McCarthy Not Ruling Out Summer Move for Barnsley's Watkins
Thursday, 9th Mar 2017 16:55

Town boss Mick McCarthy admits he’s a fan of versatile Barnsley man Marley Watkins and was coy when asked whether he might be a player he could move for in the summer.

Watkins, 26, was the subject of a rebuffed £1 million offer last summer and Town were again linked with the midfielder or striker in January.

“Yes, we’d seen him before but we kind of picked him up more when we were doing the analysis playing against them in the first game of the season," McCarthy said when asked if he was a fan of Watkins.

“Everything we watched we liked and whenever I’ve seen him since I do like him.”

Might he be one he moves for in the summer? “I don’t know. We’ll see, he’s out of contract.”

"He's out of contract.." will definitely be the sort we'll go for then if there's no fee involved. Whether we offer decent wages or not might be the deciding factor in the end.

Better to spend the wages on someone like him than loans. Hard to get excited about Mccarthy bringing in summer signings though when he chooses to start 8 defensive players home to a side 21st in the table who were on a 6 game losing run, then not make changes when it wasn't working.

Would he accept £100 a week though?

Jeez guys, what's with all the negativity!? MM has been very successful as a whole in the transfer market - McGoldrick, Murphy, Sears, Mings, Berra, Bart, Webster not to mention the loans Fraser, Williams and Lawrence. Mick has his faults but he knows a good player when he sees one...and if it's on a free because he's out of contract then all the better!

Jack27, what we need is MM to play a formation that suits attacking players, a formation that excites fans, especially in home games. It has been dour watching these last two seasons, when out team selection seems so intent on defending a point and not going for a win, even against poor sides.
Watkins would be a good addition, but we need MM to have a plan B, that uses a stronger bench to go for a win, not try to hold on for a draw.

I see (after searching Wikipedia) that he played for Inverness Cal Thistle in the past, perhaps Terry Butcher could give MM an insight of the player?

I think you'll find for every Mings there at least 10 duds. MM has signed close to 50 players over the last 4 years, where are they now? How long before Moore, Taylor, and Rowe are shipped out on loan or disposed of?
