McCarthy Bemoans Bad Marking and Town Seeming to "Unravel"
Saturday, 13th Aug 2016 18:01

Town boss Mick McCarthy was left bemoaning his side’s failure to mark from a corner and his team seeming to “unravel” as they were defeated 2-0 at Brentford.

McCarthy was pleased with his team’s performance before the break and didn’t see the result coming at half-time: “I didn’t see that being the scoreline at half-time, I don’t think anybody did, truth be known.

“We didn’t mark properly from a corner, did we? Gives them a goal, but what’s disappointing is that we seemed to unravel after that and looked like conceding another one, which is unlike us.

“And, of course, we did, and that made it really difficult for us because they can play and it’s harder then to chase it and get after it, especially two games in with the heat that’s around and probably the disappointment of conceding the goals that we did.”

After last week’s 4-2 victory over Barnsley McCarthy was frustrated that the Blues conceding from set pieces and he admits to concerns with both goals today having come from corners.

“Yes, of course,” he added. “I don’t like conceding goals from those things, they can be avoided. And we’ll try and make sure we do avoid it.”

He says it’s something they spend a lot of time working on in training: “Of course, we do look at it, it’s not like we just forget all about it.

“People have got jobs to do and if we do them correctly then goals don’t end up in the back of our net. But quite clearly we haven’t, have we?”

He added: “If they left me unmarked like that I’d score with it and all, and I’m 57. I’m not joking either.

“We mark man for man, people talk about zonal marking, but there’s no right way or wrong way in terms of zonal or man for man.

“The only right way is stopping your bleeding man form scoring, that’s the only right way. It’s however you do it and we didn’t do it, did we?

“I played there for a long time and I’m sure somebody scored against me at some stage, so it does happen. But that was far too simple.”

Why does he feel his side were so under par once they were behind? “Straight after the game it would be impossible for me to analyse and say anything about that.

“We’d had a really good first half, everybody knew that, I think everybody in the ground knew we’d played really well, it had been a good performance.

“Then to concede like we did, it shouldn’t knock the stuffing out of us, but it appeared to. It certainly gave them a lift as well, of course.”

Brentford boss Dean Smith felt the first goal was key: “We gave the ball away cheaply in the first half but we had some good passages of play just before the break and then the goal gave us a lot of confidence.

“After that we showed glimpses of what we can do. There’s a still a lot to work on, but we were very good today in terms of competing for second balls, we had to do that side of the game and did that well.”

He added: “Getting that first win is big. We’ve got players who have never played in the Championship before and probably felt a bit apprehensive.

“We didn’t play well last weekend and got beaten, but I’ve said to the players I believe they are a really good Championship team but they have to believe in themselves.”

Yes it's the heat that does it Mick. If nothing else it's a new one for you. It's an original. It's the heat.

I always get the feeling he has a rant at the players through the media and not to the players themselves. Of course I don't know what goes on behind close doors but the same mistakes happen time after time

I didn't even go, but what that man is spouting has got to be the biggest load of drivel I'd heard since..............oh Jewell and his video! Enough is enough!

Played well = didn't concede.

I fear there will be many matches where there is a zero in the Town's goals for column. We simply don't have a quality, fit or on form striker.

I have in the past, despite my concerns surrounding the style of play and poor results, stopped short of calling for MMs head. However, the same old excuses are becoming tedious and Micks decisions, such as selecting Douglas (who shouldn't even be on the bench in my opinion) to change a game and picking Chambers at right back, means his position must surely be considered. Mick has done little to address the same things week in week out. Yes, he is not helped by an unambitious owner who despite spending two extremely modest fees on players with little top end championship experience, has generally not invested to the level required. In fact we laughably have a weaker squad with players getting older and not as effective and remarkably fewer players than last season. The final straw is the cheap re signing of Luke Varney. Division one at best. Evans and McCarthy really need to ask themselves some tough questions. We simply aren't good enough and the time must soon come where fans speak out about Evans charging more to watch a less quality product.

