Blues Among Clubs Linked With Hamilton Skipper
Friday, 22nd Dec 2017 15:23

Town are one of a number of clubs reported to be keen on Hamilton Academical skipper Mikey Devlin, who is closing in on a return to action having missed all the season up to now with a cruciate knee ligament injury suffered in May.

According to TEAMtalk, Cardiff are ready to make a move for the 24-year-old central defender, who is out of contract with the Scottish Premiership side next summer, during the January window with the Blues and Preston also claimed to be interested.

Devlin came through the ranks at New Douglas Park and has made 135 starts and 12 sub appearances, scoring five goals, since making his senior debut in January 2011, in addition to two spells on loan at Stenhousemuir early in his career.

While the Blues might well look to recruit another centre-half in January, manager Mick McCarthy would ideally want a player able to go straight into his side if required rather than someone still working on their fitness after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Speaking yesterday, McCarthy said Town are unlikely to make too many January additions and those signings are more likely to be loans unless someone is sold. He added that he is under no pressure to offload anyone during the window.

a dodgy injury to come back from, 5 goals in seven years, hasn't played this season , and we are interested ! , REALLY ? No disrespect to the player, but why would we be looking to sign him ?

That's a serious injury so why would we be interested? Needs to play before anyone would take a punt

More likely to be Conner Goldson on loan if he don't get first team action.

Have taken risks with injury prone players before.Didn't think we gave Stephen Taylor enough time;but again he was injured most of the time here,as was Jonny Williams.

Now we have fellow Welsh International Emr Huws,Micks most expensive buy,and Tom Adeyemi, both colleagues at Cardiff City last season, who we have hardly seen;so I think in future Management should study injury records more closely,as it's no good having a good player on your books who hardly plays.

Shows what a shrewd Manager 'Colin' is by getting rid of these two,and look where Cardiff are,2nd in the Championship.

G...if he's not going to buy then of course he's nit under pressure to sell!!....MM talk .....a few quid for Morre May help sustain wages of any loanee and hopefully a better quality one....only down side about 5 English teams getting through to the champions league is that they will all want to be keeping large squads so some of the top talent usually avaliable might just have to stay put

Remember that we have a problem in central midfield: Skuse is aging, Hyam is long-term injured and Bru will be off in the summer. Against that background, selling Moore and making Connolly's move permanent would make huge sense to me. I understand that Joe Royle has a high opinion of Connolly.

Is it just me that came out in a cold sweat reading we're supposedly interested in a player with the words "New Douglas" connected with him?

Interesting to read that we are 'keen'. It would usuually say 'interested'. If we are trawling for a CB then there should be a few that we are interested in not just Goldson. It's probably just agent speak for 'I rang Ipswich and they said they'd have a look'.

We signed Huws and Ademebi in the Summer - both have poor injury records. Let's not sign another injury prone player.

A loan cb would make more sense. We also need to consider Tommy who isn't too far off being ready again and young Woolfen den. Like to see Moore back and if money is available in January then a move to sign Connolly. Agree that if someone is to be added permanently then they should be clearly better than what we have. Some strategic strengthening could be critical in getting us a foothold in top six. Certainly we do not want to make the same mistake we made a couple of years ago in not strengthening in January but has to be the right players at reasonable price.

And let's not forget some of the impressive performers in the U23s who could step up for a few games

No, No, No, although it is only paper talk...hopefully
Too many injury prone players here already
This seems to be why we win the race to sign these players as it seems other clubs do their homework, or we need to seriously look at our training regime
We let the current Scottish international CB go for free.and now have to pay for a second rate injury prone replacement !!!
