Town Linked With Derry Defender Toal Monday, 23rd Sep 2019 19:31 Town are reported to be watching Derry City central defender Eoin Toal.
According to the Derry Journal, the Blues have sent representatives to watch the 20-year-old on several occasions and are considering making an offer at the end of the League of Ireland season, which finishes in just over a month.
The 20-year-old moved to the Brandywell from hometown club Armagh in May 2017 and since then has impressed for the Candy Stripes, who are managed by one-time Town youth goalkeeper Declan Devine.
Toal, who is contracted to Derry for another year, says he takes little notice of claims of interest in him.
“I’m happy that I have all the support from everyone at Derry City and, to be honest, I don’t listen to anything like that. I just take each game as it comes and see where I go from there,” the Northern Ireland U21 international told the Derry Journal.
“I’m just happy to be playing every week. Decky [Devine] has put his faith in me and I couldn’t be happier to be playing beside some top players like Ally [Gilchrist], Jamie [McDonagh], Darren Cole, Peter Cherrie and Ciaran Coll alongside me. But I’m just taking one game at a time and I’ll see where things go from there.”

For some reason we don't seem to have much success with Irish youngsters. Would be good if that would change. On the other hand, when we go Dutch.......

Tommy Smith - good shout. Saw him playing in the MLS last week on tv and he looks as good as ever, possibly even stronger.

Don't think we need another centre half not one who's past his best and turns like a double decker bus.

Why do we bother with these Irish players. Not one has come good in the last 50 years except Alan Hunter and he came via Blackburn.

@Bettyblue - are you meaning buying an Irish player direct from playing at an Irish club, or all Irish (including N Ireland?) players we've bought not coming good? If it's the first, then other than Owen Garvan & Bryan Hamilton, I'd agree, however, I'd argue against the latter with the following : Jim Magilton. Gareth McAuley. Daryll Murphy Damien Delaney Alan Lee Alan Judge I'm sure there are more but I'll not go on. Besides, about time our luck changed.

I think what people are fed up with is our habit of taking on youngsters (not just Irish) and then rarely giving them a chance, letting them waste in the U23s for a couple of years & then letting them go. Statistically, most of them won't make it, but we also ditched Conor Hourihane, for example.

I think agents in Ireland just like to link players with us as we did take a few during the McCarthy era, so it sounds plausible and drums up interest. Do we actually have a scout out there any more?

@JewellintheTown how have you forgotten the magical Matt Holland?
TimmyH added 10:33 - Sep 24
haha!...a few on here wanting Smith back, I was one on here saying not to let him go (against the throng of people saying he wasn't good enough at the time 2017/18). Steer clear of the young Irish lads from their leagues, never got anywhere with them - just ask McCarthy that.

@IpswichToon - Ah, I see why you said that. Easy to see why you mentioned him as there are a bunch of players that play/played for Ireland or NI, including Matt, that as far as I know, weren't born or raised in Ireland. Matt, I believe, was born in Bury, England, never played for an Irish club and speaks with a very English accent. Must have an eligible relative with Irish lineage for him to have played for them.
