Blues Among Clubs Linked With Dundee United Striker Shankland
Wednesday, 4th Aug 2021 13:40

Town are among a number of clubs being linked with Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland.

According to the Daily Mail, Belgian side Beerschot have offered £500,000 for the 25-year-old but with the Blues in competition.

The MK Dons are also said to have shown interest, while Championship sides are also keen.

Glasgow-born Shankland, who is contracted to the Terrors for another year, is said to find the idea of playing abroad appealing.

The three-times-capped Scotland international started his career with Queen’s Park before moving on to Aberdeen, during which time he spent spells on loan at Dunfermline, St Mirren and Greenock Morton.

He joined Ayr United in 2017 before signing for Dundee United in the summer of 2019.

Since moving to Tannadice Shankland has scored 40 goals - including three already this season - in 70 starts and four sub appearances.

Having added Joe Pigott and Macauley Bonne to the squad alongside James Norwood this summer, and with Kayden Jackson seemingly back in the fold, it would be a surprise if Town moved for another central striker.

Unless Jackson is used as part of the deal?

Unless Jackson ups his game, I can't see him playing in the league so will probably be used in the Papa John's and Carabao Cup competitions. I don't see another striker as a priority unless he's a proven goal scorer at this level or above which this guy isn't

We need another. Jackson horrendous, Norwood hit and miss and from what I've seen so far, Bonne isn't much better!

Nobody wants Jackson...

i cant see shankland playing league one football but even if we already have stacked options up top, this is the kind of player you sign when available regardless.

id be over the moon to secure him!

Reuserscurtains. You for real? Yes. Jackson u may be right on. Norwood hasnt played when fit yet so really cant be truly judged. But you dont go from scoring 42 goals in a season to being rubbish. So let's see what hes like now he appears to be fit. And how can u judge Bonne? Based on what? About an 80 minutes of football in.preseason. Doesnt mean I think we dont need another striker possibly but not the biggest priority really.

I think Jackson should be moved on as he's not good enough. We definitely need a another striker if we are to be serious contenders. Norwood will do a job if he stays fit and Bonne looks busy. Goals win games and this is an area that we have previously struggled. Millwall was an example of our lack of goals. Competition is good for the team. This lad has good numbers

I think the difference between being linked and actually signing a player is now significant even though we are a league one team. Our management is selling our club to players, agents and most everyone that we are going upwards and no longer the laughingstock of this division. Any potential player can see the benefits we are offering so I am not surprised that some players are prepared to drop down to our level. The future is exciting. Our owners and management are exceptional. COYB

Never seen him play but 74 goals in 115 games over the last three years across all competitions including scoring for Scotland - I'd be interested.

Blues1 - yes I am for real. You just agreed with me on Jackson, and by hit and miss I mean Norwood is rarely fit and all of those 42 goals were in lower leagues - on norwoods day he's a good option from the bench but if he's inured then what? Also Bonne's goal record above the conference doesn't fill me with much hope. Saying we need another striker isn't unrealistic if you want to be the best!

cant see the need for another striker at the club personally, already got 3 strikers that are more than good enough for league one. Unless jackson is going to be used as part of the deal to provide competition for the other 3. But surely there are bigger positional priorities like the centre of defence just 3 days away from the start of the season? However in cook we trust

If he's signs he is a genius if he doesn't he wasn't good enough and we didn't want him is my prediction. Personally know sod all about him like most of you so can only look at his record and say he could be useless or as good as the two strikers we've signed. The ones who've been banging them in this preseason.

Thought of highly in Scotland.
But 2 + 2 for me this link.
Don't see it.

Would be a real coup if this came off. Jackson ain't good enough for the lone striker role, Norwood is yet to prove his fitness, and Bonne can play in one of the three AM roles.

Does Suffolk count as abroad?
If so we're in

Beerschot in Belgium. Now there's an appealing thought.

We need another CB more importantly as well as other positions

I think it's harsh to judge any striker who's been at this club over the past three seasons for not scoring goals when they've had next to no service. Let's hope an enhanced midfield and attacking style of play delivers the sort of deliveries into the box that will allow Norwood to show exactly what he can do (and let's not forget he's still managed to get into double figures both seasons despite this as well as being consistently crocked for half the time). Maybe Jackson might even prove to be better than he's ever shown if these bombing full backs we're building towards start slamming the ball over...

Not sure Bonne is an out and out striker, whilst Pigott can play behind a lone striker. Norwood is injury prone, and I'm not convinced Jackson wants to stay.

Some were surprised Shankland didn't make the cut for the Scotland Euros squad, certainly a different proposition to Dykes or Christie. If we landed him we would have a striker who could develop to Championship class at least and maybe beyond. Hope it happens, much more than the Siegrist rumours.

Monkeyblue maybe people on here know more than you? Look at the scoring ratio if that's not better than Jackson's I don't know what so we'll worth a punt.

Knowing both Dundee & Ipswich, I'd say Ipswich is very much "abroad" if he wants to move abroad.

Ipswich counts as abroad when compared to Dundee, surely?

Maybe swap deal with Norwood in his last year of contract. Dundee United wanted him on loan last year, that was probably due to Micky Mellon his old manager being there, but Micky departed during the summer. Might be a good move for James to play in the Scottish Premiership
