Town Among Clubs Linked With Wigan Striker Bogle
Friday, 28th Jul 2017 13:43

Town are reported to be one of a number of Championship clubs eyeing transfer-listed Wigan Athletic striker Omar Bogle.

According to Sky Sports, new Latics boss Paul Cook feels the 24-year-old doesn’t fit into his style and has made him available, apparently for £800,000. The Blues, QPR and Barnsley are all said to have expressed an interest.

In January, a few days before his £750,000 deadline day move to Wigan, TWTD reported that Town sent a scout to watch Bogle in action for his former club Grimsby at Stevenage.

Following his move from the Mariners, the Sandwell-born 6ft 3in tall frontman, who has two years left on his Latics contract, grabbed three goals in 12 starts and two sub appearances as Wigan dropped into League One.

The one-time Solihull Moors striker had previously netted 19 times this season for the League Two Mariners, having scored 16 goals as the Lincolnshire club won promotion from the Vanarama National League through the play-offs during the previous season.

A fourth striker remains top of manager Mick McCarthy's wish-list, however, speaking yesterday the Blues boss indicated that he expected that addition to be a loan signing.

This would be a great signing. Mick/Marcus please make it happen!

I hoped we'd sign Bogle in January. With McCarthy moaning about transfer fees being 'bonkers' to the extent it is impossible to sign a striker on a permanent basis, he we have a 24-year-old available for 850K. Bogle might turn out not to be good enough, or he may score goals for us and be worth 8.5M in no time. Worth a gamble? I think perhaps it is.

750K for a 24 year-old who looked capable at Championship level and was scoring for fun before that in League 2. Surely worth a go?

Think it would be a good signing, certainly fits the mould of something different at 6ft 3inch. At a price of 800k it would certainly be within our budget. Would probably prefer Rudy Gestede on loan as he is proven at this level. But would have no problems with Omar Bogle on a permanent basis.

Being from Grimsby and watching them regularly, I've seen him plenty of times. My personal opinion is that he's not good enough for us. During his time up here he did score goals, but he also had a poor attitude, very lazy and a big ego throughout. I'm not so sure he'd get on well with Mick McCarthy. He also never scored from open play for Wigan in half a season in the Championship last season.

However, he does have some good attributes that could see him develop into a decent player with the right coaching and commitment from himself. I certainly wouldn't want us to pay above £800k for him as our other 3 strikers are much better. I'd love to be proved wrong if he did sign though.

I do wonder whether it's Wigan's style of football that's incompatible or the kid's attitude. I really hope not the latter, as otherwise this'd be a good signing.

@Michael11 - that's interesting considering the extent MM prioritises good personalities with his signings. It's also clear that he keeps discipline tight at the club - let's just say there have been less stories since he took charge.

My personal concern is that Paul Cook is the type of boss we should have and he rejected him due to not being compatible with Cook's style of football. In fact there was a strong rumour that Cook was the favoured option to replace Mick if he walked.

However he could be the replacement for Murphy we've been gagging for. He actually has a much better scoring reputation than Murphy when he joined.

Worth a punt at that price, definitely a big target man which we desperately seek. I've also read about his temperament but I'm sure Mick could sort that, if he's being put up for transfer the lad will have a point to prove, get him signed!! COYB

Obviously has some potential but it has to be said he looked very average for Wigan and Paul Cook is a good judge of a player. I am sure the club will have its homework done and we havent made many errors in the transfer market in recent times. I will support him if he comes.

A real brut of a striker with a bit of pace from what ive seen of him. Cooks style will be pass and move, unlike MM, so would fit in well.

There are no miracle strikers coming out of the Prem on loan that would walk into our first team.

Given that, and that at $850k he is probably cheaper than a year long Prem loan, and will surely retain some value, then let's just make this happen. Compliments our other strikers and young enough for TC to work his magic on him.

