Muhren and Thijssen at Newcastle
Friday, 29th Jul 2016 10:42

Blues legends Frans Thijssen and Arnold Muhren will be at Town’s game at Newcastle United on Saturday 22nd October.

The pair will be the guests of honour on a special boat trip from IJmuiden to Newcastle organised by DFDS Seaways.

Also on the trip will be Town fan and Dutch journalist Tom van Hulsen, the author of the book Het Geheim van Ipswich (The Secret of Ipswich) about Muhren and Thijssen’s time with the Blues, who will give a presentation about English football on the boat.

Oh, to have two like them again. Absolute class and a joy to watch. Those not old enough to have seen them play for Town, you don't know what you missed.
'Legends' is an often overused term, but not in this case, as it fits perfectly.

There are very few 'great' footballers that actually deserve to be called great-but those two do.
As hoppy says, true legends of ITFC.

Frans Thjissen must go down as the best moustachioed player I have ever seen in a Town shirt.

@GeoffSentence: Better than John Wark? Controversial!

It does lead to the wider question, of course, as to what would be the best Ipswich all-time team made up of players sporting facial hair. Bart in goal?

Sign them up as consultants to teach McCarthy how the game should be played.

Oh yes, what a team these two played in;dont think some of us realised at the time just how good they were.

Think Arnold has had a full time coaching role for some time over in Holland;but not so sure about about Frans(Expect Phil or Gav might know).

Might do worse than utilising any spare time they might have as Continental Scout.Dont think we have had one since Romeo Zondervan, using My Scout instead.

Or better still if Frans isn't working full time how about having him as a football skills coach.Just a thought.

Arnie looks younger....

He was incredible - then Franz turned up and arguably was better. Unbelievable players.

Skill, power, elegance, sportsmanship, goals from 25 yards out and forty yard cross field passes to feet.

Thank you Sir Bobby.

Oh yes Ferguson, TWTD indeed! I remember one particular moment in a match against Aston Villa (it was shown for quite a long time on the opening credits for MOTD) when Franz bamboozled the then Villa's skipper (mortimer) with the ball so much, the guy virtually fell over his own feet!

Arnie of course is a perfect example of how a longer ball can be utilised deliberately and accurately (and any other distance you care to mention!)

Might never see the likes again, but who knows, maybe just maybe, in the fullness of time, one or two of our young, up and coming midfielders might end up being talked about in the same way. Let's all hope so!

On Arnies debut he looked lost and bewildered at the ball flying over his head!! we soon adapted to his strengths and the flowing football began Mariner and Brazil benefitted enormously as did Gates playing behind the big two up front, then came Frans a few games later who made the side(I will never forget him nutmegging Souness who completely lost it and chased him all over the park) the best(that includes the 61/61 side sorry boys) I've seen at portman road!!! wouldn't do our midfielders any harm to watch a few videos of these two in action
