Nydam Signs New Long-Term Deal
Thursday, 9th Nov 2017 17:05

Midfielder Tristan Nydam has put pen to paper on a new long-term Blues contract which runs to the summer of 2021 with the club having an option for a further season.

Nydam, who was 18 on Monday, previously agreed a two-year deal which was due to expire next summer on his 17th birthday, the longest players are permitted to sign until they turn 18.

The Zimbabwe-born, Colchester-raised academy product, who was recently claimed to be interesting Arsenal, made his senior debut at Luton in the Carabao Cup in August and has now made eight first-team starts and five sub appearances.

“I’m absolutely buzzing,” Nydam told iFollow Ipswich. “I’ve been at the club since I was nine years old and this extension is great for me and shows the hard work has paid off.

“The gaffer has put his trust in me and I can’t be more thankful for that. It’s been a decent season for me so far. I’ve adjusted fairly well to the Championship and I’m training well so I just need to keep going. I feel good and this is where I want to be.”

Nydam won his first and so far only England U19s cap in August, having made one appearance for the U18s side last season.

Great news especially if Arsenal are sniffing round. We need to tie these talented lads down to contracts as soon as they are old enough.

Nydam has amazed me at the height he can jump to balls. Up against players 6 inches or more taller than him, he often gets to the ball!

Say what you want about ME but he definitely has a vision for the club, he wants superstars to join Ipswich young and progress instead of having to buy them at 25. It's actually a smart desicion and only way we will be able to have superstars in our team. Knock on effect is young players will see Ipswich as the place to play for youngsters so better talent will be drawn here.

Just not the right manager to develop them.

This is great news. After many years it finally feels like the academy is producing quality players, the U23 team is flying, and the manager is giving youngsters the chance in the first team. I do feel positive about Ipswich at the moment, which is not something I have felt for some time.

Bluebel. He learned to jump high when hiding from me and my colleagues at the school I work in. We are all chuffed with 'our boy' Tris and once a Bennie always a Bennie! He is a great lad and we are all behind him to do great things at Ipswich. Chuffed the lad extended his contract.

Fantastic news, he's so calm on the ball, unlike most of our players.

Sadly all these new deals for out thriving academy players doesn't mean they will not be sold, only that Evans can take in more money which will not be given to whatever manager happens to be in charge - it won't be McCarthy, thank god!

Fantastic news! Downes and Nydam have emerged this season and really exciting players. Compared to other clubs in this league we give youth a proper chance in the first team.

He looks a very promising player. At least he won't be able to leave the club on a free next summer.

ArnieM I think you are spot on.
Pleased that I am because Nydam has done really well and earned his contract I cannot help but think it is just Evans making sure he gets as much money as he can if he is eventually sold on.
The academy are doing really well producing some fine players but sadly I doubt the club will benefit from them for very long at all.

We're nearly £100m in debt so will have to keep selling prospects like Nydam just to keep the debt from spiralling further. Mick did well to get a couple of million to spend this summer. Until Evans invests serious money in this club we're just treading water, staving off financial doom.
