Lankester Set For Cambridge as Clubs Agree Deal
Thursday, 24th Jun 2021 16:12

TWTD understands a deal has been agreed which will see midfielder Jack Lankester join Cambridge United on a permanent basis, subject to a medical.

We expect the 21-year-old's switch to the Abbey Stadium will be confirmed in the next few days.

Bury St Edmunds-born Lankester came through the academy at Town and went on to make 13 starts and 17 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring three goals.

Lankester made his senior debut in the 2018/19 campaign but stressed fractures to his back hampered his progress and he missed the whole of the 2019/20 season.

He returned in 2020/21 but was unable to nail down a regular spot in the side and was among the players told he could find another club at the end of the season.

The U's, who were promoted to League One last season, have also shown interest in fellow midfielder Teddy Bishop with the MK Dons also very keen.

Elsewhere, former Blues loanee Callum Connolly has joined Championship new boys Blackpool on a two-year deal having left Everton at the end of last season.

Agree, Grow our Own. It makes little sense to ditch players with so much potential, and/or future financial clout.

Meh.

A mixed bag of opinions on this potential transfer. I was a little disappointed initially to see that the deals nearly done - but when you sit back and weigh it up - I'm going to stick with the plan and start to judge Cook around Xmas time.

I agree with those who are predicting a whole repeat of the H*rust era again, but also see the ‘let's wait and see' crowd, and have to agree to go with them, rather than panic before a balls been kicked. I think it's only natural that we're all a bit disappointed that one of our own ‘promising' youth players is on the way out following just days after Dozzell - but I agree with the Dozzell decision, so will back this too. Dozzell - as much as we wanted him to be impactful, was more often than not lazy, and lacked positional awareness,

Alan Lee referred to Lankester as a bit of a handful - and a bit of a loose cannon. Perhaps he's not harnessed this side of his character as yet - and Cook has been on the end of his attitude - enough to know he's not in the correct headspace for what Cook wants. It's easy for us as fans to judge a player purely on the pitch for 90 odd minutes each week - but I've worked with some nuclear sized knob bets who can turn on the charm for an hour in the working week. Still doesn't convince me for the other 38.5 hours I'm in their company…!

I'll continue to trust that Cook is implementing a master plan rather than a H*rst plan for now. With the fixtures out today - presuming we get some back up in between now and kick off - we've got the chance to start with a good 6 or so games against what should be predominantly wins in all 6.

It looks worrying at the mo - but I think it's because we're so used to the Ipswich way - which is history now. We need to back the revolution and give it a chance…

All or nothing. Actually all or worse than nothing.

As proved over the last few seasons - a big squad doesn't me anything if it's full of average players. Let's rejoice in a smaller squad with quality players picked by Paul Cook this coming season.

You need a mixture of young and experienced. Are we sure? Aren't we just strengthening opposition?

Monkeyblue and Betty. Perhaps its time for you both to move on as well as all this negativity is really bad for your health. Then again misery and losing might be your whole life experience so thats why you cannot be positive. Sad really.

Good move for him, to be joining a club that is just as local for him as Town was, and to be joining a squad that is presumably happy after a promotion season and which has confidence in its management team.

not only can cook not work with anyone he hasn't signed he's admitting he's unable or unwilling to develop any younger players.

so good luck to the academy in signing any new players.

who is going to sign for a club with no players?

Shame this one in my opinion, but the reality is he signed a second lucrative deal before relegation and his lack of availability through injuries means that the gamble the club took hasn't paid off. With you well Lanks, glad you'll only be down the road fella.

I have been a fan of our young player development programme and enjoy watching the progress of our young players.

Unfortunately though I think too much emphasis has been made on aiming to get a certain percentage of home grown players into the first team . I think there is a certain amount of truth that you will not win anything with youngsters. Our previously bloated squad had; to many players who were not robust enough to avoid regular visits to the treatment room; too many young players with promise but inconsistent to become first choice; older players past their best; and not enough players around the 25/26 with enough experience, talent and fitness to be heavily relied on.

