Williams Fed Up With Injury Prone Tag
Saturday, 29th Oct 2016 06:00

Loanee Jonny Williams admits he’s fed up with being labelled injury prone with the video game FIFA even including it as one of his playing characteristics.

“I’ve even seen it on FIFA,” the Wales international laughed ruefully. “That did hurt to be honest but it’s one of those things you just have to take on the chin. I’m not the only one because they’ve got Jack Wilshere in the same bracket.

“I wouldn’t say I am injury prone, I would say I’m prone to bad tackles. It’s a shame but it’s the way I play and I won’t change that because it’s the top players who run with the ball and that’s how I play.

"When I put in good performances and don’t get injured that’s what I do, carry the ball forward. Of course it’s going to invite tackles.

“I’ve spoken to coaches and my agent about whether it’s something I can change but it’s not really possible. I was kicked in the Euros so it’s not just in a pre-season game against non-league opposition that it’s going to happen. It’s the way I play and we’re not all as quick as Messi to get out of the way of the tackles.

“I was actually becoming better at getting out of the way but I wasn’t able to get out of the way of the one at Farnborough [in pre-season].

"I found myself in a sticky situation and looking back at the tackle it could have been even worse, to be honest. I used to go flying in as a 17-year-old for the 50-50 tackles.”

Williams, 23, still plays FIFA but - having played 34 matches in a less injury-affected 2015/16 - hopes they might amend his profile in future versions, adding: “Everybody has different traits and stats — Ronaldo has flair but unfortunately I’ve got injury prone.

"As I said, Jack Wilshere’s the same and there are similarities — the way we play in the middle, neither of us are massive lads and we like to travel with the ball.

“Opponents are always going to try to stop you but it’s the way I’ve always played since I was about eight years old and I won’t change. I take it on the chin and I feel I’m privileged to be in the game.”

Well Jonniesta might be fed up with the injury prone tag, but that's exactly what he and McGoldrick are....injury prone!

It'll be a race to see who gets injured first now.

ArnieM

Coke will be in that race also. Different quality player but I'd be shocked if he hasn't got "injury prone" as one of his stats.

Wouldn't want him any other way.I know he wont start today and lets hope we only play one defensive midfielder.Depending on availability of players wouldn't mind seeing either Digby or Webster in place of Skues and/or Douglas;but know highly unlikely to get it with this Manager.

I know that MM isn't going to play all out attacking footy today as he has said it wont be open like against Burton even;but lets hope its a better than last season when he played 3 defensive mids and lost 1-0.

Its a nice day for 'it',and for football!

I recall Kieron Dyer also moaning about being labelled 'injury prone' : his defence, as I recall, was that he'd only had 2 injuries in his whole career, but the latter one had lasted about 10 years. Williams is another fragile little flower that needs to toughen up or find something else to do with his life : that goes for McGoldrick too and Hyam, though the longer he's out the better for everyone.
