Derby Latest Club to Target Waghorn
Monday, 9th Jul 2018 12:03
TWTD understands Derby County are now leading contenders in the chase for Blues striker Martyn Waghorn.
As revealed at the end of last month, Middlesbrough are keen to land the 28-year-old, while Nottingham Forest, who were previously linked, and Birmingham are also among several Championship clubs eyeing the former Sunderland, Leicester and Wigan frontman.
We understand the Rams, managed by Frank Lampard, who was among those interviewed for the Town boss’s job earlier in the summer, are now showing strong interest in Waghorn, who enjoyed a hugely successful first season with the Blues following last August’s £200,000 move from Rangers.
The South Shields-born striker, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2019 with the club having an option for a further season, was the Blues' top scorer with 16 goals and also picked up 11 assists. No one else in the Championship was directly involved in more goals.
Given that success, it would take a very significant fee to tempt Town to part with a player who quickly became a popular figure at the club.
Derby previously came close to signing Waghorn on loan from the Foxes in January 2011 and were linked with a permanent move the following summer.
Meanwhile, the Town squad fly back from their Spanish training camp today with the players being given tomorrow off before returning to Playford Road on Wednesday.
The Blues would appear likely to make a decision on whether to sign trialist Kane Vincent-Young later in the week.
Town may also receive a response from Blackpool regarding their £550,000 bid for central defender Curtis Tilt in the days to come.
We understand that there is substance to the weekend reports relating to that offer with the Tangerines believed to targeting £1 million for the 26-year-old former Wrexham centre-half.

Whoever we sign i would view the window as very poor if we cannot keep one of Bart or Waghorn

You cannot sell your best striker without a clear identifiable replacement. Do not see one being mentioned ?

He is the man who will spearhead our promotion charge.

We need to show ambition by keeping our best players, he is definitely one of them!!

We have transfer income of £4.5m , plus a fair chunk saved on wages from last season .
Surely we are in a position where we can resist this sort of interest . Waghorn was such a key player last year and will be a key man this year .
The position with Bart is slightly different - if a Premier team came in for him who could blame him for taking that opportunity , but surely we can offer more than the likes of Birmingham

What is the point of selling Waghorn? We won't get anywhere near a better player as a replacement. All this negative news is really depressing for the fans at the moment. Potentially selling our best two players from last season and not really bringing anyone in either. Please bring us some positive news! COYB!

IF true, what is the point of considering to sell our best players. We would never be able to get another striker for the price we paid Rangers.
Let's just hope it's hot air.

Waghorn hasn’t peaked yet. Realistic money talks these days in and out. 10m for Bart and Waghorn would seal it or they stay we bring in stronger additions, and we are decent promotion suspects

I can handle being a feeder club for Premier League teams with serious bucks to spend but I'm very uncomfortable with us seeming to decline into becoming a potential feeder club to teams (and not even those with parachute payments at their disposal) in the Championship, i.e. the likes of Bristol City, Birmingham and now Derby. When Marcus Evans initially took over I thought it would put us among the financial elite in this division, yet only a few years on and we're fast becoming financial minnows in this league.

All getting a bit worrying!!! I suppose now that everyone has been convinced to renew their season tickets the club feel that they can now stitch up the fans by selling our best players!! If we get 3/4 million for him and the manager gets to spend the cash plus Websters fee then it may work out but that would be the bare minimum of requirements in my opinion!!

Maybe just need to offer him better contract say to 2020 as can imagine he may have come on worse terms. He's proved his value and could be very important to us in future.

And if we're going to be prised of our best playing assets (should they want to move on) at least make sure we get top dollar for them!!! We've been guilty of selling a number of players on the cheap (with a few exceptions) for far too long now.

Waghorn must stay, a PROVEN striker in this league. Remember ME has readers on this site. Its worth showing our feelings as it feeds into his team.

I find it quite amusing how so many people here are getting their knickers in a twist of every story linking Bart Waghorn or Garner with a move away: when you look at it other than Forest, Their has been hardly any deals in the championship! just have patience if you think Hurst & Evans are not working on deals & just whistling to each other you don't no how football works: let's judge when the window is closed

We shouldn't sell to any other team in our league.

Need to give Hurts the confidence that he hasn’t joined a club where they could potentially sell their two best players, in Waghorn and Bialkowski! We MUST keep hold of them, unless fees come in that we can’t turn down. Anything over £9M for Waggy, and £6M for Bart would only be worth slightly thinking about - but then again, the fans would lose alot of trust in the board, which so far this season it has regained over previous years!!

Can we please not have a repeat of when we sold Murphy and replaced him with Leon Best...
|Juggsy added 12:54 - Jul 9|
Hasn't it already been stated that Evans will not be tempted into selling Waghorn? Much as this is worrying, at least save the histrionics until he gets sold!

Hampstead Blue, Promotion charge? More like he'd be the one to keep us up.
|guentchev added 13:30 - Jul 9|
Promotion charge? Highly unlikely I'm afraid....

Birmingham City again, another club that suddenly has money from nowhere it appears! How do they do it? Would be very disappointed to see Waghorn go, however £10m should be the opening offer for clubs interested. If not, just turn them away!!!
