McCarthy: Tyrone's Doing Great Wednesday, 27th Aug 2014 06:00 Boss Mick McCarthy says he’s happy with the way left-back Tyrone Mings has settled into the season having taken over from Aaron Cresswell following his summer move to West Ham, even if the 21-year-old believes he could be doing better. Cresswell joined the Hammers in July for an initial £3.75 million with the fee potentially rising to £7 million after top-ups.
“Tyrone is a lovely kid and I think he thinks he could do better,” McCarthy said. “But I’ve said to him that you don’t replace a £4 million left-back with somebody we got from Chippenham for 10 grand or whatever it was and expect it just to be seamless, because it doesn’t happen.
“We lost a guy who had played [79 games] for Tranmere, a lot of football in the league, then came here and finished his education and now he’s gone on to West Ham, deservedly so. Ty’s in that first bit of his education and he’s doing great.”
Cresswell loved to push forward whenever he could and McCarthy wants to see Mings do the same when he gets the chance: “When there are opportunities on for full-backs to go, he can go. But he’s doing fine.
“He’s exciting when he’s going forward. I hope he doesn’t excite me at the back,” he joked. “I just like it to be boring and absolutely rock solid at the back, I don’t need any excitement, thank you.”
McCarthy is also pleased with the way Paul Anderson has begun the campaign, having benefited from being involved for most of pre-season this year after stop-start preparations last summer.
“Ando didn’t have a pre-season properly last year,” the Town boss recalled. “I think he was waiting for his move here to happen. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was still here at the start.
“No matter who you are, I think you get a little bit sidelined. We were trying to do that deal but when he eventually came and started he did great and I was so disappointed that he then got injured.
“He’s got better and better, Paul, I’ve been delighted with him. As a signing, he’s been terrific.”
Elsewhere, McCarthy is now 10-1 to be the next Crystal Palace manager with some bookies.
However, former Eagles boss Neil Warnock is widely quoted as an odds-on favourite to return to Selhurst Park, while Steve Clarke and Neil Lennon are ahead of McCarthy, who signed a new three-year deal with Town last month.

I, like coutless others were very disapointed with Saturday's performance. I though (perhaps with rose-tinted specks), on reflection, really truly believe that was a watershed performance and was a total & utter sanity check for MM/TC as to the current significant deficiencies in our team, especially our non-scoring/defensive midfielders. To me, we only need 4 very simple changes: 1. A significantly better, much more relaible goalkeeper - Gerken regularly cost us points last season & he is doing exactly the same this season (simply compare Gerken stand on his line, hesitancy, to Ruddy's total dominence of his box on Saturday, nuff said). 2. Replace Skuse with a quality visionary, forward passing, midfielder - I dream of a Johny Williams type...who can also score 5 to 10 goals a season. 3. Please pick fast & able wingers - Henshall & (when fit) Stewart....who will also chip in with 5+ goals each a season. 4. Spend some of Cresswell's money, as we still need another 15+ goals Striker - we cant simply rely on Didzy & Murph alone up front, & them remaianing fit for the whole season. 2.

Cookycrew. Agreed. You could add to that using a proper Right Back. It's difficult to understand MM's patience with Skuse and Gerken.

So Palace are too shrewd to appoint a dinosaur as boss then Blueboy? Is that why they're on the verge of appointing Neil Warnock!!! LMFAO

I also like Mings and think he has done really well. But he is not a left back, just as Chambers isn't a right back. Both are central defenders. Trouble is we have lost Cresswells creativity. Mick might not want Mings to push forward, but sadly having wing backs who don't move forward, adds to the lack of creativity and boredom. Really looks like mick has adopted a don't concede and hope we nick a goal. Dull.

I really like Tyrone, one of the few players who has really stepped it up this season.

For Christ's sake put Berra and Chambers as our centre backs. Until we get that right it's all to cock.

