Town Draw Doncaster Away
Thursday, 13th Aug 2015 22:39

Town have drawn League One Doncaster Rovers away in the second round of the Capital One Cup.

Doncaster beat 10-man Leeds 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at home in this evening's live Sky game.

Ex-Blues loanee Richie Wellens netted the decisive spot-kick, while another one-time Town loan player, striker Chris Wood, was amongst those to miss for the Whites.

The Blues and Doncaster last met in the competition at the same stage in the 2004/05 season when the South Yorkshiremen won 2-0 at their former home Belle Vue with Ricky Ravenhill and Jermaine McSporran on the scoresheet.

Town's last visit to their current ground, the Keepmoat Stadium, was on Boxing Day 2013 when they ran out 3-0 victors - David McGoldrick (2) and Luke Chambers - with Rovers on their way to relegation from the Championship.

In the following April the Blues completed the double by recording a 2-1 win at Portman Road. Daryl Murphy and skipper Chambers scored for Town either side of Chris Brown's penalty for Doncaster.

In addition to Wellens, midfielder Richard Chaplow joined Rovers following his release by the Blues last summer.

Second round ties will be played in the week commencing 24th August.

Very boring. Away and a long trip. A stadium we've visited numerous times. A team that is capable of beating our second string. Very dull draw all in all and one of the toughest teams we could have faced.

Well, if it goes to penalties, at least our keepers know where the Doncasterplayers place them.

Will be a tough game away against a good league one side who is definitely capable of beating our second team. Will be a very good game though

After a rare home tie, normal service is resumed in the Capital One cup.

Could be an interesting trip up the A1 that night with the scum family bus outing going to Rotherham!

About the worst possible draw we could get. Guaranteed 0-0 bore with a loss on penalties!!

Not ideal for the boys in terms of travelling, but it's perfect for me so I'll be there!

Confidently predict we'll win this and move on to the serious stuff in the third round

ArnieM: you beat me to it. I had the same thought. However, could be a fun trip back if we win and the Scummers lose.

Well that's the end of our cup run then!

Just thought of it, it could have been tougher. Had Leeds won on penalties, we would have been drawn away to Brighton with the same number on the ball as Doncaster had.

Thoroughly underwhelming draw. Long trip, small gate so not much cash reward. Car parking a nightmare. A travelling nightmare coming back from Preston on the Saturday then back up to Doncaster midweek. There is also the possibility that we could lose if we put our second 11 out against their strongest 11. On the plus side we have done well there after the 2004/5 debacle at their old Belle Vue ground - I was there and we were terrible but we are a different proposition now.

oh dear!...just the sort of game against lower league opposition which will see us off (hope I'm wrong).

I'm not bothered that it is a 'boring' draw or a bad ground or a long trip. It is a chance to get through to the next round and make further progress in this competition. And that is great!
