Lankester Set For Cambridge as Clubs Agree Deal
Thursday, 24th Jun 2021 16:12

TWTD understands a deal has been agreed which will see midfielder Jack Lankester join Cambridge United on a permanent basis, subject to a medical.

We expect the 21-year-old's switch to the Abbey Stadium will be confirmed in the next few days.

Bury St Edmunds-born Lankester came through the academy at Town and went on to make 13 starts and 17 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring three goals.

Lankester made his senior debut in the 2018/19 campaign but stressed fractures to his back hampered his progress and he missed the whole of the 2019/20 season.

He returned in 2020/21 but was unable to nail down a regular spot in the side and was among the players told he could find another club at the end of the season.

The U's, who were promoted to League One last season, have also shown interest in fellow midfielder Teddy Bishop with the MK Dons also very keen.

Elsewhere, former Blues loanee Callum Connolly has joined Championship new boys Blackpool on a two-year deal having left Everton at the end of last season.

Admittedly I've only seen a bit of him, but when I did thought he was a decent prospect.

Really sorry to see Jack go. I don't consider him to be part of the failure for last season for the most part. Time will tell if we regret this. It would be nice to keep some of the youngsters for the future.

I guess we have a manager without rose tinted spectacles so as much as I wanted Jack to be a success here probably the best for everyone he makes a fresh start.

Sad to see our youth being dismantled but hopefully we crack onto the next level once we get our squad sorted.

Short sighted of town to let him go. Cook needed to clear some dead wood out but is he really dead wood? I don't think he's been given enough of a chance. Paul Cook better get us promoted if he's getting rid of the good young players as well as those not up to standard. I hope he does

Good luck Jack, unfortunate that your time at ITFC was in the ''Dark age'' .

Perhaps it would be cheaper if Paul Cook looked for a fresh start somewhere else, probably in League 2.

Makes me laugh that fans seem to be upset now when players like Lancaster leave. This club needed a clear out and we are getting a proper one. These players had a chance and failed.

I trust Ashton has included a meaty sell on clause just in case. but he was never robust enough for the way Cook wants to play . Good luck to the lad and I do feel a fresh start is needed.

Some players had ample chance and failed, a 21 year old jack Lancaster is not in that category

Think he'll do well if he can stay fit but have to see this as a sign of intent in terms of the team we are seeking to build.

It's a chance for him to kick start his career too which I think is fair.

Hope there is a decent sell on clause though

Eddie1985, would you say it was short sighted of town to let him go?

All the best Jack. Sorry to see him go as there is potential there and given the chance I think he could have done very well for us.

All the best Jack we didnt see the best of you due to injury. Good luck.

On another note it seems Gibbs could be the next youngster out the door as I've been informed he hasnt reported to pre season training so that he doesnt pick up an injury.

Would love our club to keep hold of some of our better youngsters.

We are letting a lot of players leave but haven't replaced them yet, feel of unease until new players are bought in, Harper etc, it's a bit quiet all of a sudden.

One thing i do find frustrating is people moaning about Cook selling our 'promising youngsters'

If he was that promising then with all due respect to Cambridge i'm sure he would be looking at a move to the Championship at the very least.

we thought we had the best squad in League 1 but other than Andre Dozzell where have our 'stars' ended up ? Plymouth, Colchester and Cambridge

Wake up guys the players we have / had here are not as good as they and some us thought they were ... this reset needs to be done - just have faith in the new regime

Lee Evans and Wesley Burns are an undoubted improvement on what we had ... a few more through the door along with the 4 or 5 being kept on and we will be in business

Eddie1985.
He played 17 times last season and I forgot he was on the pitch most games. Just because you're from our academy doesn't mean you deserve to plod along and earn a wage based on potential. Been issue with the plodders in our fan base, they have no bite to them!

"these players had their chance" - I think this is a valid statement for players at or above their peak. Eg was clear Judge wasn't good enough and wasn't going to improve at 31, should have got shot sooner. Lankester is relatively young, low-wage, and was among our brighter prospects. Only given a few starts last season and had a decent goal-involvement to game ratio. Why not Loan Lankester out if you think he's not quite ready? I worry the "we're too lightweight" sentiment on here is leading us back to landfill, journeymen proper-blokes in midfield like under MM. If they bludgeon their way out of L1 next season, they won't be good enough to succeed in the Championship as we've seen.

Always ask yourself: what would Sir Bobby Robson do? Grow our own!
