Blues Targeting Former Millwall Skipper
Saturday, 6th Jun 2015 09:40

Town boss Mick McCarthy is understood to be targeting released Millwall skipper Alan Dunne. The versatile 32-year-old left the Den last month having been with the Lions since he was eight.

The Blues are believed to be in talks with the Dubliner, who can play at right-back, centre-half or in midfield.

Dunne progressed through the Millwall academy - having initially joined the club's youth set-up during McCarthy's time as manager - and into the first team, making his senior debut in March 2002.

The 5ft 10in tall defender went on to make 348 starts and 40 sub appearances for Millwall, scoring 23 goals, before his release at the end of the season.

Dunne, who was linked with Celtic earlier in the year, was named Millwall’s Player of the Year during the 2009/10 season in which they won promotion from League One via the play-offs.

In July 2011 he was given a testimonial match in which the Lions defeated Charlton 4-3 at the Den.

Another right-back is likely to be one of McCarthy's primary targets this summer with Elliott Hewitt having been released and with Jonny Parr increasingly having been used in midfield during 2014/15.

Would prefer us to be targeting a better quality, more long-term solution to play right back. Wouldn't be against him joining as a useful back-up player though.

Agree with theman. Would be okay, but certainly no better than we already have. Fits the bill though as he's free and probably not on large wage. Would be an okay addition as a squad player, but was hoping for better quality. Other clubs already being linked to million pound signings. Appreciate we can't, but I am expecting to see fee signings this summer. We have to to compete.look what Sears has achieved for a modest fee.

We have limited experienced cover for those defensive positions. Id say this would be a good signing.

No thanks. If we are going to push on from last season we need to be signing QUALITY, not quantity.

I suppose we'd better get used to this

Whoever McCarthy wants I hope we get, but clearly a 32 year old released by Millwall isn't likely to excite fans too much. We already have Parr as a versatile defender who can play in midfield, and with four centre backs I don't see a need for more cover there.

We need to really add some midfield quality (and goals) if we are serious about pushing on and going for promotion next season.

Stearman for right back please.

We NEED a specialist right back. We haven't had one during the last 3 managers for some bizarre reason.

Mmmm a 32 year old. Not jumping up and down if this happened.

This doesn't excite me at all! Andy Wilkinson would be a good shout from Stoke! Released on a free a solid experienced premiership RB, granted he's not your Mings type full bank bombing up and down the wing but nor is Chambers. Might be worth a look!

Why are we even considering this? We already have two excellent young prospects in Hammond and Emmanuel. Both able to step up given the chance and both training with the first team squad towards the end of the last season. I would suggest that this article is pure nonsense.

Mick would rather keep playing Chambers out of position than sign another journeyman pro as a right back.

I'll go with Mick over the doom and gloom merchants.

Did N.Hunt excite? I remember the fits when Chaplow and Varney joined.

I remember people getting wood for Wood too.........

In Mick I trust.

Not yet read the comments but expecting the normal "he's rubbish" "if he's not good enough for Millwall he's not good enough for us" responses!
On the whole Mick's transfer business here has been successful so I for one will back his knowledge & know how

Think we should be recriuting players in their early to mid 20s from leagues 1 & 2 with potential and sell on value rather than 30+ players who probably won't be anywhere near good enough for the Championship let alone Premiership.

As decent as some of the 30+ journeymen can be in small doses I for one am tired of seeing us filling our squad with injury prone players ala the Hunts,Ambrose,Chaplow,Varneys of this world.

We need to start looking at younger, hungrier talent plus we need to start putting a little more faith in some of our own youth players..give them more of a chance Mick.

Good player, genuine right back, well worth a punt on a free transfer, on a 2 year deal.
As @stinkius said above, we haven't played a full back at right full for years and I believe it has been a costly error for us.
It's all well & good saying that we have a couple of promising lads coming through, but next season is really important for us if we are to build on the achevements of the season just gone. We have to be looking at making the playoffs at least, with a real push for automatic promotion. If young players break into the team, like Mings & Bishop did, that 's great, but it would be unprofessional to expect it of them, without other options.
Most posters seem to agree that we should not be starting next season with Chambo as our right back. I would be happy with having Dunne there for us. From what I hear from knowledgeable people I've asked, he is a solid, dependable, experienced, hard-working, tidy player, who has been doing it for years at an unfashionable club without the recognition he deserves at Championship level. He also has great organisational ability. These all sound like qualities Mick loves and he knows him from his own days at Millwall.
I think it's a good shout.
At 32 he still has a good 3 years in him. His game hasn't been based on pace, nor has he been dogged withy injury. He might be the perfect role model for the young lads coming through.

.......... released by Millwall !!!! ...... therefore surely good enough for us ... ok, if you must.

I've said it before - some people are, and will be, happy with anything and everything - that's why we've probably found our level right now.

Andy Wilkinson plays rightback and is on a free having been released by stoke. Very experienced defender at Premiership level. Might be worth a shout.
