Town Linked With Oxford Midfielder and Face Keeper Frustration
Sunday, 30th May 2021 10:13

Town are reportedly eyeing Oxford United central midfielder Mark Sykes, while their interest in Dundee United keeper Benjamin Siegrist is said to be facing frustration.

According to The Sun on Sunday, the Blues are interested in signing the 23-year-old Northern Irishman this summer.

Belfast-born Sykes joined Oxford from Glenavon in 2019 in January 2019 and since then has made 66 starts and 26 sub appearances, scoring three times, helping the U's into the League One play-offs in both seasons.

The report claims the Belfast-born schemer is out of contract this summer, however, Oxford triggered a one-year option on his deal at the end of April.

Having been capped 11 times at U21 level by Northern Ireland, scoring twice, Sykes has since switched his international allegiance to the Republic of Ireland but is yet to win a cap although is on standby for their June friendlies against Andorra and Hungary.

Meanwhile, the Blues reported interest in Siegrist is, also according to The Sun on Sunday, being frustrated by the 29-year-old waiting to see whether Celtic firm up their interest.

Siegrist, who is out of contract this summer, has been linked with Celtic, who are currently managerless, since January.

If he is really holding out for Mickey mouse football fine move on, but as I suspect most of the stories knocking around at the moment are exactly that, move on nothing to see here........again

I instinctively don't believe a thing The S*n says.

However, if we're actually competing with Celtic for Siegrist then I think we need to move on to a different target. Any player would choose Celtic given the choice between them and Ipswich.

Are we really in need of a new keeper?!! I would think that improving every other position on the pitch would be of greater priority !

We definitely need a number one. The spine of the team is key to success. Bart saved the team so many points in a season where as average keepers which is what we have cost the team points. Upgrade needed 100

Would take Sykes in a heart beat. Solid central midfielder is something we need desperately as is a goalkeeper. A good keeper is worth 10 points a season, whereas ours cost us double that last season. There will be many more linked, so guess we will just have to hope that some quality players will actually arrive.

I think we are being used this summer to firm up better contracts for players at other clubs by their agents. Throw Ipswich into the ring, knowing we have a bit of money, then the said player seems to get a better contract, or finds a better club. Having money may not be such a great thing after all ?

I thought Cornelly did OK towards the end of the season a good goal keeping coach would get the best out of our keepers

I understand what people are saying. But whilst Bart may have saved us 10pts with his shot stopping ability, he probably cost us double that by dropping corners and crosses or being rooted to his line. Also, if we made it slightly more difficult for the opponents to waltz through our midfield or get crosses in from out wide without being challenged our keeper would be less worked. Whoever's in goal needs a lot more protection than what they got this last season. It's only down to the opponents inability to shoot straight at this level that kept us from fighting a relegation battle last season.First and foremost I want a left back, right back, 2 central defenders, 1combative and 1 creative midfielder and at least 1 striker. And if there's anything left over from the 13billion I'll have a keeper as well.

Anyone who is 'holding out for a move to another club', assuming this to be true, will not be committed to Ipswich. Forget him. Ipswich must not be seen as a stepping stone to progression elsewhere. You either commit to the club or you do not.

Fully agree Marinersnose. We need a solid number 1, number 5 and number 9 plus a couple of experienced wingers.
For a goal keeper how about Kieron Westwood just released by Sheffield Wednesday?

Agreed fifeblue. And therein lies the danger of telling every player to find another club. We lose any committed players we had yet Demand the same from any incoming player. Doesn't work very often. Think Norris, MacAuley, Leadbitter, etc.. Arguably that's where our problems started when Evans took over.

Our league one is about the same level as the Scottish premiership. So why wait for Celtic to move first?

If the keeper doesn't want to come here on the deals own merits then sod him!

We need people committed to the cause!

Not impressed with Cornell but think Holy is plenty good enough. Also are we really after a midfielder who's scored 3 goals in 90odd appearances? Defence and that part of midfield isn't the priority. We probably need three players given what's left although it seems Cook wants rid of everyone bar KVY, Norwood and edwards.

It's just occurred to me if he doesn't want to play any of the playing staff as they are all up for sale he needs 20 new players!

Dissboyitfc added 16:00 - May 30
i think Cook has said to the players they are for sale to get a reaction, Dobra has come out and said he wants to stay and fight for his future, Cook wants to hear that from others i suspect! not sure if i agree with Cook on this, man management is a skill, using a blanket technique wont motivate all of them.

Why Mark me down about Cornell? End of the season quite a few on here said he'd had a few good games. Hence why I said maybe a decent goalkeeping coach can get his confidence back and maybe a good backup keeper. Looking at Bart when he moved on pretty rubbish some couldn't wait for Millwall to take him. Now his the messiah hence why Millwall not renewing his contract. Goalkeeper of good quality are hard to get hold of as they don't tend to leave clubs very often. Salary cap will mean league 1 or 2 at best so you think we going to get any better than we have?
