Hard working players who are reliable "going into the trenches". PH must be glad he's taken over from Mick McCarthy as he also likes players like that, we were short of them before Mick. However it seems he likes to encourage players to express themselves more and work to their qualities rather than to a strict structure. I really hope this is what will turn things upwards. Needing decent wingers has been a problem for a generation of players, I hope he can find those who will really make some impact, that could really make games worth watching.

I really really hope this means Huws and Bish are fit to play when we start. Those two could make such a huge difference if they can get and stay fit.

Whilst i agree that getting into the "trenches" was what Mick expected of his teams, i always thought we lacked the characters who individually personified that on the pitch with the odd exception. Basically we have lacked leaders for years and am sure PH is looking for that type of characteristic as much as anything.....and makes it interesting to see who ends up with the armband ! I can't see beyond Chambers, but would love it if PH proved me wrong either sees something in someone else, or brings someone in.

If Mick had said this - "going into the trenches" - at ANY point of his reign here even day 1, 6 months in etc he would have been called an absolute dinosaur etc.

So because we sign an up and coming manager from a lower league, who is spouting several things similar to Mick, that's okay!?

For what it's worth - I'm pleased Mick's gone. Also Hurt/ Clarke of Bristol Rovers were my two stand outs for the job - delighted to have Hurst.

Think a very very difficult season ahead, however hope Hurst can form his squad and give some youth a chance.

I'd happily take around 16th right now with several youth breaking in.

PortmanTerrorist - agree totally with your comment. For me, there is a lack of players that have that desire to win, Waggy and Bart excused from that. Too many happy to put in a 'shift' and take the money.

Certainly get the impression Hurst is more Hands on with transfers: you get the impression more likely with him than McCarthy to land his targets: everything he has said is encouraging I'm sure there will be 3/4 new faces by August just got to be patience:

I really like this guy, slackness abounded under MM and some lifestyle issues. I am for the first time, in a long time, hopeful about our future. Some players will fall by the wayside but I would love to see a team of players who give 110%, something that has been missing.

Currie10 - Mick was called a dinosaur because he played his teams like a dinosaur. This man does not play his teams like a dinosaur so he is not being called a dinosaur. As simple as that. Maybe "going into trenches" does not mean play 7 defensive players and hope to nick one in?

@Currie10 sorry but i'm calling B*****S on that comment. He was dong this at the start and noone battered an eyelid its only when someone KEEPS doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result and still 6 years later saying and doing the same things that hasn't worked when people criticize and rightly so! (And the players have admitted to Hurst they were getting bored of the Ireland trip the other day)

I'm pleased that he is taking a look at how the players character is coming through during a good hard slog, and obviously he is taking notes (so last seasons fav's have to work their nuts off well as everyone else I can see a couple of them not getting the special treatment this season and rightly so!!) hopefully this training regime will not result in so many injuries as in the past few seasons(which has been unacceptable!)

Pazzy - spot on, Chambers is a great captain, unfortunately that don't make him a good footballer.
Anyone on here who disagrees on the footballing part are either seriously deluded or inept at telling who can actually play the beautiful game. HOOF

I think we all need to chill a bit.

Most people endorsed the Hurst appointment and like MM I very much get the impression he isn't put off by the “gig” and understands the constraints.

The magical Robson team of the 80's was the result of putting together a unique set of players that all had different and wonderful attributes which when combined produced an exciting and sincilating product. Most of these players would have got in any of the teams of the day.

However, I think we have to dismiss our dreams to recreate this era and we have to look further back for our inspiration to the Ramsey era where most of the town team wouldn't have made it in any of the top teams at the beginning of the title winning season. To win the top flight at the first attempt with a collection of mainly unknown lower league acquisitions was a masterful achievement and hence Alf was dubbed the father of modern football, how he reshaped the way players played the game and introduced tactics never been seen before removing traditional half backs and inside forwards into different roles.

Now PH has already stated that there is no new formation that hasn't been tried. However, Mick saw players as full backs or wingers or central defenders or strikers and this somewhat has constraining factors. Mick often changed formation on his demand during games. He at times played full backs as wing backs although these players struggled to be more than a full back plying their trade a little further up the pitch.

Of course it is helpful to have a mix of experienced players in the line up and even one or two special players. Tottenham we're cited as an example in an earlier thread and how when the two wing backs push up to play a winger role the defensive midfielder drops back to a centre back role.

Continental models often train their youngsters first and foremost to be good footballers and then pen them into positions later, we tend to spot players by their physical attributes and typecast them into traditional positions to earlier.

Without being disrespectful to MM, I sense PH is a more subtlety intelligent coach and man, he doesn't have an ego and will have a clear vision in his mind of developing a team that can dynamically change formation during a match between 4 3 3; 3 4 3; 3 5 2, 4 4 2; etc. The players will do this instinctively based on their “press” and “zonal responsibilities”.

I therefore think we may be looking for a few good flexible players like the lad from Colchester and Fulham. We need to give PH some trust and time without moaning about potential signings who may be relatively unknown. If only we could get another Ted Phillips from Leiston!!!

I think it can mean something vastly different to what we've seen with Mick. Perhaps there is a need for players to have courage to continue playing football, even when we are playing against teams who are more experienced or have better quality. To make sure we continue making runs for each other, to pass forward instead of sideways, these things are linked to teammates being there for each other. We need players who can adapt and are willing to take on new ideas which maybe vastly different from what they have had before.

Could this explain the injection of youth rather than old pro's. And the suggestion from Hurst that any players who cannot handle the training will be out?
