Knudsen Fit as McCarthy Hints at Changes at Wigan
Thursday, 15th Dec 2016 10:36

Left-back Jonas Knudsen will be fit for Saturday’s away game against second-bottom Wigan Athletic having missed Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Birmingham with a tight hamstring.

“He should be back," Blues manager Mick McCarthy said. “I’m expecting him to be all right, that was the prognosis, he was only going to miss the one game.”

Myles Kenlock did well in the Danish international’s place on Saturday and McCarthy didn’t rule out sticking with the 20-year-old academy product, while also hinting that he could shuffle his pack.

“He played well, I was really pleased with him,” the Town boss added. “We’ll see, there might be a few changes. I’ll have a look.”

Midfielder Teddy Bishop has been ruled out for up to a month with an ankle injury, while Tommy Smith (back), Luke Hyam and Giles Coke (both knee) are all recovering from surgery, while Paul Digby (also knee) is out until January.

McCarthy admitted he was amazed to hear that Gary Rowett had been relieved of his duties at St Andrew’s only a day after the Blues’ visit with the Midlanders’ new owners subsequently appointing Gianfranco Zola as boss.

“I spoke to Gary yesterday, I rang him and he got back to me quite late last night,” McCarthy continued. “I just said to him, ‘Thank goodness we didn’t win’ tongue-in-cheek, of course.

“I said to him that I tend not to get surprised with what happens in football, but that did shock me.

“I guess if you’ve got new owners, they want to change it. I’m amazed, though. I’m astounded by it because I think he was doing a particularly good job.

“And he’s a really good guy, Gary, I’ve a lot of time for him. I said to him,’Enjoy your Christmas, you’ll get a job pretty soon’.

“When you’ve lost your job you don’t feel like that if you’re that person. He’ll get another job, he’ll be back in football PDQ, don’t you worry.”

Hopefully McCarthy's right and Howett does get a job soon. At Ipswich.

Enjoy your Christmas Gary, Zola will be useless, he can't even see out of the dugout without being on a stepladder.

Sometime I'm glad we don't have an owner who is crazy and just sacks for no reason. But recently, I wish we did. MM has done all he can for us, his style of disciplined defence driven football stabilised us 4 years ago, but is now threatening to be our downfall. I just pray to the footballing gods that our enigmatic owner can make a telephone call from his Brazilian prison cell to do the needful.

The best analogy i've seen of the Gary Rowett situation is as follows:

"Sacking Gary Rowett and replacing him with Zola is like dumping Mila Kunis and moving in with Katy Hopkins"

You can't argue with that really

Need to try something different. Would love him try 3-5-2 (flavour of the month i know) but with Webster's ability to step forward with the ball and means we can still incorperate the undroppable Chambers without him giving the ball away so much at RB.
Could be played with 2 up top or two attacking midfielders (lawrence/williams) behind a centre forward. Without Murph i dont feel the need for out and out wide men.

If Knudsen comes back in this will tell you all you need to know about MM. Thought he was really coming on as a player towards end of last season and start of this, but in recent weeks he has been dreadful, even worse than Douglas. If Myles loses his place on the back of a good performance what hope have any of the youngsters at this club got.

Smithy added 11:05 - Dec 15
3-5-2 really wouldn't be a bad shout, Webster is comfortable in possession and both Kenlock and Emmanuel get forward well, may actually suit Chambers in that he can cover at right back when Emmanuel bombs forward. All our central midfielders are better in a 3, including Williams, Ward and Bru while this could allow the strikers to stay more central with maybe better service?

WOAH WOAH WOAH SMITHY!

That's tactical changes, we know MM doesn't do those. What do you think this is, a football team?!

Sorry guys but why is it that every time we're having a bad patch that Knudsen gets slated. While I agree that with Kenlock playing well he shouldnt just walk back in, he actually had done little wrong. In the last calendar year we've only conceded 4 goals from his side of the field. He's been our most consistent defender for some time now. Yes, he needs to improve his delivery into the box when he gets forward, .a definite weakness in his game right now. But defensively, he's fine. He may not have been at his absolute best in a couple of games but its not easy to keep playing consistently ehenvthosecaround u are struggling. But Yes, Kenlock should keep his place on Saturday. Very much doubt he will tho.

I'm sorry but any manager that makes the comment "thank goodness we didn't win" (whether it be in jest or otherwise) when their side is quickly sinking down the table needs to be sacked. It is a shame that managers who are doing a decent job are sacked when others seem to be bulletproof regardless of their attitude or ability.

The announcement from Birmingham City said that "in football you can never stand still'. Very true and it certainly seems to be the case at Ipswich... only we're going backwards.

Sack Big Mick and replace him with Katie Hopkins !!

Why are people asking for us to get Rowett in as manager? Birmingham said the exact same things about him as we do about McCarthy so we would be no better off, just lumbered with another defensive tactically inept manager for years

Superblue95 Having looked at the Birmingham forum they thought he had done a great job on no money and seemed gutted he got the sack. Zola a great great player but his managerial record is very poor

The only change I want to see is this muppet gone.

The other changes will follow, by definition.

Leighonseablue- I thought when reading Harry's piece before the game that they seemed to be fed up with him and complained about him being too negative, just like Mick. Differences of opinion I suppose and now that they've gotten Zola it might be a case of the grass isn't always greener. I want McCarthy out but not sure I'd want Rowett either

Mick's coming out of retirement to lead the front line. Naturally playing himself out of position.

From Barty

Knudsen fit - that's a set back

MM needs to drop Douglas , Chambers & Varney & leave out Knudsen

Wholesale changes needed - lets face it - it cant get any worse that the crap football we have had to endure for most of the season so far

No chance of that though !!

If he brings Knudsen back in place of Kenlock it will send everyone the wrong message. We know he'll do it though

Surco72 added 13:36 - Dec 15
For me Knudsen is bang average and loses his man a lot and doesn't stop crosses into the box . And Blues1 the goals may not come from down his side but a large amount are scored his side because he doesn't pick up the runner .
MM is trying to say what the fans want to hear regarding the youngsters starting or different formations etc he said the exact same rubbish at the end of last season but has still failed to give some players a good run unlike his favourites .If he drops Kenlock as he did Emmanuel just because others are fit who have not performed it is wrong .

As for Zola he has a much higher win rate in the championship than mighty MM has achieved at any club , perhaps the Birmingham owners were fed up watching dire football ?
