Newcastle and Arsenal Linked With Blues Duo
Saturday, 18th Apr 2020 13:29

Town duo Flynn Downes and Luke Woolfenden are reportedly being eyed by Newcastle United, while Arsenal are claimed to have been keeping tabs on Downes.

According to the Newcastle Chronicle, the Magpies, whose takeover is now at an advanced stage, are keen on three young players, Downes, Woolfenden and Aaron Hickey, a 17-year-old defender with Hearts.

Woolfenden and Downes are both well-known to Newcastle U23s boss Chris Hogg, who joined the Premier League club from the same job with the Blues in February, and the pair were reportedly watched by the North-East club prior to football’s suspension and their scouting staff being put on furlough.

Arsenal are also said to have taken a look at midfielder Downes, with the Blues claimed to have been quoting a potential fee of £7 million for the England U20 international. However, it’s reported that Newcastle may hope to land their targets for lower fees given the financial impact of the coronavirus on EFL clubs.

In January, manager Paul Lambert put a value of £10 million on central defender or right-back Woolfenden.

As per previous reports, Downes, 21, is also interesting West Ham and Fulham, while Leeds United, Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and QPR are keen on Woolfenden, also 21.

Both players are contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2022 with the club having an option for a further season.

When both to go then hopefully a few clubs will be interested in each player which will create some sort of bidding war.

Just to see the line ‘ However, it's reported that Newcastle may hope to land their targets for lower fees given the financial impact of the coronavirus on EFL clubs‘ is just another rain I'm falling out of love with the game. At a time like this the rich get richer and the poor just don't seem to matter.

I appreciate it is business but still find it sickening.

Newcastle are set to have deep deep pockets.

That puts an additional 50% on top of the original asking price for both.

Remember Mings well he went from us for 8 million to Bournemouth, we thought that was reasonable then they then sold him for 25 million to Villa, now Villa are asking 40 million ??
where does it end ???

I think I'd rather do business with Mike Ashley than the House of Saud!

There is no doubt in my mind Evans will sell. Evans businesses must be taking a real hit at the moment and he will be looking to realise any way of bringing in cash.

Don't expect the fees received to be invested back in the club either. It probably wouldn't have happened before coronavius and sure as hell won't happen now!

I don't blame either if they want to go, but you know they'll just be loaned out to championship sides. The pathway to the first team is very congested these days. Would they be better off staying another year and getting 50 more games?

Money talks . They'll be off, and won't give this Club a second backward glance .

I think a move to Arsenal for the Woolf would be great for both parties (him and them!) He's a future Tony Adams in the making and will play for England (a lot)! Best young player I've seen at the club since Kieron Dyer. Which reminds me to say ‘thank you' to Kieron for getting everyone to do their ‘best XI'. Absolutely loving it and bringing back some amazing memories at a time when things are so worrying for everyone (and we are also having to contend with this virus!)

I think Downes will end up at a London Club . Wouldn't surprise me if it's WHU ( think he supports them doesn't he ?) snd to my knowledge he lives in Essex so a capital Club would seem likely .

These links are absolutely hilarious. Surely to God even the most deluded Ipswich fan realises that they're nowhere near good enough. They've looked ordinary at league1 level. Downes to Arsenal will have me wetting myself for weeks to come. Can you imagine what their fans would think when they saw him?!!

If the fees are good ie: learning from our previous giveaways! Then I'm sure we will get over it quick

It's going to be a buyer's market after Covid 19, and we'll get peanuts for them now.

Do you know what, I'm starting to not give a damn about football. Been supporting Ipswich since the 60's but the greed in football has reached an all time high when the country is being brought to it's knees by corona virus. Whats more important, who should be paid more and idolised more, people who save lives and we depend on, or footballers that don't give a sh*t about anything other than themselves?

The money for players these days is so ridiculous, it makes perfect sense for PL clubs to trawl the lower leagues, take a gamble for the chump change that is single digit millions and loan them out.

As things stand, there is just no way forward for Town; we're in a far, far weaker position than we were in the Championship with the endless cherry-picking of our best players and without the money to bring in anyone better.

When you add mid-table League 1 to the equation, we're stuffed.

And, as has been pointed out, the Marcus Evans empire could well be in very serious difficulty - along with everyone else. I can't say if he's likely to go bust - although that risk has rocketed - but I can say that things are going to get a lot worse and may never get better.
