McCarthy: Further Additions Likely to Be Loans
Monday, 25th Aug 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy will weigh up whether to further add to his squad, but says he’ll not be making any “major signings” before the transfer window closes a week today.

Asked whether he’s looking to add to his squad, McCarthy said: “We’ll see. But we’ll not be going out and making any major signings.

“We’ll probably assess it afterwards and if we have to use the loan window then that’s what we’ll do.”

The Blues boss says Premier League clubs will have been holding on to their youngsters: “They wait until after the first few games and then the international break comes.

“I think some have been keeping their younger players who are excess to their squads that they would normally loan out because of World Cup commitments and people who have played there and are not ready having come back.

“You might find that there will be a few more available that we can take, if we need to.”

McCarthy will similarly assess whether to make changes to his team for next week’s trip to Derby - who beat Fulham 5-1 on Saturday - over the course of the the next few days.

“I’ll see in the week,” he said. “It’s not like I’ve got a 30-man squad to be rotating to keep everybody happy. I’ll have a look.”

Meanwhile, Town's U21s start their their Professional Development League 2 South Division campaign against Swansea City at Playford Road this afternoon (KO 1pm).

The Blues' U21s coach Mark Kennedy was spotted watching Cambridge United's 2-1 home defeat to Morecambe in League Two on Saturday.

Not very encouraging talk from Mick here. I understand that he is operating under limited financial means, but the very reactive nature of this transfer policy is leaving us short in key areas & denying us the chance of bringing in the better options.
What happens when Premiership clubs decides they won't release the players that Mick has in mind after all, due to injuries, change in management or other factors outside his control? What is the 11th hour backup plan then I wonder? Another pair of uninspiring signings in the vain of Bru & Bajner perhaps.

Mick it was painfully obvious on saturday that workman like players will only get us so far. We desperately need some creativity in the side because too much emphasis is placed on doing the "dirty" jobs and we dont have enough players who are comfortable on the ball, who can retain posession and create chances. If Collison has added quality to training then sign him up!! Plus why send wordsworth on loan, he's 1 player in our squad who has quality on the ball, but doesn't run round like a headless chicken, thats why people seem to think you dont like creativity

It just gets worse. Anyone can see how painfully small this squad is and major signings is exactly what we need and frankly exactly what should have happened in the summer. Particularly after we cashed in on Cresswell. Where was that money spent? We have no quality (McGoldrick aside). If mick has to weigh up whether we need new additions there is something wrong. Clearly we need a replacement for Williams, plus another attack minded winger. Tabb and Anderson not good enough. In fact the midfield is so poor, you could argue it needs an overhaul, although clearly that won't happen.

Then the defence lacks cover, whilst I still don't think either Sammon or Murphy will score anywhere near enough goals to get us anywhere near the top 6.

With four players (assuming Nouble goes) leaving recently and just one in, the failure to replace last years three loanees, means we are so weak it is unreal. Can't Evans and McCarthy see it?

Also, what's the point of relying on 93 day loans, when currently we can get half season or full season loans. Means we will get to Christmas and the players won't be available ... Will we ever learn?! Can only assume it's part of Evans 'strategy'. What ever it is, it's very poor. Brighton have just spent a reported £1M on a player. We won't even get a half season loan!

Put simply we have no money! On Micks comments from Saturday I would agree that the first four games were going to be tough, however if we are serious about promotion we need to look at every game as if we can win it. I know I will get stick for this but I cant help feeling Mick hasn't got the same drive here as he did with his time at Wolves.

In other words. You are not getting money for transfers but we might run to an under 21 loan if the price is right. Are we really surprised we are struggling?

Jas0999 agree with everything you say. But no point signing midfielders with style Mick plays they won't touch the ball

I thought we were told that the Cressy money would be invested back into the team? i thought that meant signing new players, not paying loanes wages ? I dont understand football anymore its all so bloody complicated !

Can someone please shed some light on this Financial Fair Play bollocks? All I seem to understand is that we are the only ones operating in it. Or Evans is pocketing any money have just like Sheepshanks did. I'm just completely confused as to how we sell our best asset only to bring nothing in return. Everyone club in the championship has sold players & spent the money in replacements. Feeling totally confused & really let down as a fan at the moment. I renewed my season in good faith that something might happen, but once again it's the bargain basement we go again. Something has to give before either MM walks or gets turned on by the fans or Evans has to just go.

Very downbeat.