Yeah Ty has been doing ok, he does alot of good things but that's only because he puts himself in situations where he has to make up for his mistake, You dont see chambers making heroic saving tackles because he doesnt make mistakes in thr first place. I would personally rather see Parr start left back, you don't sign a left back as good as him and put him on the bench. Ty is still young and has alot to learn, his positioning seriously needs work! Parr is already the finished article and is one of the championships best left backs. He has to start.

The formation doesn't matter to a certain extent. If you play both Skuse and Hyam then you have to play hoofball because there is no outlet ball provider in the middle of the park. Playing them both is McCarthy's choice and it is a completely defensive set-up. I'm bored of it and it won't succeed in taking us up anyway so why bother?

Mings has got a lot of quality attributes and as a defender he's got so much time to improve and he will. I'm probably about to give up of logging on here over the next week and finding that we have signed someone in midfield! That is the area we should all be talking about. Left back is a position we are well stocked.

With Warnock going back to Palace we can forget seeing Williams here any time soon. I'm just hoping all this apparent lethargy on behalf of our management is just that and we get some quality in soon. Luke Powell from Man U perhaps?

So does that mean mings is gonna go out on loan now lol .so we got 3.75 milo and seen nothing on players yet . I am still upset about Saturday what is tabb doing in the team.

Cookycrew, I agree with what you have said on the whole, however, in reference to your second point. Why should we worry about getting a new attacking midfielder on loan, all Mick has to do is look at Rotherham. They have two players who could fill the role. Wordsworth and Taylor. Oh wait, they are our players!!!!

Just as a building needs solid foundations, so does a footballer. The basics are control, passing, and movement. If you can't do them, you can't really call yourself a footballer.

Seems to me, managers and coaches these days seem more concerned that players can round around like headless chickens for ninety minutes. It just needs good basic coaching!

If we use a 3-5-2, has to be Ando and Henshall or Stewart. Collisin, Hyam, then McGoldrick behind Murphy and Bajner. IF, though

Noel and Surco. I admit that Mick obviously hasn't been perfect while he's been here. Of course he can coach players to play a passing game. However, to me I feel that some of these players aren't suited/not high on confidence to play the beautiful game. And up until now, Mick's method may have not been pretty, but it has produced him with more results than failings. And yeah this is "Micks Team" of players but he hasn't exactly had a big short list of players to choose from due to the lack of money he's had? He's often had to take some of these players due to us having very little other options. Overall however, football is an entertainment and results spectacle. In the perfect world, we'd play attractive football and get the results too. And while I would love that we get both of these things, we don't have the resources to do both right now. I completely agree though that a change is needed. Maybe a 3-5-2 can work. I just don't think Mick leaving would be a good thing for us right now.

3-5-2 is obvious only because the back 4 currently contains 3 CBs. Apart from this fact we do not have players who could do the WB job effectively. You would either need wingers who could defend or FBs who could bomb forward to supplement MF in the advanced areas and also get even further forward to provide crosses for the strikers. This is a very physically demanding role and even at the top level ie the World Cup WBs kept being caught out of position when they should have been defending. Furthermore 3 at the back does not necessarily require 3 CBs. Opposing teams often play only 1 up front with the result that the back 3 need to be more flexible when it comes to marking/covering. Thus a back 3 might be just 1 CB with 2 FBs; the MF 5 might comprise 1 holding MF, 2 regular wingers and 2 creative MFs to control the game. Such a structure can accommodate a degree of tinkering but generally would not suit the players we currently have at our disposal.

Ipswich26, We do have the players to play good football. A certain John Lyall took over here with a very average squad of players, but within 2 seasons had won division2 (championship) playing a superb blend of attractive attacking football. Those players were coached to play that way, round pegs were put in round holes, the club had bugger all money to spend then either, but it goes to show what can be achieved without resorting to route one stuff most of the time.

PinewoodBlueBoy - it's a good point and overall it's an interesting debate to have. It may be one that a lot of us fans have while MM is the manager. Lets just hope something changes for the better.
