McCarthy Changes Entire XI at Old Trafford
Wednesday, 23rd Sep 2015 19:10

Town boss Mick McCarthy has changed his entire XI for this evening’s Capital One Cup third round tie against Manchester United.

McCarthy had indicated that he planned to field a much-changed side with Saturday’s Championship game at home to Bristol City his priority.

Bartosz Bialkowski is in goal with Jonny Parr making his first start of the season at left-back and Josh Emmanuel at right-back

Recent signing Piotr Malarczyk makes his full Town debut at the centre of the defence alongside Josh Yorwerth.

In midfield, Kevin Bru partners Giles Coke in the centre with Jay Tabb on the left and Tommy Oar making his Town debut on the right. Daryl Murphy, who skippers, and David McGoldrick are up front.

There is no Dean Gerken on the bench with the keeper having suffered ankle and groin injuries during Friday’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham.

In contrast to Town’s side, Manchester United name a very strong line-up including Wayne Rooney, Bastian Schweinsteiger, David de Gea and Juan Mata, although recent signing Anthony Martial is on the bench.

Manchester United: De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Blind, Young, Schweinsteiger, Herrera, Mata, Fellaini, Pereira, Rooney. Subs: Romero, Darmian, Jones, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Memphis, Martial.

Town: Bialkowski, Emmanuel, Parr, Malarczyk, Yorwerth, Coke, Bru, Oar, Tabb, Murphy, McGoldrick. Subs: Chambers, Maitland-Niles, Pitman, Sears, Kenlock, Crowe, Touré. Referee: Simon Hooper (Wiltshire).

Virtually nullifies all reasonable chance of an upset I guess - hope I'm wrong, but not expecting much from this now.

Not so sure it's terribly fair on some of the inexperienced players either to be honest.

I'm not really much a Mick fan but think he has got that team selection 100% right.

Keep it tight for 45 and whack on the pace after 60 if we're still in it.
Good luck, lads. Enjoy yourselves!

How can a back four that have never played together expected to keep out Manchester United?!
Just hope we score now.

This is a team picked with Bristol in mind

........ if they should go there and get a result - every single player deserves to stay in the team for the next game.

Such is the magnitude of the task they now face.

Hector c .... I think the phrase "Murphy, who skippers" sort of gives you a clue

To be fair, aside from our inexperienced back line (Parr aside) the rest of the team looks decent. If we do not concede too early then you never know....

If Bart keeps the scoreline reasonable tonight he must keep his place...surely?!?

We are going to get hammered with that defence. A defence that's never played together against that quality opposition. It'll be 5-0 within 30 minutes. Why, at least, you don't throw in someone like Chambers or Berra alongside Marlarczyk Christ knows?? We played Yorwerth and Emmanuel against Colchester United and we looked dreadful...

I fear for us tonight. Hope it's not lambs to the slaughter.

Youth and desire will only take you so far against a line up of that magnitude (and Rooney itching to get back into goal scoring ways); fair enough to focus on the league but to set up a potential battering of our young'uns confidence (let alone the score) does worry me a tad

Man Utd First team vs Ipswich Reserves. If we win by any means it will be the result of a lifetime, haha. To be honest if we aren't trounced it will be a good day.

Some of the commentators above don't exactly seem to be fans of the "In Mick We Trust" motto ...