Murphy money ? If we had picked up Garner and Bogle with that Murphy money last year or at Xmas, we would surely have not had the season we did. We need another in and Bogle looks about as good as we can afford so do it.....even if he costs $900k !

Like others I am unconvinced by him, however at 6 3", he is taller than I thought & he does have some talent. It's surprising that he is available so quickly & so comparatively cheaply after just 7 months with Wigan - it does ring some alarm bells. At 24 he would probably have some resale value even if it turned out badly though.
Personally I like the idea of bringing in Rudy Gestude, proven at this level and the type of forward we are missing. I wouldn't have thought it possible a couple of weeks ago, but he probably finds himself down the pecking order now following some big signings up there.

I'd spend that cash on Akinde on 2 year deal from Barnet. Powerful, scores goals and wins loads of penalties. He's loved there and they aren't as poor as some others in the league but with what we can offer I think we'd get him. Main thing is that age isn't massively on his side but he is probably in his prime

Nakhi wells just been made available.

I think we should go in for Jordan hugill, stevie May or Louis Moult.

Keep the spending coming we still need additions.

I think he scored 2 against Norwich, and he wasn't even fully fit for a lot of his games after moving to Wigan so a bit harsh to judge him on those showings. When you consider the silly sums that are being banded about for other average strikers (who have hardly set the world alight with their past goal-scoring records) perhaps this guy could represent good value at under a million. He might be like that 16/1 outsider who romps home. I'd rather we spent £750k on a hungry striker that's done the business in the lower leagues rather than risk millions on a striker that's barely scored any goals at any level. I'm talking Fletcher to Boro for 6.5 million. Maybe Boro have done their homework and sense his best days are ahead of him, but that one did strike me as expensive, however, with all their parachute riches perhaps it's like loose change to them!
And Brighton are being linked with an 8 million move for Tom Lawrence, in the current market 8 million for him sounds a bargain! If only we had just of gone up, we might well of been in a position to sign him up permanently.

And agree with Len Brennan, Rudy Gestude would be a target man more in keeping with Murphy. He's always been a handful at this level. He got a lot of goals for a very average Blackburn side so I'd definitely like to see him come here be that on loan or ideally permanent but I can't imagine we could get him any other way than on loan in our current pressing financial circumstances.

Could be the final part of the jigsaw we've been looking for?

24..big,strong,quick and relatively cheap by today's standards..personally i'd take the gamble before we lose out to another championship side.

Stop dithering and get it done 👊🏾

Wells for 1m makes sense, surprised hes being let go. Hugill will be too much.

Like to see it. But dont think it will happen in a million years

With our financial limitations this could be a good gamble. Maybe partnered with Sears of Garner he may thrive.

Wells already likes the Ipswich facilities incidentally...

@Marcus

Omar's a decent enough guy personality wise. He'd always socialise with fans in the town and on social media etc, It was more that he seemed to thinks he's better than he is and didn't need to put the effort in consistently which was the problem. When he fancied it he was head and shoulders above League Two standard.

Could be a bargain at £800k if he was to come and knuckle down. He has the attributes to improve with a bit of coaching from TC.

midastouch added 14:58 - Jul 28
Some good points Michael, if he came here with the right attitude (which he'd need with Mick or no doubt he'd be dropped like a hot potato) he might just surprise 1 or 2. Although I'm not sure I have full confidence in TC's training methods based on how our strikers have performed in recent seasons but maybe they haven't done justice to what he's worked with them on the training pitch. Our strikers have been lacklustre ever since Murphy hit 27 so hopefully they can put that right this season as if they don't start firing we're going to struggle again this season.

midastouch added 15:07 - Jul 28
And the strikers did have to try and feed off scraps last season so obviously that has to be considered before condemning too heavily.

Gestede & Wells are not in the equation-too expensive for us.

Don't know much about this lad apart from an impressive scoring record for previous clubs at different levels & recently in struggling team.

Personally think he is an interesting proposition for us.
