Bonne Named in Zimbabwe Squad
Thursday, 4th Nov 2021 11:50

Blues top scorer Macauley Bonne has been named in the Zimbabwe squad for their World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Ethiopia this month and looks set to miss Town's next League One match.

The Warriors face the South Africans in Johannesburg on Thursday 11th November with the Ethiopians visiting Harare three days later.

On-loan striker Bonne is the first Town player to be called up ahead of the international weekend which covers the Papa John’s Trophy tie against the frontman's former club Colchester next Tuesday and the League One match at home to Oxford on Saturday 13th November.

Town can postpone the Oxford game if they have three call-ups, while the U's could do the same if they have three players named in squads. However, neither side has had three players called up during previous international weeks this season, although both have had games postponed due to opposition calls. Oxford have had Gavin Whyte called up by Northern Ireland and the winger will miss the Ipswich match.

The Blues are also likely to find themselves without Bersant Celina with the Kosovan international having been with their squad in the last break and almost certain to get the nod again this time around.

Skipper Sam Morsy could be named in Egypt’s squad for their qualifiers - in which case Town could postpone the Oxford match - having been included in their provisional squad for October’s internationals before being omitted from the final party.

Idris El Mizouni has previously won one full cap and played two games at U23 level with Tunisia but hasn't been called up since 2019.

I'm just here to mention there's a football team called Chicken Inn.

Zimbabwe have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations so be prepared to lose Bonne for 6 weeks at the beginning of 2022. Tournament is from 9th January to 6th February but he will have to be released before then.

Not good news but not a disaster either. We have goals throughout the team and off the bench so I'm not expecting them to dry up without our ‘best' striker on the pitch.

It's a tough call to go on international duty, because it might be difficult to get back into the team again. I'm not keen on having too many African internationals. The Africa cup of nations should be only every four years.

With these international calls ups and a possible loan recalls in January by QPR, we will need to get Joe Pigott involved more. The cup games are a good opportunity to give him some minutes ahead of Oxford.

Yikes id completely forgotten about international potential impact and especially Nations Cup. If we have three away the Oxford game will shift but that's a shame as our momentum is so good.
On the upside we have Pigott fit and we only play one up top and with Chaplin and Fraser we have options in the ten role. Honestly the one I would be most afraid of losing is Morsy, he is becoming our heartbeat.

Hopefully QPR will not have already recalled him by then!

Bonne will sign for us so this will be a regular consideration if he keeps his form. No brainer for him being sold to us considering his history and how much he's enjoying it here and loves the club, team, fans.
Players have a way to get themselves sold even under contract even if managers want to keep them, as we've seen with our own ex-players like Waghorn.
QPR aren't missing him & on current form we'll pay whatever to keep him even if he's not officially put up for transfer but playing us off with other offers might raise his asking price. Our current off-field team wont let us down in getting him with his proven record. Will just have to see what winter/ summer transfer market brings.

JewellintheTown, yes spot on. I understand QPR recalled another striker from loan last week as cover, that seems a clear indicator that the deal is done with us. I suspect there will be a mixture of cash plus possibly foregoing some of the Dozzell add-ons, we will probably never know but what we do know is that Mr Ashton gets things done.

If I'm being completely selfish about this I would like to see someone else called up and the match postponed because I will be in San Marino for the England game that weekend

However, momentum is a great thing and we certainly have that right now

Bad news losing Bonne, but a great opportunity for Pigott to make his mark.

The way Ashton works it would be a major surprise if he's not already sorted something, a little bird said it was all agreed day one

as much as we need Bonne, if he is to miss games we do have other players capable of scoring, which is some consolation, Piggot is waiting in the wings and has yet to prove himself. As for Norwood and Jackson ,i think they will be gone January ,they have had their chances and we have moved on .

Optimistically speaking, if Macca does get called up for the AfricaCup Of Nations, it might make QPR less likely to recall him.

Very frustrating for us but good luck to him. Any League 1 goalkeepers reading this news will feel that they can be a bit more relaxed around their goalmouths with him not there.
At least we have some options who can score, Piggot should be fine and Chaplin could play there also with Norwood waiting in the wings as it were. Great that we also have other midfield goal scorers these days.
