McCarthy: Brett's Even Better Than I Thought
Wednesday, 9th Sep 2015 08:47

Boss Mick McCarthy is delighted with the start Brett Pitman has made to his Blues career and says the striker is an even better player than he thought he was when he signed him in the summer.

The 27-year-old joined Town from AFC Bournemouth on a free transfer and has scored two goals in four starts and two sub appearances so far this season.

“Brett’s excellent, I’m really pleased with him,” McCarthy said. “I’ve told him myself, he’s better than I thought he was.

“I always thought he was a good player, I wouldn’t have entered into discussions about signing him otherwise.”

It was McCarthy’s enquiry regarding Pitman’s availability which started the talks which ultimately led to Tyrone Mings joining the Cherries for a fee of £8 million with Ryan Fraser moving to the Blues on loan for the season.

“When I rang Eddie Howe and asked if he was available that started the ball rolling with the whole Tyrone Mings deal," he added. "I asked him about Ryan Fraser as well at the time.

“That started the ball rolling on that deal and I was delighted when we got him. But I’m even happier still when he’s trained with us because he’s a better player than I thought he was. And a great character, a lovely fella.”

Brett was certainly a bit of a Coup... 4 strikers with 20+ this season? Would be impolite not to

Think we certainly got the better end of the Mings/Pitman deal.

We are blessed with strikers this season..can't say i'd swap our main 4 with any from the lower half prem teams.

I have been a huge critic of MM & some of his transfer dealings but his signings have been top quality this pre-season & I think we got an exceptional deal with Brett Pitman & Ryan Fraser coming to PR, so good that at one time I wondered if we were going to sell Murphy. I think we have stepped up a gear in the quality of players rather than taking players at the end of their careers & we still have the option on Luke Varney who certainly fitted in exceptionally well before his terrible injury. Do hope Tyrone makes a full recovery, he must be devastated.

Braveblue. How was he awful against Brighton. The strikers couldn't be criticised that day as they got absolutely no service whatsoever. And even if he had been u can't judge a player on 1 performance neway.

Those mentioning the Brighton game.. think back to Burnley at home. Murphy hadn't won anything in the air for 45 mins, Pitman came on at half time and won every header second half.
Does this mean Murphy is a terrible player? no. Had an off night (and an injury) but for me Pitman helped change the game for us.
As other have said, we are blessed with 4 very good strikers this season!

Very pleased to have got Pitman on a free and Fraser on loan, and by-the-way Brett set up our first goal v. Brighton while trying to score himself. This does underline once again, that their signings and Mings' sale were entirely separate, one did not depend on the other. However, I suspect that the club always planned to sell one player this summer for big money just as they did a year ago - perhaps they expected it to be Murphy, hence the interest in signing another striker.

My goodness it is getting crazy on here. A small criticism and all hell breaks loose!! Pitman hardly won a ball against Brighton. He did not set up Sears. He missed and Sears got the rebound. My point was not that he is a bad player. He had a bad game and I am just amazed at Mick's comments given his last performance. Calm down!!

I really rate Pitman as a player, but as I said in my post match comments, he wasn't at the races after getting heavily clattered early on. Brighton did a job on him basically.

Good management from Mick. He often uses his press comments to build the confidence of players that have suffered a knock back or are getting stick from the fans. Which is probably why we were always hearing about Fantastic Tabby ;-)

" Braveblue" I don't think pitman could see much after the clattering he received early on and afterwards(perhaps Brighton are the new cynical Watford!?) but give the guy credit for the shift he put in when not on the ball which is always missed by those with blinkers on!!!! he is a great addition to our squad and still settling in so give the guy a break!! his signing has helped in the fact that Murphy was not fit at the start of the season after his efforts(at 32) last year and due to international call ups and not enough rest!!

I understand from the Bournemouth FC website that Tyrone Mings is out for the next nine months due to ligament damage. That is nothing for us to celebrate; quite the reverse, as he is a very promising England player. What we should rejoice in is that we have picked up a couple of very decent footballers who could get us promotion.

I live in Poole so get the Bournemouth Echo - people here (me included) were gutted when he first got injured after 6 minutes on the pitch as a sub, then gutted that it would be three months, then totally gutted when it was a season!

Noone is pleased about this - if we are honest we are only relieved that it is not OUR season that is affected by it - I know that is selfish, but if it is a team we support, then that is the relief for us ... and the burden for AFCB

But I'm both gutted for Tyrone AND delighted FOR HIM - whilst gutted he will miss his dream season, I am delighted that he is held in such high regard and they feel that he will earn his fee that has helped us here so much and given us such options.

Also - I think he will be playing in the Premier league with them next year. And if we keep playing like we are ... including with Pitman who was also rated very highly down here ... then we will be playing them twice next year as well.

I'd love to see what Pitman (and the rest of our squad!) can do in the top flight - if they want to see it as much as we do, then they will play out of their skins to make it happen ... it can happen... we have the squad and the gifted players within to make it happen ... and the management to bring out the best in that squad - with all the right encouragements along the way like this article!
