Town to Sign Forest Winger Carayol
Wednesday, 31st Jan 2018 13:48

TWTD understands the Blues are set to sign Mustapha Carayol from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer before this evening's 11pm deadline.

The 29-year-old winger is out of contract at the end of the season and will be joining the Blues in much the same way as Stephen Gleeson earlier in the month with Town taking on the remaining months of his deal after his departure from the City Ground.

Gambia international Carayol was a youth player with Swindon and Macclesfield before breaking into senior football with the MK Dons.

He spent time on loan with Crawley before joining Torquay on a permanent basis prior to a loan stint with Kettering.

Lincoln was his next port of call before he moved on to Bristol Rovers where he really made his name, securing a move to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2012.

He scored his first league goal on his Championship debut for the Teessiders in their 2-0 victory over the Blues at the Riverside in August 2012.

Having had spells out on loan at Brighton, Huddersfield and Leeds, the 5ft 11in tall pacy wideman joined Forest after leaving Boro - then managed by current Tricky Trees boss Aitor Karanka - by mutual consent in August 2016, signing a two-year deal.

Since moving to the City Ground, Carayol has made only 17 starts and 21 sub appearances, scoring three goals.

However, he has remained in their first team squad and started Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Hull before being replaced at half-time.

Pace had a few good games I said we should've pinched him from Bristol Rovers years ago

Remember him tearing chambers apart for Boro on sky a few years ago. Certainly an improvement on McGoldrick playing right wing imo

7 loan players. You're spoiling us Mick McCarthy.

And this probably means we'll have the good fortune for two more years of Mick taking.

Another journeyman. How many clubs?

Lucky to get him, we'll only be his 15 club.

Just another 17 games to put up with McCarthy.

May just can't come quick enough.

Do we need a winger ? I don't think so.

Is he any better than Rowe? I suspect not. Still of course we should give him a chance and wish him the best of luck but if his wages are higher than Rowe's it seems rather odd. But nonetheless I hope he hits the ground running and proves his worth for us for the remainder of the season.

Another short term option. Why didn't McCarthy just go at the start of the window? I don't think anyone for a second thinks his contract is being renewed so what's the point? Would've given the new man 5 or 6 months to see what he's got and where needs improving. Carayol isn't the best nor the worst signing and at least it's in a position that we badly needed someone.

I must confess to being envious of the comprehensive, indeed almost encyclopaedic knowledge, that some on here appear to possess with regard to the footballing abilities of every registered professional player. Surprising that some of you are not managers yourselves, or at the very least chief scouts. But then, perhaps some of you are.........

Oh a winger, we won't see him getting much game time then, or will MM play him as a centre forward but he will probably be converted to a fullback. Welcome to PR if it happens.

Filling gaps in the short term for a clean slate in the summer, probably would've been a loan if you could field more in a game. Might as well just write off this season.

Not a bad signing & considering we weren't expecting any more new faces, a good signing. He's one of those players I thought would be a great addition a few years ago, but don't really know how capable he is at this moment in time. Like @simonds92, I remember him destroying Chambers, so if he can bring that type of threat against other (real) full backs in this league, he will be an asset.
Similar to the Gleeson signing, He's at an important age contractwise, so he has every reason to do his utmost to prove he is worth a decent one, either here or elsewhere.