We weren't that bad first half, but Brentford were so diabolical in that opening 45 that the fact we hadn't scored seemed to make it feel inevitable we'd mess it up second half. The Barnsley result didn't half paper over some cracks.

2-0 down and on comes Douglas. Give me strength...

Mick will be out by the end of October. I will be surprised if we are not in the bottom 6 at that point. Make no mistake, this season will be a relegation battle. Not saying we will go down but it will be uncomfortable.

Sounds like times up
As a player MM kicked grappled head butted forwards out of the way
Now despite serious weekly practicising of these tasks HIS men cannot or will not take to HIS coaching of these praiseworthy tasks.
He was not a midfield player , he was not a forward
He was a man to salvage other people's messes.
Now sadly he has created a mess of his own which many many supporters are now truly finding it difficult to tolerate.
Sadly our invisible Owner and our ineffectual Chief Executive have so little real football brain that the reality of ITFC really falling into its deepest gloom is blind to them.

I have no faith in him anymore. I once liked him for his honesty now he has to be honest with himself and jog on!

Bru was absolutely terrible, Sears not much more effective (but more positive). How Bru keeps his place, I do not know - I can't remember a single well-placed forward pass from him all game.
Ward superb, covered his ground, made vital interceptions and supported all over the field. Long season ahead.

Muccletonjoe.. you still believe we are going in the right direction with MM?

Just so much negativity about the way the team
Plays and the way MM does his interviews. It's all so boring! I feel like the players are a bit bored of the same game plan now and we're going to see a slow decline over the next few weeks.

Trouble is, MM is stubborn as a mule, ME is doing everything in the cheap, so how does this situation end..?

It's feeling to me like the Barnsley win was a blip, as our pre-season results were poor and we got knocked out of the Cup to a League Two team so maybe today's result is not surprising. With McGoldrick out injured and Bishop looking off form (not the only one), it's hard to be positive. I expect we will see a Premier League loan signing or two shortly, we have to bring new talent in. Bru cannot be our first choice central midfielder, surely.

Most of you moaning weren't even there - admit it?

We were of first half actually.

Sh1t second half.

And no we won't be in a relegation battle.

What does he expect when he drops our best and certainly most consistent defender in Smith in favour of Bera and continues to play Chambers at right back .... Joke

Same old story. We have a sub standard squad with a lack of depth and quality. There is a lack of quality and MM talks to the fans like they are stupid. I'm sick of his smart quips and poxy excuses. Owner not investing enough. We are going backwards. I predict we lose the next 3 games and will be the laughing stock of anglia

Romford blue-of course not, the ground only holds 10,000.

But it sounds like a pretty typical performance from us judging by the end of last season and this season so far bar second half vs Barnsley!

We need rid of McGoldrick( our undoubted sick note & a constant burden of uncertainty & therefore inconsistency ),& worry too about Hyam similarly.Of those left I agree completely with negative assessment of Douglas-- looks physically and mentally slow about the pitch; AND previous comment about lack of spunk. Initiative and determined character are so obviously evident in the lack of joined up thinking and commitment defensively.Set piece failures are an unattractive and unacceptable trait that necessitates action. Some heads have to roll, some players be temporarily or perhaps permanently replaced: I'm absolutely confident in our management team,BUT Chief Exec uninspiring( like the last one !) AND Evans must spend or quit,we are heading into a cul de sac !

If we keep faith in MM then its a mid table finish but at least we will not be relegated. Change the manager and it may improve but there again could end in disaster if we choose the wrong man, something ME is not too good at!

I for one, am willing to gamble as I am completely bored of the current situation. We can already see its going the same way as last year.

Fans are slowly disappearing, hence he extension of the early bird scheme and the offer of six or twelve matches. Something has to change to get our attention back, ideally the sacking of the manager, the resignation of ME or preferably both!
