McCarthy Now Favourite for Barnsley Manager's Job
Thursday, 8th Feb 2018 11:13

Blues boss Mick McCarthy is now some bookmakers' odds-on favourite for the vacant job at Barnsley, his hometown club where he started his playing career.

Having been very much an outsider in the early betting following Paul Heckingbottom’s departure for Leeds on Tuesday, McCarthy’s odds came in significantly this morning and, at the time of writing, stand at 8/11 with SkyBet and Bet Victor.

With Sky Bet Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley is second favourite at 6/4, current Tykes caretaker-manager Paul Harsley is third at 10/1 with former Leeds, Huddersfield, Preston and Sunderland manager Simon Grayson fourth at 14/1.

McCarthy, who celebrated his 59th birthday yesterday, was born in Barnsley and came through the ranks at Oakwell.

He made his senior debut in 1977 and went on to make 314 appearances, scoring 10 goals, before leaving for Manchester City in 1983, having been part of a side which had climbed from the Fourth to the Second Division.

It’s not the first time McCarthy has been the bookies' favourite for another job during his five-and-a-half-year spell with Town, the Blues boss, who is widely expected to move on when his contract is up in the summer, having been linked with a return to the Republic of Ireland role which he previously occupied between 1996 and 2002 on a couple of occasions.

Would make perfect sense if he goes there. If they come calling and he doesn't, that tells me he'll be staying on past his contract.

When is his next press conference? Surely he'd be asked if he's interested. Even if he says he isn't discussing his job then he hasn't ruled himself out, which most managers would do if they aren't interested.

Yes..Makes perfect sense all round.

We're pretty much safe in mid table so this would give a new manager time to assess things before the summer (rebuild).

Only problem is who........?

I might be wrong but doesn't MM have and has had some years a settle family home in Surrey? If so why would he want to go to Barnsley even if it is his home town, when the travelling could become an issue. I think he'll dig his heels in here until such time as his contract has run out and ME won't offer him another. Of course I may be well of the mark.

I am looking forward to coming back to Portman Road if this happens !

Can't see this happening. MM would consider himself above that - a top Championship club or a lowly Premier League club. Also his family home is in Kent/South London

Wherescounago dont think he has got a home in Surrey. He often goes home to Barnsley when we play in yorkshire so presume he has a home there.

It's all hypothetical and should he go I don't our recruitment to make the right decision on a replacement!

Think this is a win win for everyone!
The only reason I can see him not going is if he really believes we can still make the play offs, then he would stay!
If not he can go to Barnsley and with their fixtures, keep them up up this year.
We can get Mark Warburton In who is out of work and have a 1/4 of a season learning his style while safely staying up!
Please not Cowley again hoof ball

Why do people get my hopes up, Hoofball I will be joining you in the queues.

I think this is unlikely tbh.
The press/ bookies are basing this on

1: MM is from Barnsley and has previously played for them
2: His Town contract is up in the summer
3: There is known discontent by many Town fans about his style of football & MM has aluded to fact he might leave in the summer anyway.

Would he go to Barnsley?
Well, he'd have funds which he doesn't get here.
But I think Mick would be looking for a bigger tank to swim in - no disrespect intended toward Barnsley.

I personally think McCarthy has done a great job at Ipswich, people forget when he joined we were bottom of the championship and seemed certain to drop in to league 1, he has saved Ipswich even if it has been with uninspiring football. However I do agree that we have stagnated over the last few seasons and a new manager could improve things with some exciting mix of youth and knowledge. In my opinion I would like either Warburton or Grayson, both have managed with low budgets and pay exciting attacking football and try to bring through youth.

I can see this having legs IN THE SUMMER - not now.

I would be absolutely amazed if Mick would take this job on the basis of -
* JUST above relegation
* January transfer window being shut

Don't see it due to that alone.

Personally I don't hate McCarthy as many on here seem to and appreciate all he's done, especially in that first season and a half when the club was in absolute turmoil. He attracts decent players on no budget as well. however saying that I can't see him being here longer than the end of this season anyway and there seem to be wounds between the fans and McCarthy himself that will never be healed so not anti his departure at a point of the season when there's little chance of us going up or down. would give a new manager a decent amount of time to get used to the club/players before the start of next season and would give the players a chance to get used to a new playing style (fingers crossed)...would be interesting to see who we do get if he does go though.

Just for you Tony88 - I'll drive him there myself.
Seriously though - it's got to be a good move for him and the Town. They love him so a few more bums on seats at their games.
Those down here who have stopped going or giving up at the end of the season will change their minds = more bums on seats.
I have fancied Warburton for the job for sometime but it would need patience from supporters while he got the team playing his style so no overnight success.
