Ross and Hurst Remain Leading Contenders With Lampard Out of Race
Tuesday, 22nd May 2018 09:59

St Mirren’s Jack Ross and Shrewsbury’s Paul Hurst remain the leading contenders to take charge at Portman Road with former England skipper Frank Lampard no longer in the running, TWTD understands.

As we revealed at the end of last week, Lampard met with Marcus Evans on Friday for a second time and impressed the Blues owner with what he had to say, however, it emerged that the two parties were some distance apart when prospective personal terms were discussed.

Ross was also interviewed for a second time by Evans last week and continues to be the bookies’ favourite, now at evens with Bet Victor.

We understand that reports claiming Sunderland are showing strong interest in the 41-year-old are speculative as things stand, while St Mirren still hope to keep hold of the man who took them to the Scottish Championship title by 12 points.

The Buddies are believed to have offered Ross, who is currently contracted until the summer of 2020, an improved deal in order to tempt him to stay in Paisley, however, they wouldn’t be able to match the terms on offer at Portman Road.

It’s believed that the former defender, who is now away on holiday, will take the Town job if it is offered to him.

Hurst, 43, has been high up Evans’s list of potential new managers since it was decided former boss Mick McCarthy would be moving on back in late March.

Formal talks with the one-time Ilkeston, Boston and Grimsby manager are expected to follow Sunday’s League One play-off final, in which the Shrews take on Blues right-back Josh Emmanuel’s loan club Rotherham at Wembley, whether the Shropshire club win promotion to the Championship or otherwise. It's understood the Blues have been given a strong indication Hurst would be interested in the position.

Hurst is currently the third-favourite to take over at Town at 8-1 with Lampard ahead of him at 2-1.

Behind those three, Scott Parker and Tim Sherwood, who have both been interviewed, are at 20-1 along with Simon Grayson, while George Burley, Östersunds boss Graham Potter, John McGreal, Mark Warburton, Paul Cook, Shefki Kuqi and Tony Mowbray are all at 25-1.

In April Evans said he expected to name the Blues' new manager in late May or early June and that remains his timescale with an announcement next week appearing increasingly likely.

Just give Burley and Butcher the job and be done with it already.

Would be happy with either one, both are better fits than Lampard.

Good news. The prospect of a media circus, completely green new manger and Lampard's crooked uncle taking an interest would be a bad for for ITFC.
Now, if only we can rule out Sherwood as well...

On reading this it looks very likely Lampard is now out of the equation.Appears to be a two horse race between Hurst and Ross.I would be very happy with either of these gentlemen.👍

Oh wow wasn't expecting that. Good to hear that Ross will likely take the job if offered too. Makes me less anxious about waiting on Hurst

I do really like Frank Lampard and he was a fantastic player, but he isn't what we need right now. We want a young, ambitious manager with a little bit of a track record of success in management, not a young ex-pro looking for his first gig. I still want Paul Hurst as he has the better CV and knowledge of the English game, but I'd still be happy if we appointed Jack Ross.

Seems to me that all these candidates, Burley aside, have no Championship experience, and so could all be described as a punt.....as would George at this time. Hurst and Ross at least have positive styles of play in their locker....no one knows what a Lampard team would look like, other than he clearly is ambitious enough to make financial demands beyond ITFC which exposes our limitations once more.

We do need a decision though, and quickly before financially viable options start going away.

As I said the other day...'Hurst and Ross were favourites make no mistake' - but not a surprise Evans has not made a decision yet as he's waiting on the league one final to be resolved before the possible interview with Paul Hurst. Not more to be discussed really at this moment...

" it emerged that the two parties were some distance apart when prospective personal terms were discussed"

and there in a nutshell why appointing someone with no experience but an inflated opinion of there own worth would have been a complete disaster.

Ross or Hurst both fit the bill nicely

I wish people would stop going on about Burley and Butcher. Move on FFS

Ross is the favourite for the Sunderland job with the bookies because they are all about avoiding risk, and he had contact with them. It doesn't mean anything. Ross is right to keep his options open by talking to other clubs.
I'm going back and forth on Ross and Hurst depending on whether it's an odd or even day.
Clearly, ME must have sounded out Hurst, because if he wasn't interested he would have clearly stated that. We might as well wait to talk to Hurst now, but I'd be happy to hear that Ross has been hired.

wouldn't say no to Graham Potter as well

So a bloke with no experience has refused a good contract on the basis he wants more because he was a great player? Or was it more about budgets, staff etc?

So dear old Frank wants to be a manager so much that he's only interested in big money..seriously,how much money does the guy need?..at least that's weeded that one out & now everyone on here can say that they didn't want him anyhow...

🤣🙈

If they were some way apart on remuneration, it makes you wonder why even came for either interviews. It's probably a well known fact that ME doesn't throw his money around.
You'd have thought that Lampard would have enough money by now and that this would have been seen by him as an ideal first step on the ladder.
I'm not bothered at all personally as I think that he was seriously short of any experience and coaching badges too!

It's a win win both for both Hurst & Ross as they are currently in employment & potentially could be leaving their respective clubs for a decent pay rise. I like I've said many times on here before would prefer Hurst but would still gladly take Ross if we didn't get Hurst, just hope that we get at least one of them as I would hate to end up with somebody like Grayson! 😫 COYB

Pity, would have liked Lampard to have come tbh, needs to be more realistic with wage demands by the sounds of it. So Ross or Hurst after all, roll on next week.

So I'm reading this as Lampard wanting more than we were willing to offer...

This would be his first management job, in the second tier of English football, at a decent size club, an owner who has always backed his employees....

How much did he think he was entitled to?? Good riddance I say
