Owls Among Clubs Eyeing McGoldrick
Tuesday, 21st Jun 2016 17:45

Sheffield Wednesday are among a number of Championship and Premier League sides keen on Blues striker David McGoldrick.

Although we understand no club is imminently expected to make a move for the 28-year-old, Wednesday, with whom McGoldrick was briefly on loan in 2011, and several other clubs are interested and are set to monitor the Republic of Ireland international’s progress in pre-season and during the early weeks of 2016/17 before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

The ex-Nottingham Forest and Southampton man returned to action in the final weeks of last season after a long spell out with hamstring problem and scored two goals in the Blues' last two games, having also spent significant time on the sidelines through injury during the previous two campaigns.

He subsequently joined up with the provisional Republic of Ireland squad ahead of the European Championships but was left out of the final 23.

McGoldrick, among the top earners at Portman Road, probably the highest, is contracted until the summer of 2018 and Town are likely to want a significant fee for the Nottingham-born frontman, although his valuation won't be anywhere near the £7 million they turned down from Leicester in the summer of 2014.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield have confirmed that midfielder Jack Payne will be joining them on July 1st following his Southend exit.

Town were one of several Championship clubs to have been eyeing the 21-year-old, however, we understand the Blues never got as far as offering the player terms or discussing compensation with the Shrimpers.

Elsewhere, ex-Town striker Marcus Bent pleaded guilty to one count of possessing cocaine at Wimbledon Magistrates Court this morning and was fined £385 with £85 costs, having been arrested at Chessington World of Adventures yesterday.

In February, Bent was handed a 12-month jail term suspended for two years, ordered to pay a total of £2,600 in compensation, court fees and victims' surcharge, given 200 hours of community service and a two-month night-time curfew at Guildford Crown Court, having previously pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine and affray.

Highly unlikely having bemoaned his absence for so much of last season that we now let him go to a team that spent most of the past 12 months as our biggest rivals for the top six. Ca't see that happening.

If Troy Deeney is worth 25-30 million mcgoldrick is still worth 7!!!! The world has gone mad! I for one wouldn't like to see us sell mcgoldrick even with all his injury problems.. He is a class act at this level on his day.. However every player has a price and he had intentions of leaving a few years ago so isn't the most loyal.. I just hope that IF these rumours are true we are not our usual soft selfs and make the clubs interested pay a large fee to secure his services as he will be very hard to replace!

In a rare media interview given towards the end of last season the player stated he was concentrating on kick starting his Town career and not looking to move anywhere.

We will have to wait and see but as we all know, money talks...

Personally, I would be sad to see him depart as he could be a stand out player again, IF he can just stay clear of injury. That's a big IF given his history in the past three seasons.

Although I hope we don't sell, I wouldn't be surprised if Evans cashes in. He has spent a rumoured £750K this pre season and I suspect ME will want to balance the books and a quality albeit very injury prone player is likely a candidate. Bishop, Sears, Smith and potentially Murphy are our only other players worth decent money.

Personally if a decent replacement lined up then I'd let him go, any any kind of decent money could be used to drastically improve the current workman like squad, for me I'd prefer to watch a young improving hungry team then watching the dross currently on offer!Granted he is a class act in this league, but his injury record over the last 2 years is dreadful and for me that's the main reason. He would normally be one to keep, but cannot rely on him. Marcus Bent =🛎End

Interesting, as I'm sure there are lots of fans who with hindsight would rather he had gone to Leicester for a decent fee 2 years ago.

Got himself fit and able to play a few games before the end of the season, to put himself in the shop window again.

He knows full well that his talent will be wasted somewhat in any MM team.

If he goes to an attacking, entertaining team - just watch him perform .... !!! He has the class to do so, and will.

I'm with Jimmy Jazz....injury prone lightweight striker, if we could get good money, let him go and get in a proven striker from a lower league with something to prove like Johnny Walters.

Following the dross football served up last season makes good reading early close season to potentially sell one of your best players, injury prone or not. Our track record of reinvesting on decent replacements following a good fee isn't good.
Why doesn't anyone come in for Mick I think I can work that one out!

Big McGoldrick fan. He's class, however he's also... made of glass.

Can we guarantee he'll be fit all season? Sadly not.

I'd take anything north of £3.5 mill - he's also a top earner so would free up wages for some other signings.

Dyer going all them years ago did help many in - different situation I know but I would trust Mick to get a good striker in should he go.

Mediocre player, limited ability and can't score using his head as can't jump,
his goals are mostly from the edge of the box so he doesn't even rank as a goal poacher.
A maxim of 10-12 goals a season if he's FIT

Surprised to find myself saying this, but if we can get a fair price I think we should sell and move on. McG is undoubtedly talented, but we haven't got a lot of mileage out of him since he's been with us.

Does he leave or does he remain?

A classy, intelligent player, but I can see him being moved on if the price is right. Sadly he is injury prone and the club is skint. Other clubs know this so I'm expecting offers of maybe £3m (at the very most) to tempt Town into getting an injury-prone top-earner off their books.

I'm a big fan of McGoldrick and would rather he stays at Town but if the price is right and it allows us to bring in a more robust player then I suppose it makes sense to sell.

Don't doubt his ability but would question his being able to stay fit for a whole season particularly with McCarthys playing style.
It is well known around the town that he really wants to get back up towards the Nottingham area so I would imagine he would go for it if Wednesday came in for him and I think he would better suit their style of play.
I was in the sell him camp when Leicester offered a stupid price for him and nothing I have seen since has changed my mind.

If we sell it will be the same old story , Ian Milne will come on here say that all the transfer money will be available , the Marcus Evans is god lot will jump up and down cheer and suggest everyone under the sun , then just before the season starts we will pick up someone from the last chance saloon known as a freebie , and the club then says we wait until the loans start and we will see what's around then and get some poor sausage that has no hope of playing first team football anywhere else

Personally I think MCG performs when he plays for us so it goes without saying that he would perform elsewhere.

I never really got the impression he has ever angled for a move, every year we've all panicked that's he's off and he hasn't really got close to the exit door.

If he's fit I think we will score girls, seems a bigger if every year.

How does Marcus Bent keep getting caught with niff

A good player who may be more suited to a Rooney-style midfield role as he gets older, BUT whether he remains free of injury remains to be seen so if a decent bid comes in I would consider it.

He's class on his day McGoldrick but also injury prone, I would cash him in there are loads of players out there who we could sign to replace him starting with league one - Billy Sharp, sheff Utd, Lee Gregory, Mwall, Nicky Ajose, Swindon.
Championship, Naki Wells, Huddersfield, Jonathan Kodjoa, B City, up the stakes McCormack, Fulham & Will Grigg & Sam Winnall who have come up with Wigan & Barnsley. All 17 plus goal scorers I've done my research.
Get 2 mill for Davd Mcg can't see us getting anymore these players are an ideal replacement!!

planetblue_2011 added 01:38 - Jun 22
Grigg was league one top scorer with 25 goals Nicky Ajose close 2nd with 24.
McCormack notched 21 for a Fulham team who struggled last season.
Hope Mick does his research this season 👍🏻

Have to say I'm surprised so many fans would see him go. Agreed McGoldrick isn't the most reliable fitness wise but when he's fully fit he can be different class. Technique on the ball is premier league esque, he could really blossom next season. Hope he stays, massive fan of his.