I have faith in Mick to turn this disappointing run around, as he did after a similar poor start last season.
He knows what we need and is operating within restricted means to build the best possible squad. I assume he wont use any of his budget to sign up collison/ambrose until he has properly evaluated players available for loan

Worried ..... Our bench is probably one of the weakest in the league, our first team choice lacks quality but we are not bringing any major signings in - we haven't built on last year we har ripped it apart! I can't see us getting anywhere above low end of middle of table! I'm sick to death of ffp when ever other team seems to be doing ok with transfers!!!! A club sadly lacking any drive or ambition (and I'm the eternal optimist usually with my rosey specks!)

This is very disapointing to hear, we are desperate for some quality in midfield. We've sold one of our best players and haven't spent a penny. That i wouldn't mind if we used the money to fund a season long loan for a quality premier league player. We should only use the emergancy loan window for emergencies, i.e We get injuries to several players in the same position. Whilst other squads are getting stronger ours is looking weaker. With this squad the best we can hope for is 10th, but given the competitive nature of this league it could well be a relegation battle.

Why are we letting players go out on loan when we are not signing any replacements it is rubbish. Where is the cresswell money is it sitting in a offshore account. Mick you must see the big picture we need players in. We see other teams sign players that have just came up and around us and we are not getting anyone

Have to say I am an MM fan, but I too am struggling. Its not really the results or the calibre of player that troubles me. We have come a long way from the dark days of Keane and Jewell and off the field things are slowly getting better. I accept we have no money. What troubles me is the TYPE of player MM is obsessed with, and the tactics he fits them into. We have no style, and there appears no desire to try to have any - players favoured are workhorses. I am also tired of MM's spin - that he appears to believe the performances are better than they actually are. MM says he loves it at Town because ME leaves him to get on with it. Perhaps ME needs to be a bit firmer with MM as gates are falling not rising - due to the dross being played.

I feel for Mick, the club are trying to do the right thing but certain circumstances are stopping us from building. Premier league clubs have the money to keep their youngsters on the pay role to train with their reserves, they do not have to let their fringe players go out on loan.

FFP is a joke for championship managers and the rules favour relegated clubs with huge parachute payments. With the FA still undecided on what sanctions will be put in place for clubs that break the rules, I think Mick is making the right choice in keeping the transfers light and using the loan market to bring in 2 or 3 players with a point to prove and can make a difference like Williams did for us last season.

Just my opinion but patience will be key for the next few windows.

...all this is getting me quite confused...we are speaking about the style of player that MM wants yet hasn't he brought in Stewart henshall and got Johnny in on loan last year????....what sort of players do you think he wants to bring in.???...too many unthought through comments!!

We are skint...see previous posts about ME and charging too much interest from loans....and with our current squad we may just have to face it that we are a mid table championship club......I have not written about Saturdays match as sadly I have said it all before and although frustrated was not surprised by the manner in which we lost...and the reasons(players) for it.

...however a hoolahan in midfield and an ability to pass forward would put us in much better shape.

...sadly not going to derby as a direct consequence of the last few results(3 losses and one draw....and 2000 miles)..leaving bury st eds today instead of staying on to watch what should have been a capital cup 2nd round against the s%#m and a very quick opportunity of getting local pride back....as previously said these first few games could set us back years....they are already meaning that supporters are drifting away ....I just hope that someone from the club reads some of the comments on here and actually does something about it.
This club is in my blood ...sadly it needs a transfusion before I do!!!!!

Come on do the maths. We lose approx 6mil every season, so where does the money come from?? Attendences? An extra 1000 on gate would give approx 1/2m, 1 player.

We are getting destroyed in midfield. Though valuable up front could McGoldrick play a deeper creative midfield role? With choice of Murphy, Sammon or Bajner up front. Would be worth it against Derby as we are going to get murdered there as well.

Why do people still slag off Sheepshanks? He presided over the most successful periods in the club's history. He had a terrific manager in George Burley who, like MM had no money. It was when Burley was given cash that it went wrong, with the notable exceptions of Marcus Stewart, john McGreal and David Johnson. The mistake was sacking GB - although Royle continued to play exciting football. Jim had his moments, and played some nice stuff. The rot set in with the arrival of Evans, unquestionably. A man at the helm with no football knowledge, making terrible managerial appointments and allowing the crazy sale of Jordan Rhodes. Yes we should be pleased that we're on a financial even keel thanks to Evans, but we're going nowhere. Tedious football, ludicrous ticket prices. It's a scandal that a derby was not sold out. I made a 300 mile round trip to watch that pathetic showing on Saturday. Others make far greater investments over the season. Is it asking too much for just say, a quarter of the Cresswell cash to be put back into the team? We will be down to crowds of 13,000 soon without some kind of spark. Fully support Stuart Watson's comments in the EADT. The club is at a real turning point.

Need to sign Collison and Ambrose ASAP. Need bodies immediately; we now have a smaller squad than last season.