To be at the top of your sport you are only as good as your last game and if you have an off day, you have to come back strongly next time around to succeed.

Ipswich Town has to get out of Division 1 and as much as you might like to blame the previous managers, the recruitment and mix of players has been poor. This is what is going to be tried to be addressed with the new management.

Whilst I wouldn't want to throw the Alan Lee comment around at Jack, as that was a while ago and the lad may well have taken that on board and learned. However, Jack for me is not close to say a Darren Ambrose more akin to a Josh Carson. Look what happened to Josh when he moved on!!!

I of course wish Jack all the best and hope he goes on to be a fabulous player which would be great advert for Ipswich academy but he is what Cook sees him as at this present moment an under 23 player who has failed to make an impact at League 1 level.

The academy success shouldn't be judged on the number of potential first team players you produce but the quality and the right players at the right time. Pretty much every club is trying to produce home grown talent and look at some of those discarded from the elite academies of the premiership failing to make an impact in the lower leagues.

I think too much emphasis is placed on the “academy” process. Almost suggesting to young players they are part of an elite at the outset. A player development model needs to be looked at taking a mix of what clubs like Peterborough and Brentford have done. I am far from suggesting the academy be scrapped or significantly scaled down but I think we need a healthy mix to our approach of breaking the mold of thinking we can completely grow our own. I don't think our academy has been unsuccessful but we do need to be developing players with the ability to stamp their authority on a first team place by the time they reach 20/21 otherwise they just take up a squad place congesting the pathway of the next crop of promising young players.

I like young Liam Gibbs but by not signing a contract he appears to be holding out for a better contract at the risk of his career falling into oblivion at some premiership outfit as being just one of 30 or so exceptionally talented youngsters.

Cook is trying to build the right mentality and if 18 year olds are playing us off as if they were senior pros then it is time for them to move on as well, now of course we should hold out for compensation but a young player doesn't become an established first team player in my mind until he has made 40 or 50 starts.

Yes the game is all wrong I'm many senses, but the pandemic has created an opportunity to start to bring some more reality back to our game.

I see a lot of people here still think all our players are dying to stay in Ipswich and Paul Cook and the new regime are kicking them out. Never stop to think some of the players want out despite the PC and CEO wanting to keep them? At least we now seem to have a confident management in place that will not allow players going for peanuts.

itfcserbia, if that was the case then Cook wouldn't have placed nearly all of them in the U23s squad when the first team squad is bare...

You can argue the case for and against Cook all day long, but the facts are most of the squad seemed unable to put the required amount of effort on the training ground or on match days to warrant putting on the blue shirt of Ipswich. The cosy little club image at Ipswich has been going on for years now and has been backed up by Alan Lee and Paul Lambert also stated the club is rotten to the core. Remember under the Hurst, Doig rugeme the players rebelled against the hard training sessions put down by Doig. Fans get very attached to their favourite players even if they are mediocre they don't like to seem them leave. The problem is the damage is so deep rooted it's going to take time to put right.

Personally we all need to remember that not one player really stood out for us last season.
If players were good enough they would have stayed and shown Cook why they want to stay.
I dont know what goes on behind closed doors at the club, but if players are happy in themselves to move on, then to me it shows the ambition isnt there to play for the shirt or they need a fresh start.
Yes, not nice to see the young lads being moved on, but you have to say also that did they stand out and change games when introduced. from Cooks view last season, thats a no.
When players like Dyer and Bramble were coming through you knew they were good and if you compare some of the youngsters to those guys, they aren't anywhere near that.
Judge Cook at Christmas time and the approach we are taking, but I personally think these changes are very much needed to get back up in to the Championship and beyond.

Linkboy13 - not sure if history is being re-written here, but the players rebelled against Doig for the vicious and personal abuse he dished out - not the training. Just ask Bart - it is eye opening.

Never heard that the training under Doig and Hurst was intense. No-one seems to have a good word to say about those two, especially Alan Lee.
