Town Topic: The Greatest Derbies
Wednesday, 6th May 2015 10:08

With Town facing Norwich City at Portman Road on Saturday in the first of what are perhaps the two biggest East Anglian derbies ever, we thought it was time to look back at the greatest Blues-Canaries clashes of the past.

What are your favourite memories of previous derbies? Which were the greatest goals? Which victories were the sweetest?

Post your memories/YouTube videos in the Comments section below.

Florida, I was there too on the carrot field, and for everyone else, believe me when I say there has been nothing better than lifting a cup on the middle of carrot road, ha ha ha, it was effing awesome. fans and players, Sir Bobby, everyone just absolutely bonkers running riot in front of those six toed bumpkins. It kick started the glory years. It was special.

Texaco Cup 42 years ago! We beat them 4-2 over two legs with 2 Portman Rd goals from Peter Morris and one each from Whymark and Woods at their strange ground. Brillaint and an important piece of silverware at the time.

It has to be the only one I was actually at - the 5-0 smash and grab. Missed Mathie's 1st as the person in front of me leapt to his feet before the ball went in. Mostly remember Petta's goal as he wriggled his way through the Nodge defence like a hot knife through butter.

Philwhelansdegree, that town fan on the pitch was the infamous Tony Swallow, Jason Dozells half brother (?). I was at that match. Remember stopping at the White Harr (now closed) on the A140 for a quick pint on the way home. Tasted sweet. We'd been out of the top tier for some time and beat them on our return as I recall. Scum finished third in Premier League that season too :)

The next win will be the greatest derby moment

My 2-0 win on football manager last night. A deflected Gary Roberts free kick and a billy Clarke 1v1 when they had to chase the game. In real life the 5-0. Sat in front of a corporate box in the cobbold containing a young kid in a Norwich shirt. Poor little guy was in tears by half time. Almost felt sorry for him.

Loved the 5-0. Mathie scoring after 64 seconds, at which point I accidentally smacked my best mate in the mouth whilst celebrating. They were hilariously awful that day, even Mike Walker predicted we'd do them by five or six the previous week.

And the Gunn incident. Absolute comedy gold.

The 2-1 win with the beatuful Ullathorne O.G./Bryan Gunn air-kick winner which I saw bobble in from the Churchmans End (about the only attack we had in the 2nd half from what I remember) in '96 and the 'Destruction Derby' 5-0 in '98... The only 2 derbies I manage to attend before leaving Ipswich so I may be biased, but I reckon they both must figure in most people's top 5!

Milk Cup semi-final, first leg at Portman Road, 1985 (?) 27,000 in attendance, crammed in, Mich D'Avray with the header - mental.

Second leg doesn't bear thinking about . . .

legendofthephoenix, you've described that night much better than me. for an early 70s small time cup final our blue army mob of fans celebrated as good as those european prima donnas of modern times !! thats the only time in my life that i got to hug/congratulate bobby robson, cyril lea and some of the players out on the pitch. close on 35,000 inside carrot rd and probably 10,000 plus town fans arrived on the night! one of my favourite away day memories ever!

Having watched those antique YouTube clips, I have to conclude that the pitches were terrible in the old days, and the Norwich defence must have been taking bribes...

Love this story, and I hope mick is reading it to remind him that WE are the bigger team here. None of this underdog rubbish. I want to see us go at them early on, otherwise we're putting even more pressure on our fragile confidence.

For me: 5-0 was the most complete, 2-1 Bryan Gunn the funniest, but that 2-0 Friday night game the best performance. If take that again Saturday!

Does anyone know how I can get hold of any more of those season reviews? There's a couple kicking around on YouTube, but I was hoping a load more from the club shop or something, but there doesn't appear to be any on there...
