start with Town's only additions so far the signings of youngsters Darren McQueen and Ben Wyatt following their release by Tottenham and Norwich respectively.

Maybe if MM gave our own younger players a change then maybe they would also make the same sort of impact which Jonny Williams made.

@mattinLondon wow that was quick. First proper moan about something MM says.

How about the fact that MM has played Hyam, Mings, Marriott and Hewitt in the first team? Tommy Smith was also one of our younger players (not getting regular games) before MM established him as our CB. Sure, Marriott and Hewitt went out on loan - they needed first team football but the fact that we finished top half would suggest that MM not only got it right but also gave some of our up-and-coming boys a chance for some competitive ball rather than sitting on the bench.

Hmmm...said a few weeks ago I hope we don't miss out on any freebies for the sake of saving on a few weeks wages over the summer..not that long til the season starts now,i'd rather see us go and get what Mick wants now than risk losing them elsewhere for the sake of a few weeks extra salary.

Any news on our interest in Ward of Huddersfield?

Maybe if our young players are good enough they will make an impact. Case in point Luke Hyam- Town fans crucified PJ for not playing him and now after almost every game all I read about is rubbish he is and that he needs to be dropped. Perhaps some of readers are not as adept at player spotting as we would like? If we get a loanee that contributes as much as Jonniesta then i'll be happy.

Well thats it then! we can look forward to yet another season of doing just OK, i honestly believe that we are never now going to be serious contenders, ME spent what he had budgeted for for with the other two clowns who just wasted ME,s money!

If this pc will let me finish for christs sake before posting......

A new owner is now what is needed, someone who has the ability to spend, because that is what is needed to get out of this division, and then be able to stay up, without bouncing back in a season or two.... disappointed oh yes! i,m sure we shall see some bright new faces, but its gonna be kids again from the prem out for experience, and that is not what we need. So on to the new season and well yes i shall enjoy but sadly cannot see us anything but also rans!!

it seems that half the people here are moaning about not having players right here right now!! what is the matter there is a prospect of getting some amazing young talent from some of the top clubs in the premier league and people are moaning just because they want them now!! have you learnt nothing from last season and arsenals situation? got nobody during the window all up until the final day and got one of the most creative European midfielders at this moment in time in the shape of mesut ozil. all we need to have is patience and MM will do his magic as he did last year, just because we are not getting players right now does not mean we will have another medicore season ( i'm talking to you Karls_dad!!!!)> if we get a winger and a midfielder as good as Joniesta then we are in for an amazing season this year!! Edwards, Loach, SEB and possibly Hunt have all left the club, surely freeing up wages? These were all permanent players. I will be really disappointed if we dont sign a similar number of permanent players, topped up with two or three loans. Other clubs are signing permanent players. We need to do the same in order to be competitive.

I wish to apologise for my earlier remark - was having a very bad day at work and this story coincided with a very brief break.

I would suggest that you read my post again! i not stated i want players now, what i have said is that young loan players is not the answer, we need our own players! players that are contracted to the club and wear the shirt with pride, not a player that has a different shirt underneath!
Me is not by the look of things going to provide funds to buy, he has done that in the past and got burnt, lost millions! we have not got a good manager, we have a great one, probably the best in this division, but if he is not given the tools to do the job, well its obvious really!

If MM had the money that the Dark Lord and Jewellio wasted,,, I am sure we would have been flying high now !!!!! but we cannot turn the clock back,, so we must look to the future and see if we can do a Burnley job ???????

By the way Phil nice to see a different headliner...

...... agree with you jas0999.......... I know it's still reasonably early doors, BUT other Clubs are signing players up, and the new season is FAST approaching.

The Clubs that get off the mark sharpish in the close season in terms of signing players, and settling the squad before pre season friendlies - are generally the ones who reap the rewards.

At this moment in time we are WEAKER in terms of the squad, than we were at the close of last season.
Or have some maybe conveniently forgotten that ??

My guess is we will head into the new season - AGAIN - on a 'wing and a prayer' unfortunately.

How long are you lot going to harp on about the previous two managers wasting our owners cash. Think you will find it was mostly transfer kitty excluding the yearly ante MM provides. Perhaps we can blame Burley and the top flight cash that went south, ooh and Sheepshanks for gambling on ITV money.
The simple fact is unless we invest aka Leicester Forest QPR etc we have no chance. Fair play is a laugh when the Premier clubs come down with riches.
Bosman and a few loans ain't going to cut it, best we go for some of our youngsters with a prolonged period instead of the Hunts of this world.

We can't entirely rely on our own youngsters. When the opportunity arises getting a classy younger player who can improve the team and train with the younger players can both help the team and inspire the younger players to try and match (or beat) the standards of the player coming in. As long as the player is of good character coming in on loan can benefit the club behind the scenes as well as on the pitch.

Sorry but I am getting bored of this negativity. Reason is that we cant sign anyone and spend money is the corrupt fair play rules. How can teams that get relegated from the premier league and allowed to spend millions on players and current league teams have to rely on frees and loans. Marcus Evens could plough millions for Mick but the rules state we cant. It makes me angry that English football is only for big boys. Well get rid of those corrupt leaders and bring in a football league that is equal and if others cant spend millions then put a ban on high transfers??

Well there's a surprise that fills me with bags of confidence for the coming season suppose will have to see what is left in the bottom of the barrel maybe one or two walking wounded if we are lucky and another mid table season most likely .

I hear that there are a lot of class players out there with no clubs. Three who I'd sign in an instant are Freddy Adu, Cherno Samba and David Bentley. Just sayin

Town have already spoken to the respective PL Clubs regartding MM 's target young players . All he's saying is we will have to wiat to get hold of them due to the world cup. If some people on here havent learnt by now that MM does actually know what he's doing then its a sad day!

In Mick we trust

The fact that he is waiting on the couple of loans that he has allways said that he would like to bring in to bolster his squad, does not mean that he is not trying to bring in the out of contract players, that he needs to replace those that have departed. Does it?

If ever you were looking for an example of irony - just cite financial fair play!
Totally agree with you

Tearle1974, while I agree that the FFP rules put clubs like ours at a disadvantage, they were put in place to protect smaller clubs going out of business. The Football League comprises 72 clubs and the objective is to ensure that all teams can operate in a fair environment. Thus the impact of a Russian billionaire taking over a club eg Colchester, and ploughing hundreds of millions to rocket them to the Premiership is negated as this is deemed unfair to the other teams in the League who do not enjoy such bonanzas. True it is a fine line to follow because in any league there will be winners and losers, but the prescriptive solution adopted by the FL deems that clubs should, within reason, operate within their means. Many billionaire owners who 'invest' in their clubs do so though loans making them creditors come any judgement day which might come along. In other words the money they invest remains theirs and does not belong to the club. True, if things go pear shaped they may not get back what they invested, but the expectations they create demand expenditure which is unaffordable and a doomsday scenario arises. This is what the FL is desperate to avoid as if clubs go to the wall regularly it undermines the very essence of its structure and the legitimate competition it exists to provide. It might not feel like any kind of compensation right now but at least our owner is just that, with a majority equity stake in the club. We have a degree of stability in that should he get tired of it all he would need to find someone else to buy out his stake. Unless he was prepared to suffer a considerable financial ducking, and given the current optimistic outlook on the footballing front why should he, we should just be grateful that ME keeps our operational losses to a minimum in accordance withe FFP rules and provides the means to top up the day to day capital to ensure that we remain viable.
